fair enough. Grin

I see where you are coming from newmum. We dont have a problem with him settling at night here - its just that afternoon pain in the arse nap.

Its such a shame because I know if I let him sleep on me everyday at that time he would sleep for 2 hours straight.

But I must be strong...nursery is a-looming!!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/03/2011 20:31

Not sure how I missed your post earlier today SeaChelles! Luke does sometimes shove the muslin in his mouth but he just generally likes it near his face and if starts to stir he nuzzles into it. One waking at 1.30 sounds pretty good especially if it was for being wet. I agree that at nursery or childminder he may not get immediate attention just because it's not always possible but they shouldn't be leaving him for ages crying unless you have said you want them to do that. IME children do settle better with me than with mummies because they're not as sure that I will jump when they cry so don't try it but my youngest mindee was 5 months when she first came to me and I didn't leave her to cry unless I couldn't go to her because I was dealing with another child.

I remember when ds1 got his leg stuck during a daytime nap friggFRIGG he really screamed and I felt terrible. He didn't have his sleeping bag during the day and rarely moved very far so it was a bit of shock and was really wedged in Shock

Luke slept 9.30-12 and 3-5.45 today and still went to bed at 7.30!! We went to ds1's preschool for an open day today and I had him in the sling, he smiles at everyone and got so much attention. At one point I was talking to ds1's teacher and she just kept looking at Luke and smiling Grin

He's still not fussed about his solids, had weetabix today and only ate 1/2 but was crying for milk 10 mins later Confused

We feed Grace to sleep at night which i know is another "rod for our own backs" situation but we don't set out to do it like that she just always seems to fall asleep having her last bottle but it's the daytime sleeps that are a nightmare. It's not to bad when we're in the house as i can just sit bouncing her for as long as it takes but if we're out it's no fun at all as she just seems to be way to stimulated when we're holding her, it's as if she can't switch off! I figure if i get it sorted at home first it'll be easier at my mums or my sisters and then at nursery, well i hope so anyway!

SeaChelles · 02/03/2011 20:37

Thanks cinammon. Smile I do realise they wouldn't leave him to scream for yonks, but I would rather be in the position with him when that time comes that he won't NEED to screamm for ages as he will be able to tend to himself for a little while IYSWIM? I know you prob all think am being mean, but unfortunately with Olly it seems to be the only way that works - if I go to him too frequently he is wide awake because he thinks mummy is coming to play! Too alert for his own good this one.... Hmm

Olly also has 1/2 a weetabix with formula this morning Cinammon - he seemed to really enjoy it. Am sorry that Luke doesn't seem to be liking solids much still....Sad Am sure he will get there in his own time.

SeaChelles · 02/03/2011 20:40

Newmum - Olly also has his last bottle straight before bed. I think you are in the same boat as me with the not switching off thing - he is a nightmare to get to sleep in the day unless being cuddled by me. Its like he is just far to interested in everything to drop off and fights it something rotten!

He does however go off for the afternoon nap in his cot straight away now - its just that wake up after the half hour period that I need to tackle. Fingers crossed.

newmum001 · 02/03/2011 20:43

Chelle i honestly think Olly is the boy version of Grace, they sound sooo similar with the bouncing and having lots of energy and being really alert! No one thinks you're mean we all have to do what we have to do to make things easier in the long run!

Cinnamon grace can take or leave solids to be honest, she took to it really well at first but now it's a bit hit and miss she doesn't really like sweet stuff but wolfs down veg etc, she grabbed cheese out of my hand before and really seemed to like it and i let her try a bit of my chicken soup at lunchtime and she loved that as well, i think she's going to be a savory rather than sweet kind of girl!

I want a new pram again, this will be my third if i get one (although DP will absolutely not allow it so i don't know why i'm even looking) we have no room for another pram but i've got my heart set on a Quinny Buzz, i love love love them!

cinnamongreyhound · 02/03/2011 20:54

I did exactly the same with ds1 SeaChelles, decided I would rather have him crying in the safe environment his own home than dealing with everything that comes with going to a stranger all day and crying then too. He would fall asleep on his own at night but cried in the day as there was too much going on. His childminder told me he hardly ever cried at nap time so I hope it was worth it. I have sat many times rocking a mindee to sleep/letting them sleep on me but I didn't do it with ds1 Blush and have been very lucky with Luke he very rarely needs it.

He does get excited when he sees the pot he just doesn't eat a large volume but then I didn't start with ds1 until he was 23 weeks and Luke is only 24weeks so I guess the fact that he still prefers milk isn't too terrible.

MammyG · 02/03/2011 20:59

Chelle & newmum Phoebe is a bit tetchier when settling during the daytime too. I dont do CC simply because I cant hack it but what I did with her and DS 2 was sit in the the room while they whinge and cry. With Phoebe it took 3-4 days (with DS2 was the bones of two weeks but he was older when I started) I bring ina book or a magazine and just sit near their cot where they can see me. I will occasionally make a hush sound but or stroke thier faces but no picking up and no major interaction. I found I could handle the crying and whining if I was there and they didnt feel alone. These days I pop Phoebe in the cot and potter about the room quietly putting a few a things away etc and by the time Im done she is asleep.

Phoebe is flying it on solids - she even had a little biscotti thingy today and was totally intrigued - funniest face! Must introduce her to gluten now I guess.
I had a lazy ish day! went to my mums (even tho she wasnt there) so I would chill out as at home I would just keep doing things. So had a couple of hours where we were all calm!

newmum001 · 02/03/2011 21:10

Mammy i often go to my sisters during the week when she's not there, if nothing else it's a change of scene and like you said it stops me being constantly on the go at home. Also she always has really yummy snacks and Grace loves it over there! I shall be there all day next Wednesday as our road is being resurfaced and i can't be arsed with Grace waking up every 5 minutes cause of drilling etc!

newmum001 · 02/03/2011 21:11

Oh and also i read 10 whole chapters of a book today, i love reading but i honestly never thought id see the day again where i could sit with a brew and some gingernuts and read 10 chapters it was lovely!

watersprite · 02/03/2011 23:49

I've just wrote a mammoth post and bloody lost it all Angry

watersprite · 03/03/2011 00:15

patito, lumpybananapuree dd1 had a lovely time at the cinema. I'm so shattered now though feel like I've been constanly trying to play catch up all day.

Dixiebell I'm sure now for a few day's Maria-Ann has been saying 'mama' but when I say it back she just smiles. My O/H did ring me today whilst i was out with dd1 and said she had said it again [shocked] in a good way. She has also started making new sounds and becomeing very chatty Smile

Seachelles, lumpybananapuree will get a tomee tippe tomorrow and try it, been so busy today.

Seachelles I've tried everthing possible at night to get Maria-Ann to sleep just like you are doing with Olly. I feel like I can do no more. I'm so tired though. During the day she will only nap on me even if i try to put her down she kickes off to the point where she becomes hysterical and holds her breath. If i go out of the room she will start screaming so I'm unsure what to do Sad I've tried talking to her whilst I'm in the kitchen but even this doesn't stop her from screaming. I got 2 hrs last night and that's because I put her in her swing, she still has no dummy and has the comfort rabbit instead. Think she just wakes up to make sure I'm still there because when I pat her she will go back off but constanly wakes during the night. Have to go she up now Sad

Dixiebell · 03/03/2011 04:37

For those having trouble w daytime naps, Arlo was just the same. We did baby whisperer - put him down, he'd cry, after a minute or so we'd pick him up and shush him, sometimes this required opening the curtains a bit or talking to him, or just patting and shushing. As soon as he was calm, back into cot, continue patting and/or shushing. DH was home so had some help, but after about a week he started crying much less and taking less time to drop off. Now he goes down fine in day, and often settles himself, we just put him down and leave the room, sucking his thumb to calm himself if he's crying. Worked a treat, I think it was just consistency that did it. He usually only sleeps for 30min stretches too, although he us getting better at going longer and resettling himself if he wakes after 30mins - I don't rush in. We have a video monitor, which is set up behind his head as it has a red light on it. Sometimes I find him head back just staring at the red light when he's woken from a nap - it's like he knows I'm watching him, and us saying okay mummy, I'm awake, time to come and get me! Anyway, just wanted to reassure you guys - I thought Arlo would never nap in cot during day, but now he's good as gold, and it wasn't too painful.

Got our first swimming lesson today and I've started worrying about practicalities - what do I take him in in, pushchair? Carseat? Where would I leave them? Or should i just carry him, which a bit difficukt with bags too...Do I need to take my own changing mat? How do I
get myself dry and dressed?! Also tried my cossie on last night which I haven't worn for years, and let's just say it doesn't look quite the same with nreasfeeding boobs stuffed into it - hope I don't pop out!!! I do have bikinis but thought that might be inappropriate for a baby swim lesson! Sure it will be good once we get there but the logistics are not!

We haven't done this for a while : Arlo 21 + 3

cinnamongreyhound · 03/03/2011 07:06

Most pools you leave them in changing room, one we got to has little bike lock type things that you put £1 in like the lockers. I take ruck sack so it's on my back and carrying no problem. They usually have changing tables with straps so I dress Luke strap him in then sort myself or one I've been to have playpens in the communal changing room. I'm sure everyone will be feeling just as self conscious in their cossies!! Have fun Dixiebell Grin

newmum001 · 03/03/2011 08:58

watersprite, grace used to kick off when i was out of the room, it is so exhausting to never get 5 minutes to yourself. In the end i just had to let her scream otherwise id have gone insane and never would have got anything done.

I've not got this bouncy thing now though, it's a fisher price bounce and spin froggy (if i knew how to do links id do one) and she loves it so i just move it round the house when i'm cooking or cleaning and it entertains her for ages. I know it's an added expense but it really has been a life saver, before we had it i literally couldn't do anything but now i just put it in the room i'm in and sit her in it and i can make tea or sort washing or do the hoovering etc. Have a look on ebay for something similar it might help.

lumpybananapuree · 03/03/2011 09:10

Chelle Glad he settled! I've never done the cc thing. I'm just a mean mummy & let them cry it out! They now both settle anywhere!

Dixie I carry, don't bother with a car seat or puggy. do you have a sling? as for getting changed, most changing rooms have changing tables. I usually get them changed 1st so they're dry and warm, then sort myself out. If there isn't a change table I do a sort of knee hold on the bench! Lay him down & hold him on with my leg whilst hopping around trying to get dressed! Bit like when you go in a public loo & theres no lock! Trying to hold the door shut & get your trousers down etc! Grin

Going to a party today ant a soft play place! I hate them! The kids don't play with each other & we don't get to sit & gossip cos you have to be with them!! Whats the point! Oh well! have agood day all!

Debs75 · 03/03/2011 09:58

dixie when i took dd2 swimming we had to take our own changing mats as they had no changing places. we couldn't take buggies in so she was in her car seat. I also took 2 towels, 1 to wrap her in when we got out and 1 to lay her on whilst i got dressed. as for swimwear you can get a waterproof nappy cover which is like a wetsuit pant. we also used a neoprene wetsuit as they can get so cold when swimming

saoirse86 · 03/03/2011 11:20

Dixie it's probably a bit late now but I always carry her. I don't find I need much. I go with my swim stuff on under my clothes (I've been wearing a bikini because it's all I have) so I need knickers and bra for me, purse, clean nappy and wipes, swimsuit for Orlaith, 2 towels, plastic bag for wet clothes. It's not much more than I seem to carry every day anyway!
Our local baths have nowhere to put prams or car seats. I though it was by law that any public place with loos has to have disabled loos and changing facilities for babies. Confused They have family changing rooms at ours where the changing tables have a strap so the baby's safe while you get changed.

Orlaith's become a bit of a nightmare with naps. She seems to have decided she doesn't really need many naps, she just goes quiet like she's about to fall asleep then after 10 minutes she's awake and smiley and playing with her toys. Confused The last few days she's only had one actual nap a day for about 45 mins but done this sleepy thing 2-3 times a day.

PIL's were over last night and it's the first time I've realised that they don't know how to play with a child despite having had 3! They will chat to her but if she goes quiet they just do nothing until she starts to move about again or smile or whatever. I even gave FIL a toy to entertain her with and he didn't seem to know what to do. It was a stacking toy and he kept properly telling her off when she didn't stack them or dropped the bit she was holding! Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 03/03/2011 13:04

I love soft play places lumpybananapuree, maybe becuase ds1 is a bit older he goes off and I just love watching children play. Haven't been since Luke was born though.

My mum is a bit funny with playing saoirse86, she will happily cuddle Luke and jiggle him around if he is getting tired but if he wants to play she just leaves him alone and says I'll leave him while he's happy. I often just lay him on the floor to have a kick but she won't talk to him or play with him then just leaves him alone.

Had Luke weighed today and he's 18lb at 24 weeks, although the hv told me he's actually 25 weeks. When I questioned it she said we have these special charts that work it out differently. Surely there's
only one way to work it out, count from the day they were born?!? He's still just under 75th centile and ds1 was the same weight at 14 weeks. She actually told me Luke is more normal Shock

JodeyBogeyPicker · 03/03/2011 14:57

Afternoon ladies. Lots going on as usual. Harlyn has just done his first front to back roll! At last!! He also says babababababa and mamama and loves to scream and listen to his own voice.

Well my summer seaty thing arrived yesterday and Harlyn loves it. I've also recieved my mouli to purée that lumpy mash in the freezer and two silly billyz bibs. Harlyn is doing so well with his food. He just lives everything. He is a very messy eater as he loves to grab the spoon and try to put it in his mouth followed by his fist meaning he just gets food everywhere!!

Another first to happen today was that he slept in his pushchsir all snuggly wrapped up for 2hrs 15mins! This NEVER happens. It was right after this nap that he did his half roll!

SeaChelles · 03/03/2011 15:33

Aw...poor Olly! Just put him down for a late nap as we have been out and about and he woke up after 5 mins sobbing which is unusual for him so I went straight up and found him face down! He'd managed to do a full back to front roll whilst in his sleeping bag. Bless him. Went straight back off as soon as i turned him back over. Guess he aint gonna be one for sleeping on his tummy! Wink

Debs75 · 03/03/2011 15:41

Not much has been happening on here today.

Just found out today that our local surestart centre is closing in 3 weeksSad It is such a shame as it gets used loads for play activities, toy libraries, midwife clinics, hv clinics, breadtfeeding support and loads of other stuff. I know the cuts have to save money but it is really unfair when it is such a popular place in such a deprived neighbourhood.

Lucy chomped on me today when I fed her, luckily she has no teeth yet but it bloody hurt. She was getting tired, as soon as I put her in her pram she went to sleep.

Cinnamon I would of thought just count every Saturday and Lucy would be another week old but some HV's decide that by the next Monday they are a week old already so when you say she is 4 weeks 2 days they will often say 5 weeks. Daft isn't it

cinnamongreyhound · 03/03/2011 16:15

That's rubbish Debs75, ours has lots of cutbacks but are staying open. I can even understand if they put him as 25 weeks instead of 24+3 but she actually wrote down 25+, so I'm stumped!!

Sounds like with SeaChelles Olly and harlyn rolling that luke is the last to do any rolling still just gets up on his side and then drops back down!
