Totally's original thread was for TTC after MC. It continued long after Totally herself graduated, and is still going strong. Totally's grads was set up as a thread for pregnancy post MC - i.e. anyone who graduated from Totally's thread and anyone else who had experienced MC and was now pregnant. It, too, is still going strong.

Now, more and more of us have graduated from Totally's grads - including LouiseSH, whose Georgie was born asleep. I suppose that makes us postgrads. We have travelled together for a long time and would like to stay in touch, but the pregnancy post MC thread is starting to get very big, and I think it should be allowed to keep its focus on pregnancy post MC. May it be as wonderful a place for support for current "members" as it was for us.

So this thread is a place for us to keep in touch, share experiences, and provide support.

(This is the first time ever I'm starting a thread - hope it works out...)

A somewhat belated happy new year from me to all present and future thread babies and their families!

Baby's first Christmas was quite hard work. Ianto behaved beautifully (well, he slept through most of it) but his little cousin, six weeks younger than him, kept everyone on their toes! Glad to be back home now, my parents joined us for the new year and my mum is staying on for nearly a week because DP is leaving for a conference tomorrow.

Congrats Sparkly, Malteser and Zayja - hope you will be joining us soon! :) As well as some others Wink

Hope to hear lots from you all in the next 12 months :)

Hi all

Keep loosing this thread!!!!

Just thought i d update you all: I m having a chemical pregnancy.I got very faint positives last Wed,Thurs,Fri and Sat starting at cd27 then yesterday line s not there used a clearblue digital "not pregnant" .Started bleeding last night.

Was very upset last night but i knew this wasn t a "sticky" one as lines so faint. You just know don t you?

Now i m even more positive that its going to be very soon.I had a CP last year the month before i concieved Georgie and i ll be extra fertile this month. Also, Dec was the first month i ovulated and only 2 months since giving birth and i got pg.Trying to look at that as something to celebrate.Everything is working just as it should.

Next month will be mine,i just know and if not it'll be the month after.I know i ll have Georgie's brother or sister this time next year.

Hi to all, hope you re all ok? XXX

Meita · 06/01/2011 17:23

Hi everyone..happy new year..

What a Christmas, we were ALL sick and of course Andrew caught something again so we ended up back in hospital from new years day til yesterday :-(

he had a relapse of the bronchiolitis and on top of that had a staph pneumonia infection- total nightmare..

So all that I was looking forward to - Xmas, two weddings, my birthday etc were all a bit of a non event but here's hoping 2011 will improve drastically!!

MEITA I'm glad your Christmas got off to a start after all that trouble..

LOUISE sorry to hear about the cp, but great that you realise it will help your fertility. A friend of mine is following the Deanna plan- have you heard of it..

I think of little Georgie often, may she rest in peace in little heaven xxx

louisesh · 13/01/2011 15:22

Hi all

Indeed may my beautiful Georgie rest in peace,Can t believe she should be over 3 months old now.Poor.poor Georgie XXXX

Yes, we are too following the egg meets sperm plan.It boasts a 40% monthly success rate as opposed to a normal 20% success rate!!!! If the first month is anything to go by its certainley doing something!!!!!

Hope Andrew is ok?

Hope you re feeling better now?

AlbaDeTamble · 14/01/2011 22:34

Just popping my head round the door to say hello. Not too good at thumb typing on my phone whilst feeding just yet, and the rest of the time is for sleep, so am lurking for now but will post properly soon...

Waves to all

Unbuffy · 15/01/2011 09:14

hooray Alba lovely to see you!!

How's things? Any names yet or are we sticking to DeTambleJunior? Grin

Waves to all, and hugs to Louise too

Meita · 15/01/2011 21:49

Hi Alba, good to see you!

Lee, so glad Andrew is better, hope he stays well this time! It must have been such a nightmare. I remember when they put the feeding tube down Ianto's nose, when he was only just 5 days old - it nearly broke my heart. It's soooo hard to see our little ones suffer, isn't it?

In other news, we have started Ianto on bananas, carrots and apples... Grin (in fact, just a day before that new weaning study came out) He loves the banana, eats loads (i.e. 2 spoonfuls perhaps). But when you change what goes in, you shouldn't be surprised if what comes out also changes... what a mess!

OP posts:
Gi1da · 19/01/2011 20:02

So glad Andrew is well Lee, sorry haven't posted to say so before, have been reading but seem to be unable to deal with posting on more than one thread at a time. So busy with all the new babies on the other side. What a journey we have all been on.

Am utterly shattered here, Ren seems to have a right old hussy fit between 10 and 2 am which must be a delight for the neighbours. I'm sleeping in the lounge with him but blimey he can make a racket! DH is being brilliant and doing all the house stuff but also looks like a shadow of his former self. I totally bow down in awe to those of you with other children too - how on earth do you do it?

Big wave to everyone Smile

Gi1da · 19/01/2011 23:36

Smile ah, that would be hissy fit.

Not quite sure what a hussy fit is but imagine it involves less grizzling and more lycra.

Gi1da · 20/01/2011 13:25

Oops unfairly maligning the little man, he was really good last night, at least he was quiet when awake. How long does it take to do anything with a newborn though? I still haven't finished tidying the lounge and putting washing away. Lunchtime already and my breakfast cup of hotchocolate is only half drunk! Am I being really rubbish or are babies wrapped in an invisible cloak of quantum timewarp?

How's the varied food going Meita? DH read the article on introducing foods earlier but I haven't googled yet.

AlbaDeTamble · 21/01/2011 00:31

You and me both with the yelling babies in the middle of the night Gilda... I get approx 6-8 hours of cluster feeding from 6pm, interspersed with a few hissy fits. I expect it to wake everyone, especially DS1 since his door and mine both open, but the rest of the family are all oblivious! The 3-2-1 relax from hypnosis has carried me through a few screaming fits..... along with using 'this too will pass' as a bit of a mantra... and remembering just how lucky I am to have this screaming little bundle of joy Grin

Major milestone yesterday, have now been bf beyond the point where I gave up in agony with DS1, and despite mastitis and mild cracked nipples it's all bearable and way better this time round, in no small part due to doula support and lactation consultant. Hard work but I'm so happy we're managing. Midwife got me started on pumping today too, to try to up my supply and then bottle feeding the EBM after regular feeds as we're quite a way below birthweight now (thankfully they're quite relaxed about it, apparently latching well, so expecting it all to come good and I'm on medical orders to stay in bed and feed, eat, cuddle my baby and sleep!) I was amazed he took the bottle well and still happily went back to me, so once I can express more than an ounce at a time, DH can do the occasional feed, yay! Not yet, but good to know it'll be possible.

Roll on the magic 6 week mark when it all gets easier! Trying to remember to enjoy my newborn but I know these first weeks will end up only a hazy memory...

unbuffy yay on getting to magic 6 weeks!
lee I hope Andrew is fighting fit again now
Louise, huge virtual hugs, I think of you and Georgie often
Meita weaning already! Time flies... We started at 20 weeks with DS1, milk alone just wasn't cutting it and it did him no harm. Such fun, enjoy all the mess!
Waves to everyone. I think he may just have fallen asleep so I need to try to get my head down...

Meita · 21/01/2011 11:10

Hello!

Gi1da I so know what you mean about how people manage with older kids around? Seems totally impossible. Though, actually, would be correct to say seemed impossible. Now that Ianto has definitely left that 'newborn' stage behind, whilst it is terribly exciting to see how he develops and grows, I'm already missing 'Ianto-the-newborn' IYSWIM. And I find myself thinking "No I don't need to keep that box that X came in, in order to sell it once Ianto has outgrown it, because we will be able to use it for DC2..." Eeek I must be going mad!

Regarding neighbours and crying babies: It came as a revelation to me when I read in a baby book that most new parents worry about disturbing their neighbours, and that it is this that really makes the crying be so stressful. Whereas most neighbours don't really mind at all! Either they have had babies themselves, or they somehow manage to just sleep through it all. So, please, stop worrying about your neighbours. You have enough real worries and I bet your neighbours are totally understanding!

And yes, everything takes forever. I have now resigned myself to do stuff in the evening when Ianto is asleep. During the day I'm just glad if I manage to get to appointments on time and if the mess doesn't get much worse.

BTW the weaning study is not a huge thing. It's no new research, just a review of the existing research. Basically it concludes that there is little evidence to support the WHO's 6months position, but there is little evidence against that position either.
It's only concerned with exclusive breastfeeding. If you (partially) FF, it's not relevant anyway.
Basically it argues that:

  • Some EBF babies might be low on iron before 6 months. (You don't get iron through BF, rather, babies have stores from birth that get used up). Therefore it might be good for some babies to be weaned (or topped up with FF) before 6 months.
  • The main downside of early weaning/FF, i.e. the risk of infections through unhygienic utensils/water, is something you can easily circumvent in this country.
=> So there is little contra early weaning, and a little bit pro.

Alba yay on successful BF! Though mind you, expressing and topping up by bottle is hard work. My supply was very low too, due to Ianto not feeding well for a while, so he needed top-ups, which we luckily still had stored in the freezer from when we were in hospital and he was tube-fed. By the time the last reserves had gone, my supply was back up, and we eventually weaned him off the bottles again. But those first 2 weeks of topping him up - always giving him the breast, then the bottle, then expressing (and don't forget all the sterilising etc.) ... well, I don't really have many memories from that time!

So, Ianto has now had dried apricot puree, broccoli, and 'cream of papaya' in addition to the other stuff. He seems to be liking it, and is ... whispers finally sleeping through longer in the night... Recently we had been back to waking every two hours in the night. Though who knows if that is due to the food. It might just have been the infamous 4-months sleep regression.

Ok, Ianto awake from his late morning nap, gotta go do some baby-entertaining :)

OP posts:
Unbuffy · 21/01/2011 14:45

Hi all

This will be a quicky due to sleep deprivation and asssociated keyboard inability! Hmph magic 6 week, I feel better, less cs pain etc, but colic seems to have set in, plus a growth spurt (are the 2 connected?? Not sure) so instead of the fairly reasonable 3-4hour sleeps at night we're back to 2 hours maximum. And dd not sleeping either. and mil staying while dh on shift all week so no peaceful slobbery with cbeebies either. On the plus side, feeding apparently going well - weight up to 11lb 11oz yesterday (!!!!) How long is it supposed to take to double birhtweight co we;re nearly there? This is ridiculous!

Glad to see ALBA and GILDA over this side, will give me peeps to rant n mutter to about no sleep and stuff Grin, and 2 hour night time screaming sessions (him not me, mostly)

Good luck with the weaning Meita, are you doing BLW or the other?

oops feeding calls xx

toomuchteaching · 21/01/2011 14:46

Hello! Can't believe I'm here. I just wanted to copy what I've written on the other thread, because it applies mostly to those of you who went before me... and I want you to hear it and can now see that keeping up with two threads may well be impossible.

" I got interrupted by the screaming for a feed last night and just wanted to add a couple of things. Thank you for all the congratulations, glad we get the name approval, it's funny her middle names are so popular now, but they're actually her great- and great great- grandmothers' names, how fashions go round.

Firstly, I didn't find mumsnet at all until I was pregnant with Jemima. I'd spent the most horrific 8 months after my MC not knowing where to turn, and although I was never on the original TTC thread (and wish I had been) the welcome here was utterly amazing, and I couldn't have done the last few months without you all. So a big thank you. I'm passing round the brie and champagne truffles in utter gratefulness for all the times you've answered my silly questions, slapped me with a wet fish (where's it gone) and looked out for me.

Secondly, louisesh my heart breaks for you all over again. I cannot imagine how you're coping. But you're being amazingly strong, and I will keep wishing for a BFP for you soon.

And finally... good luck to everyone still on the list. It feels like it'll never happen, but when it does it is honestly the best thing ever, truly cannot be beaten, and every moment of pain is worth it in the end. Whilst Jemima will never replace the little one we lost in Zambia and that baby will always be in my heart, she is so perfect that I'm just thankful things turned out ok. What a journey. I hope you all get there soon too. "

Right... Jemima is waking for a feed, I'll be back for advice on coping with that refusing to settle between 9pm and 2am even though I've fed at least six times thing soon no doubt! I hope you're all loving this new baby thing as much as I am, despite the utter exhaustion.

Meita · 22/01/2011 13:38

TMT, welcome! Beautiful post, and I second the wishes for Louise and a soon-to-be BFP.

Unbuffy, well with the weaning, I had been thinking about BLW (though my mum thinks I'm bonkers). As Ianto has been showing so much interest in our meals, and can sit up, and grab and put things in his mouth, I figured I'd put some food in his reach and see what happens. So, banana. Cue lots of mashing and squeezing and squashing but no eating. Soon afterwards, I sort of offered him a slice of tangerine - and with just a little help, he licked it all up (out of the skin, IYSWIM). Next day, he went for another slice of tangerine with lots of determination and intent! However, I think the tangerine gave him the runs. And because I know that bananas help with the runs, I gave him some more banana, but because I really wanted him to have some, I ended up mashing some up and giving it to him on a spoon - a big no-no in the BLW book! But he loved it and eat it all up. Same with the cooked apples (also good against the runs). So I figured that Ianto is perhaps still a bit too small for BLW (they do say not to start before 6 months) but he liked the stuff he had so much that I decided to keep giving him some food. So I'm just trying to help him feed himself (he loves grabbing the spoon and aiming it at his mouth, though mostly he misses Wink) and for now it's mostly purees and mash, with the occasional stick of cucumber or broccoli floret to chew on. My intention is to start cooking BLW suitable food for our dinners and letting Ianto play around with it, but to give him stuff that actually ends up inside him for lunch. I'm simply not supermum enough to cook three baby-suitable meals a day and waiting around until he's finished with it and cleaning all the mess up.
So, it's sort of a mix - and tbh, mostly I'm just following the tip of my nose and seeing where it will lead me!

sorry for a sort of weaning obsessed post - littleones do tend to focus one's attention on odd topics!

OP posts:
Unbuffy · 22/01/2011 14:41

Meita I did much the same with dd - some mashed up stuff and some 'grab' food, have not the patience for full-on blw! But it seemed to work as she'll try anything you throw at her now ibcluding (over Christmas) Stilton, brie, pickled onions and gherkins. smoked salmon is currently fdavourite but v rare treat, and has been since 9 montghs old (she is just 2). way better than lots of fussy purees imo! Have you tried ripe mango? Both grabby AND squishy!

apols for dretful 1 finger typing, feeding ds as typing. He WON'T STOP EATING... 5 long feeds last night - can hardlyt keep my eyes open today Confused
