New Year - New Thread!!

Hope you all had a lovely festive season!

I went for a nice walk in the park today as it was lovely & sunny. Sneezed violently half way round and realised my pelvic floor integrity ain't what it used to be. Which got me thinking about New Years resolutions!

  1. DO MORE PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES!!!
  2. Get Toned and Fit
  3. Get pregnant
  4. Sort out the garden

Obviousy number 3 may have an impact on 1 and 2!!

OP posts:

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 10:13

ps meant to add to the first bit - I am still thinking of you Angeliz and will be especially thinking of you on Thurs.

gossifer · 10/01/2006 10:16

hazellnut, i think the strength and stablility of you baby is much more important then the weight, eg what if dd was 22lb but still couldn't sit? would you put her in a forward facing carseat? they have to lay down some guidelines, but, as we know, they're all sooooo different
sounds like dd is ready to face the world!!!

SnowmAngeliz · 10/01/2006 10:19

Is that 9 kilograms then? (20lb's) as that's what we had to go for.
DD was JUST 9 kilo's when we moved her into her forward facing one, she can't stand but can sit unaided for ages and has good neck control so we put her in it as soon as she hit 9 kilos.
She is much happier in there.

Do your research on car seats as Misdee and i are having a chat on another thread about us both buying car seats which are recomended NOT to buy on the Which report!!

We are getting her a new one this weekend. (dd1 that is)

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 10:20

that's the conclusion we'd reach Goss but my brother was told by a HV to wait till their dd was 20 lbs as they were only tested at this weight so his poor dd was 15 months and walking v.v.v. well before she sat forward. To my mind though the argument about them being tested at 20 lbs is just so they have come back if something were to happen... but perhaps I'm just a cynic .

Funnily enough, we had a quick look at the weekend and bumped into a friend who was looking at the same car seat for her ds who is only 6 months but 21 lbs.....

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 10:21

I just spotted that thread Angeliz - we were thinking of the maxi cosi priori xp (mainly because dh wants a black one to match the car seats - sad eh ?!) which i think is ok - not the best best but still quite high ?!

gossifer · 10/01/2006 10:27

oh, it's so hard isn't it? conflicting advice and desicions to make about everything, and then when you've made your mind up, it has to be colour co-ordinated as well

fruitful · 10/01/2006 11:18

Hazellnut - there are a couple of next-stage carseats that can be fitted rear-facing as well as forward-facing. One by Britax and the Bebe Confort Iseos, which we have. Dd went in that rear-facing at 12mo when she was too big for the infant seat, but still had ages to go before reaching 20lbs. She liked being higher up and could see out of the window. Then we turned it round when she was bigger. Although, you'd definitely need to check it fits - it doesn't fit so well rear-facing in our current car. Luckily ds is heavier and didn't need it!

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 13:28

thanks fruitful - thats useful info (even if it does give us MORE choice ). DH has approved the colours of the m&p one so we will go and look at it this weekend as we need to go further afield so no at a lose end this afternoon - harumph !! Oh well dd asleep after swimming so can sit on here for a bit !

roosmum · 10/01/2006 13:38

hello car sear querying mums!

a quick snatched post from me - i'm in the library, having re-started my phd work - ssssshhh, it's going surprisingly well just now....i'm a bit stunned, thought my brains had mushed up completely over last 12 months!
PIL are here for a few days, so roo is taken care of whilst roosdad & FIL sort some long-planned DIY stuff at home. new tiles in kitchen & dining room. new funky sink thing (which we bought before roo was born!!). am totally over-excited abt 'getting stuff DONE' in the house. still loads to do tho....including possibly new central heating & def new shower/cubicle.

haven't much to add on car seats. roo has the recaro young expert, which is big & comfy - & hopefully safe. it's not isofix but recaro have a good name for safety & it seems the comfiest seat by far that we looked at - bebeconfort seat also good in this respect. wanted isofix...but recaro plush seat won out.

tipex - how's sleep? roo is random atm, slept ok last night, horifically night before...???

angeliz - how are you feeling? just hope all's ok for you!

to all, now have to scurry back to desk & huuuuge pile of books (getting bigger all the time, scaring me!).

pjsmum · 10/01/2006 17:51

Hello all
Car seat query- we have the britax isofix, dd seems quite happy in it. I looked at the M&P one and Maxi cosi too.
Crikey this going to back to work is hard. DD still wont sleep at nursery so is so tired when i get her. Seems i only see her now when she is really grisly and miserable Its meant that her whole sleep pattern has gone to pot, she woke up at 4.20 am today! She has also taken to biting other children at nursery too. I know its probably just a phase but stll feel really bad and guilty about it.
Might buy the book What mothers do, sounds like a good read, if i can stay awake long enough to read it that is!!

OOh Tipex luxky you with the sleep, my 2 have been spoilt rotten over Christmas i'm afarind and even dd1's sleep is shot to peices. She wants to sleep in my room with Amelia! She is getting tired from School though so she's gone off in her bed properly tonight.

I am getting really nervous about Thursday TBH. When i think about it i get palpitations. I had convinced myself last time i think that it would be negative, then they saw the sac and yolk sac. Now i feel that even subconciously my mind is telling me it'll be alright now and then i think God i am so unprepared if it's bad news!!

There was a thread i read earlier about ectopic pregnancy, (i didn't post as the lady in question had a misscarraige) but a few were saying, not know for weeks is the worst thing!

It's at 10 on Thursday morning.
At least my mam has backed off with pestering me to tell my sisters!

picnikel · 10/01/2006 20:29

Hi all,
Not been on much due to bloody viruses etc - so much to catch up on! Dd is much better so of course now I've got a cold and DH has been ill since Xmas (and doing his brave little soldier impression - men!!)

Car Seats - we're going to get the maxi cosi priori xp too, we don't have isofix and DH reckoned it had good reviews for safety. Dd is looking increasingly squished in her baby car seat, it's odd thinking back to when she was newborn and looked totally swamped in it!

Books - haven't bought any yet but "What mothers do" sounds good. SIL gave me her copy of Toddler Taming. Let us know what you think of any books it's great to get some recommendations.

MMR - I think I'd have been nervous about it if this was a few years ago when all the fuss went on. I think since then there has been so much work done looking at it that it must be the best researched immunisation ever. I honestly can say having read a lot of literature about it that I believe it's safe - the original Wakefield stuff was bad science and nothing has ever backed up his claims. It's such a contentious thing, though and I'd totally respect anyone's decisions about immunisations because at the end of the day you are giving them to fit & healthy kids for the good of the population as a whole not for them as individuals - which is fine if you're a public health physician but maybe not so fine if it's your own precious baby. I was more uptight about the jabs at 6 weeks becuase 6 immunisations in one go seems a lot for such a young baby. It's hard to be objective about my own baby but have done a fair bit of paediatrics and seen some very sick children - I'd do anything to reduce the chances of that happening to mine or any other child - and for me that includes immunisations.

God that was very rambling - sorry.

Good to hear sleep is better, Tipex. PJsmum, dd sleeps less at nursery too but it has got better the longer she's been there. The cots are in the baby room and I think they get her up as soon as she cries whereas at home I'd leave her and she often goes back to sleep for another half an hour or so. I'd definitely have a word with them to try and improve things.

Good luck for thursday, Angeliz. Starlover - what chest pain thread - are you OK?

starlover · 10/01/2006 20:38

hi all!

Linus has been forward facing for a while now and is much happier! we have the bebe confort iseos which is FANTASTIC!
I wanted it from birth, but unfortunately it wouldn't fit in our car rear-facing, so we had to get an infant carrier instead poo

anyway, the Which report put the britax isofix at top, and i think the maxi cosi was second! so that's a great choice.

That said, I think the results aren't that straightforward. I mean, the isofix came out top simply because you CAN'T secure it incorrectly. Other car seats lost points because there was a possibility they could be secured wrongly and thus less safely. Also, not all seats fit well in all cars...

So obviously you're best off with a seat that fits properly in your car and that IS fitted properly than having one from the top of the which report which doesn't fit quite as well iyswim?

They also only tested the bebe confort in one section whereas it really covers 2!
So, although it is a good starting point I don't think it's really the be all and end all of what you should/shouldn't buy!

starlover · 10/01/2006 20:44

good to see you nik! i like to see opinions on mmr from health professionals.. i am definitely erring on the side of caution because a lot of the research and stuff published on the net just goes right over my head!

re chest pain, i am seeing a doctor tomorrow morning after being hounded by mumsnetters telling me i probably have a deflated lung! lol
luckily tipex arrived and assured me there are many not-so-scary diagnoses i might get!

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 21:09

Hi All - thanks for that Nik - definitely helpful to hear. DH and I came to the conclusion today we will MMR and I feel happy with this decision (so does that mean I can go and spend the £250 on me ?).

Car seat wise, the maxi cosi came out 4th or something so definitely still a good one and tbh I didn't read it in too much detail just looked at the list. I would be happy with the maxi cosi but as we haven't bought one we will look at the m&p too.

Glad to hear the phd is going well so far Roosmum and 'getting stuff done' is very exciting !!

I have order the 'what to expect book' and might well get the 'what mothers do' with a gift voucher I had for christmas.

Tipex, I guess I might go back to work one day .... seriously though, I'm just going to take it as it comes. I love being with dd at the moment and hope to have another soon-ish (told dh I fancy April/May next year - because obviously one can book these things ), so guess it will be a while yet unless I get bored ! Most of the time its fine - I have definite things to do Mon, Tues and Fri and usually find people to play with on Weds or Thurs and I HAVE to get into going to the gym lots to fight the flab. Am going tomorrow and managed to stay off the wine last night and planning to tonight too....

PJsmum - sorry to hear about the sleep at nursery but hopefully she's just adjusting - one of my friend's dd's wouldn't be put down at all for her first week or so (i.e,had to be carried all the time) but is happy now.

Good luck at the docs tomorrow SL and of course, on Thurs at 10am Angeliz....

Phew......

pjsmum · 10/01/2006 21:30

I know she is just settling in to full time nursery but she is in such a mess by the time i pick her up. Tonight she slept for about 30 mins then woke crying, had a bottle still crying cos she is so tired so she has been in bed since half 6, no bath. the nursery have said that if they put her in the cots she screams and gets really upset, the same if they try and cuddle her/rock her etc, ive taken in her old bouncy baby chair but at the moment that is no help either. Il gve it another couple of weeks and see how she gets on. Its a shame as she does like going and is settled in every other way.
i havent even thought about the MMR, suppose i better had!
SL hope all goes well tomorrow at the docs
Angeliz- Will be thinking of you on Thursday, finger crossed for a positive outcome.
Going to bed now in case of another 4.30 awakening

starlover · 10/01/2006 21:32

pjsmum... could you take in her blanket from her cot? or a jumper you've been wearing? it might help settle her if it smells a bit more familiar>?

Hazellnut · 10/01/2006 22:42

PJsmum - sorry if I sounded like it was no big deal - I didn't mean it like that. It must be horrid for you (and dd).... I hope you aren't up at 4.30 this morning and that things get better for you both.

Hazellnut · 11/01/2006 13:45

Any better today PJsmum ???

How did you get on at the docs SL ?

I made it to the gym today, only to put dd in the creche and for her to start bawling her eyes out . It was really busy (change over time) and one other child was screaming the place down and I think it upset dd.... so the creche just told me to leave her and she would be fine but I was practically in tears as I did leave her and only did half an hour in the gym, dashed back to her and she was happy as larry !!

sweetbean · 11/01/2006 16:25

happy new year everyone
i just wanted to share with you that my daughter who was born on the 18 feb started walking yesterday she can do about 6 steps without falling over!! im so excited xxx

W0MBAT · 11/01/2006 16:51

Hello!! I haven't been on for a while and there are just soooo many messages, I don't know where to begin.

The MMR has been something I've been looking into recently and I have come to the decision that I will do it. I found the following on the web, which you might find of interest MMR - What you need to know .
I don't know if anyone watched the documentary about the link between autism and MMR last year, but it was seriously flawed. The guy that concluded that there was link was trying to market another vaccine.

I've got a Britax Isofix car seat and dd has been in it for over a month now. She's comfortable in it and loves being forward facing.

Good on all you mums that are going to the gym. The best I'm doing is staying away from all naughty things. Seems to be doing the trick as I've lost 3lbs in the past week.

Starlover - hope you are ok and the doctor's diagnosis is nothing serious. Trust MN to come to the conclusion that you've got a deflated lung!

W0MBAT · 11/01/2006 16:53

Sweetbean - wow another walker! Congratulations!
