Totally's PostGrads- you know who you are II

Totally's original thread was for TTC after MC. It continued long after Totally herself graduated, and is still going strong. Totally's grads was set up as a thread for pregnancy post MC - i.e. anyone who graduated from Totally's thread and anyone else who had experienced MC and was now pregnant. It, too, is still going strong.

Now, more and more of us have graduated from Totally's grads - including LouiseSH, whose Georgie was born asleep. I suppose that makes us postgrads. We have travelled together for a long time and would like to stay in touch, but the pregnancy post MC thread is starting to get very big, and I think it should be allowed to keep its focus on pregnancy post MC. May it be as wonderful a place for support for current "members" as it was for us.

So this thread is a place for us to keep in touch, share experiences, and provide support.

Coo-ee!!
how is everyone doing? muser how did you get on with the saline drops? It's horrid when they have a cold- always seems to get worse from 4am onwards too!

OP posts:
Muser · 24/05/2011 09:51

Ooh, new thread. Well done clareanna.

Sunday night was really quite good with the saline spray. Last night was a complete disaster though. Started well, fast asleep at 9.30 when we'd had some late ones creeping through. Then upstairs decided to stomp around and hammer things at nearly midnight. And she woke up. Took me until gone 2am to get her back to sleep. And then she woke up at 5am and the nose got stuffier and she wouldn't let me clear it out. I ended up putting her in the pram at 6am and taking her for a walk until she fell asleep. I am a zombie today.

Muser · 24/05/2011 09:53

Oh and the thing that's driving me mad is she doesn't have a cold. She just gets a stuffy nose overnight. I'm going to raise the end of the cot higher tonight and kill the neighbours if they start making noise.

Unbuffy · 24/05/2011 14:48

Clareanna you preempted me - damn shame I missed out on all the hard work list-updating Grin

Muser Clapol do a plug-in diffuser thingy which is rather good and seems to help clear snot overnight. Definately bump up the cot-end though too.

I'd do that with J, also rather snotty atm (gave it to me too, again, has gone straight to me chest and infected it AGAIN grrr) but he seems to be as restless a sleeper as his sister is - found him lying on his tummy, 180 degrees from where I put him down, when I went in this morning. Happily it WAS this morning, he slept from dream feed at 10.15 ish to 7.30 thismorning!!! Woke up and burbled a bit once but no crying and dropped off again without intervention!! I am so pleased (despite the rockboobs issue) - this has not happened much. In fact it's only happened about 5 times since he was born - I thought we'd cracked it a couple of weeks ago when he did those 5 times on the trot... and then it all went tits-up two-hourly again...

We've started solids properly now, lunch and tea, but poor thing gets a bit frustrated and famished with pure BLW as he can't get enough into his mouth and starts wailing, so have resorted to small quantities of babyrice and pureed fruit 'n' veg. It's funny and pathetic when he tries to get slippery fruit into his mouth and can't manage to keep it there - that little frown of concentration Smile and then he gets all cross... aw. Will however be moving over to just letting him get on with it as soon as possible!

V little other news here really, just an update on the Buffy Brigade, I'm off to find more tissues. Oh, and by the way Lansinoh is also fab as an overnight chapped nose remedy GrinGrin

Hope you're all well xxx

Redheadgal · 24/05/2011 18:14

Evening all. No news here. Sleep is still not happening - she spent 2.5 hours last night feeding. Am hoping a morning swimming, an afternoon next to the sea and an evening playing with her dad will knacker her out.

DorcasB · 24/05/2011 18:53

Hi all. Typing with left thumb, right hand holding sleeping baby so will be brief, just marking my place on lovely new thread!
Thanks for reassurance I am not the only one that takes ages getting their LO off to sleep- I was feeling slightly crazed and hysterical from lack of sleep I think! I am definitely in that 4am club- will be thinking of you all too as I sit up tonight in the wee hours trying to keep my eyes open! Okay I think I am getting RSI in my thumb, will have to return when my right thumb is free...

toomuchteaching · 24/05/2011 19:39

Oooh hello, very shiny!

Up from 2.20 til 4.00 here last night. But before and after were both a bit better, so I'm hoping we're getting there by approaching from either end. I will be literally over the moon when we get there, am really pleased for you buffs.

Bless him, DH went in at 2.20, first time he's got himself up and in to her before me. Unfortunately it just got louder and louder and in the end I had to go rescue him... he was holding J, just looking at her, not a known sleep tactic! I took over to shush-pat and she quietened down. He thinks it's just me, but he never gets the chance to practise the techniques, so in turn she probably associates comfort with me.

Weaning sounds fun buffs!

Wishing peaceful sleep... but knowing it won't happen here!

toomuchteaching · 24/05/2011 19:55

So I did 6.40-7.30 putting to bed tonight... she was being difficult... lying there babbling, then crying, then babbling, wriggling, crying again. At 7.30 I asked DH to come up and take a turn.

7.45 he shuts the door on screaming baby and comes downstairs.

I guess that would be my turn again then.

Grr... but she's now asleep.

Meita · 24/05/2011 20:59

Hello, wow all shiny and new! Quick, take a picture before it starts being stained with poo explosions, projectile vomit, BWL-induced mess on the floor, torture (i.e. sleep deprivation), breast milk squirts, snot, and general TMI-ness...

Can I just say, I love my baby more every day. He is so wonderful, nearly always happy, outgoing, interested in everything... these days he is extremely busy with exploring the world. He's been chasing after pheasants and ducks (and our poor old cat of course), paddling in the paddling pool, starting to play interactively with other babies (the old 'look here, have my toy - hang on, give that toy back' game), and seriously experimenting with his voice. I think it will be two weeks at most before he will be properly saying Mama and Papa. My heart melts. When he is out and about crawling all over, it is so cute, he goes after something, then realises he has gone quite far, makes a bee-line back to wherever I am, ultra-quick cuddle, and off he goes again. Just touching in at home base making sure everything is alright! It makes me terribly happy and proud that he finds that reassurance and confidence with me. (Odd little problems such as not sleeping in the night are so insignificant compared to all the good bits :) )
And then I think about the close call we had just after he was born - I'm glad I didn't know at the time that 1 in 10 babies who have GBS die of it, that it is the number one cause of neonatal death in the UK. I am so grateful that he is here and well. My heart breaks for all the mums out there (and here) who have to live without their babies.

Sorry for not namechecking, just had a happy moment and felt like sharing :)

HappyGirl1 · 24/05/2011 21:04

hi all

soo tired here, up at 5.30am this morning, she was all bright eyed and cute, took her into us but was wide awake so came down and joined Adrian and Christine with my bowl of weetabix!

great baby asleep TMT

Highly recommend the Calpol plug - it's AMAZING!

Unbuffy well done you on such fantastic sleep!!! I'm jealous Smile We are also on solids but she doesn't seem to be taking as much as she was a week ago.

hi redheadgal and dorcasb hope you have good nights tonight!

Ci only had 1 oz tonight before bed so i'm expecting a few feeds or i may do a dream feed i dont know yet, i am soo tired going to bed i get lazy with the dreamfeed sometimes and we had been doing so so well a few nights ago.

Does anyone know what to do when baby rolls onto side, i always put her back on her back (this is when sleeping in cot btw) but inevitably when I go in she is lying on her side again, not sure what i can do to keep her on her back, she is in a sleepsuit?

hi to everyone else too Smile]

contemplating a wine here!

HappyGirl1 · 25/05/2011 07:25

Morning everyone, hope ye had good nights?

C woke at 11.30, I didnt' hear her first time ever ever, feel so incredibly guilty apparently she was screaming.. I had gone to bed at 10.30.. it's so so strange cos i always hear her if she even so much as moves in the cot i'm awake and listening as I was most of the night.. Anyhow got her back down, then up at 4.30 and I took her into our bed which was a mistake i should have settled her back in cot i know but was just so tired but then i didn't sleep at all as she likes to roll over so i was basically just watching her but at least she slept that's the main thing.

Definitely going to buy that no cry sleep solution book today, haven't had a chance to get to bookshop to get it.

I'm really starting to believe the sleep breeds sleep thing too (not that i doubted anyone here but it's just a bit odd when you first think about it but it definitely makes sense)

so here starts another day, we are thinking of starting dancing babies today at 10.30 if i can get out on time (our washing machine has broken so i'm desperately trying to dry things on time). Fun fun.

big waves to all

Redheadgal · 25/05/2011 08:47

Sorry guys, can barely keep my eyes open. We were up for 4 hours last night, yes 4. No crying just wide awake, 'happy' noises. She woke up at 2 for a feed three-course meal and then stayed awake. We tried to put her back in her cot but she just 'chatted' to us. Even a second please-fall-asleep-on-my-boob-and-co-sleep-with-us feed didn't work. Harumph!

Enjoy baby dance today Happy and hope we both have a better night tonight!

northerngoldilocks · 25/05/2011 09:40

RHG and everyone else who's sleep deprived you have my sympathies. n was feeding every 1.5 hrs for the last 2 nights. He finally goes down in the evening between 7:30 and 8:30 and then wakes between 12:30-1:30 but then after that it's every 1.5 hrs feeding- plus the 1.5 hrs is from the start of a fees to the next! I'm very tired!!

He didn't sleep enough yesterday so I'm not surprised his sleep wasn't great. Although on a brighter note my new sling arrived this morning so I'm very excited about trying it out. Going to the cranial osteo this morning but will probs try it after that- could be embarrassing if I couldn't get him out!

PenguinsMummy · 25/05/2011 11:37

Just marking my place on the lovely shiney new thread!

Clodagh had her hip scan yesterday and third time lucky she seems to have normal hips - woohoo! Her right is completely normal and her left is very slightly shallow but not enough for her to need treatment. We just need to go back for another scan in 6 weeks to make sure that the hip ball joint has corrected itself naturally. Can't believe it as was really expecting to come home with a harness again Grin

Big hugs to all the sleep deprived. C still v snotty but getting better - she is 6 weeks already! And I am now back driving which is great but I am now back to nursery runs and swimming lessons but with an extra DD in tow!

Louise so pleased for you and looking forward to hearing whether GBOS is GB or GS!

Welcome Penguin that's great that C is all super healthy and doesn't need treatment.

We have had a hard few days, our gorgeous little nephew had another 'turn' (went all grey and floppy again) so he's been in hospital, he was born 6 weeks after C. Just been awful but thankfully he is okay although they don't know the cause which is so so scary. Last time they put it down to injecs but that's clearly not the reason now. Just so so thankful he is okay and out of hosp now. Can't wait to see him again hopefully next week.

Meita loved your post - somehow missed it last time! I just find it amazing how I love C more every day. I say that to DH all the time, how is it possible to keep loving someone more and more! I went to the gym yesterday for a whole hour and honestly I missed her so so so much, couldn't wait to see her although she had a great time with Daddy.

We have upped to 4 meals a day here, health visitor advised it given that she is moving about (in the kicking, rolling over, pushing herself up sense but for her that's quite a bit of moving for now - i don't mean crawling or anything!) she seems to be burning up a lot of energy. She is on the same 50th curve but health vis advised introducing a 4th meal and seemed to work quite well.

We are going to do a big big walk today. Mummy needs to lose some baby weight badly!

C still doesn't sleep in cot during the day, will sleep anywhere bouncer, car seat, buggy etc, not sure if i should be worried about that but she is so good I just don't really mind. MIL wasn't too impressed though when she heard she doesn't go to cot during the day but there we go.

Have a good day everyone Smile

DorcasB · 26/05/2011 19:48

Help! After our usual bedtime routine, I settled down on the glider chair with Little Dorcas for a feed and a cuddle, which normally results in her falling asleep and me at some point creeping into our bedroom and putting her down for the evening. Lengthy shushing may or may not be called for. But ithas been over an hour now and she is still attached to my right nipple! Its like having a newborn again. I have visions of being here all night at this rate... If only the dog knew how to make a cup of tea I'd be ok...

toomuchteaching · 27/05/2011 17:21

I was still going at 8.05pm last night Dorcas! In the end, when she woke at 10, I was just knackered, and she stayed in bed with me all night.

Did you make it away eventually!?!

Eventually, TMT, but it took a while! Put her in her cot, she woke 5 minutes later, so it was back to rocking and feeding...
Loopymumsy, yes you are mad! Have fun Smile

Muser · 28/05/2011 09:25

Sleep. I thought we were in for another bad night last night. She went to sleep at 9.30pm = very good. Then she woke up at 1.15am = very bad, she used to sleep nearly all the way through. So I was expecting another multiple waking night. I huffed at her and told her she didn't need to be awake and was quite capable of sleeping for longer. Feed of about 20 mins and then straight back to sleep did not make me more cheerful, it hardly seemed worth waking up for.

Next thing I knew it was 6am, she was thrashing a bit, and I told her to go back to sleep for a little bit. And then it was 8am! WOOOOHOOOO! God I feel better for that long stretch of sleep.

Gi1da · 28/05/2011 20:36

Ooh new thread! . Not healthy news from Gilda Towers. Following a decidedly unpleasant bout of gastroenteritis I now appear to have flu. Luckily R so far unnaffected by either but milk supply went down a bit during the 4 days I hardly ate so he's feeding very often. Hence no sleep either Sad.

On the plus side he's perfected rolling and is doing 360s all over the place. Which makes changing times interesting. Smile

Commiserations to fellow nosleepers and big thumbs up to sleepstar MiniMuser!

Will try catch up when my head is a little clearer!

Gi1da · 28/05/2011 20:41

Loopy Shock Shock Shock Actually camping with a newborn might be quite sweet, at least everything is nearby... Hope the weather is good for you!

Muser · 29/05/2011 16:27

Sorry to hear about the sickness Gilda, hope you're better soon
