A starter for 10 on our Sept 2010 babies as their first Christmas comes nearer! Can't believe we're there already; I was barely pregnant last Xmas!

Harlyn quite often sicks up clear liquid. Not sure why though. Could just be what is left over from feed that the body didn't need/use? Maybe? Might be worth checking with HV. If you find out let me know.

Saoirse FAB FAB FAB idea x x Xmas Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 16:24

Sounds good saoirse86!

How long does Jack go between feeds beaditAli? Just wondering if there is a reason you are worried about him only taking 3-4oz? Although I breastfed both of mine I know Luke takes much less than ds1 did as he only has one breast per feed. He has dropped to the 75th centile whereas ds1 was on or above 98th centile from about 3 weeks (he had put on weight when weighed at 5 days old!). They are very different babies and ds1 was majorly food orientated, was screaming for milk the moment he woke up. Luke is awake and very happy for ages before he wants feeding, apart from at night when he has obviously woken up because he's hungry. I was on this thread a while ago. There is clearly a political agenda behind some of the posters but there are also some really interesting ideas about feeding and lots of links to research too.

mapletrees · 06/12/2010 16:24

Hey, Chelle, I'm no expert, but we were giving Louis Infacol. He had real trouble with wind at first and we did notice it helped when we started giving it to him at about 3 weeks. We stopped giving it at about 9 weeks, when he seemed to be getting better at burping, and didn't notice him getting worse again. I think it works with a cumulative effect, iykwim, so you could try cutting it down to every other feed, rather than going cold turkey, and see if it makes a difference. You can keep giving it up to a year (or more), but I doubt that's necessary for many people.

JodeyLea · 06/12/2010 16:28

newmum Harlyn has been so much better on C&G comfort but it is too thick to use Gaviscon so I'm going to try the normal C&G first infant milk as his reflux is awful without the Gaviscon. I'll let you know how he gets on with it.

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 16:29

Sorry chelle1986 my computer is doing something strange so took me ages to post that! We only used infacol for a short time and it didn't seem to help so stopped. Baby massage was much more effective for ds1, agree with mapletrees though just cut it down and see how he goes.

I would suggest it was mostly digested milk beaditAli but not if it was straight after a feed. Try posting a thread on the breast and bottle feeding page and see if you get any answers there if you don't want to wait to speak to a hv?

sassy34264 · 06/12/2010 16:30

beaditali
I would think the clear liquid is bile maybe? He could have reflux, or if he is teething he might be swallowing a lot of saliva. Just a guess though, don't know for definite.

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 16:36

cinnamon we've never been told anything about centiles. Is it something you track yourself or is it done by HVs? I'd love to do it. Is it in the back of our red health books?
Also not sure what he weighs as I haven't been to clinic for while but I know he gained really well in the first few weeks and when he was around 4-6weeks he was taking more in a feed. Just seems really odd that he's reduced his intake at feeds and I think he fights napping because he's hungry but then won't feed because he's so sleepy. Seems like a vicious circle sometimes Hmm He also feeds better in the night which won't encourage him to sleep through the night.....???

mapletrees · 06/12/2010 16:42

cinnamon the tribe would be very welcome, although my house is very UN-toddler proofed yet. Maybe we could find somewhere out? Shame it's so cold as the parks are great. Otherwise, I could come into town and meet you for a coffee next time you're in at the weekend? I don't have the car during the week so getting to Brandon might be tricky.

saoirse I like your plan Xmas Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 16:47

It's at the back of the red book, when they weigh the babies here they write it down and they then plot it on the graph with the centile lines on it. Here if your baby drops more than 2 they want to monitor the baby more closely but I am sure he was just born big because he was 2 weeks late and that he will settle out somewhere that is better suited to his natural size. My ds1 was 2 1/2lb's heavier at the same age Xmas Shock.

Are you sure he's not feeding better at night because there's nothing going on? Luke has now started smiling at me while he's feeding which makes my nipple drop out of his mouth but he then gets really upset that he's not eating anymore! Plus if he goes longer between feeds at night he will more likley be more hungry. Can you feed him before he starts getting too tired even if he's not showing signs of being hungry and try to change the pattern?

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 16:53

Sorry mapletrees x posts! There aren't many toddler friendly places in Cambridge, cheeky monkey's is great but it's in fulbourn so a bit far out. The boys and I love Newnham common in the summer, especially when there's water in the pool. DH has grown up around Cambridge and has worked at the uni for 26 years so he hates the place! Takes a lot of persuasion for him to take me when he goes would rather go on his bike and come straight back home! I happen to think its a lovely place apart from the traffic!!

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 17:10

Just napped for 10 mins and woke up hungry. Did 3 oz half asleep and won't take any more. Burped him now he's wide awake and will be hungry again in 2 hours. Surely at 11 weeks 3 oz is not much in a feed?? Xmas Hmm

comixminx · 06/12/2010 17:16

I also had a disturbing dream on about that day, Jodey: it was when I had a really dreadful disturbed night's sleep because Aphra was crying so much. Horrible. Don't want to think about it.

Melly, is it you who's in Stroud? I'm near there right now, visiting Mum & Dad for the long weekend! Not a good time to go visiting / meeting up, especially as we're off back to Oxford tomorrow, but another time...

My DP has all sorts of names for A! Currently it's "cheesy wotsit" because the milk she spits up smells a bit cheesy! Xmas Grin

Ali, might be a good idea to ring NHS Direct with throwing up that clear liquid - you don't want to run any risk of dehydration after all, especially if he's not taking as much in his feed. Anyway that's what I'd do. I rang them the other day for something minor and thought they were very good.

PS I'm in Oxford - this meet up idea sounds great! When the weather's warmer, I take it?

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 17:22

But it's 2 hourly, there's some kind of calculation about oz per lb of weight that you then divide by the number of feeds. If he's happy between feeds and has plenty of wet/pooy nappies I personally wouldn't try to force him have anymore but that's just me. Others may be able to advise otherwise.

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 17:25

Thanks comix his nappies are still really wet and he doesn't have a temperature so will just hope he doesn't do it again and wait to phone NHS. Although do they have staff who know about bambinos? Anytime I've rung before they just tell me to see a GP....?
We switched to size 2 teats on his bottles to see if it helped and it has though only a slight difference.
Oh it is such complicated stuff isn't it...? Xmas Grin

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 17:27

yeah 2.5 oz per lb of weight. Need to either buy some scales or go to baby clinic! Xmas Blush as not sure what he weighs now since two weeks ago. oooops!

sassy34264 · 06/12/2010 17:47

Nevermind beaditali you're better than me, mine haven't been weighed since 8 weeks old and they are now 16! Think they are ok though as the sleepsuits keep going from baggy to tight quite rapidly!

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 17:55

They don't recommend you weigh them more often than once a month anyway, so don't worry! You'd know if there was a problem, I think people focus on weight too much but it is fun so follow their weight going up Xmas Grin

bananastew · 06/12/2010 18:09

Seriously, you lot need to slow down1 I log on am & pm & still can't keep up!

Nicknames! My poor children! Toby is Tobyjug/juggy or tobylerone and poor olly is olly bolly dob dob or olly dob a lob.

I'm in Lincoln! I could never meet up with you all, The piss I took out of my friend when she met her invisable mn friends, I'd never live it down! Xmas Grin

Not sure who asked about formula but Ollys on Cow & gate stage 1. He takes 4-5oz every 4 hours. Ds1 only took 2-3oz but was fine. I worried like mad at the time! Whoever asked about the infacol, just stop it & see what happens.

I actually got out in the car today. Only to get stuck & hyave to wait 30mins for dh who was at work to come and dig us out!!! don't think I'll try that again for a few days!

Oh and why are you all on here chatting when I'm not & not when I am!!! Is it a conspiracy?! Xmas Wink

Olly 14 weeks Xmas Shock

Dixiebell · 06/12/2010 18:36

Chatty people! Wondered how long your LOs go before they get sleepy in daytime? Arlo sleeps well at night - we usually get about 6 hours sleep, sometimes more. Then in the day he'll go for maybe an hour or two before he gets grumpy and needs a sleep again. Sometimes that sleep will last 3 or 4 hours. Or sometimes he wakes, feeds, then goes straight back to sleep. We don't have a set routine and some days he sleeps much less, and is very active and alert when he is awake, but just wondered how that compares?

bananastew · 06/12/2010 18:48

Ollys rough routine is below and he feeds in the wake times and a dream feed at 2200

0600 wakes up
0800 back to bed
1030-11 wakes up
1230-1300 back to bed
1500 wakes up
1630 sleep
1700 wakes up
1830 bedtime

Thats if we're at home. If we're out and about, he still sleeps at those times but not for as long.

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 19:23

Dixie Jack barely sleeps some day times. He has a feed around 7-8am but can then be awake then until noon and he'll sleep for around an hour then might nap for 30mins at around 5pm and is awake until bed time at 8-9pm.
Having said that, we do get some very sleepy days but he never sleeps more than 2 hours in one go during the day. Probably due to his grazing. Usually sleeps more on Monday and Tuesdays which I put down to buy weekends.
banana Tobylerone made us all laugh a lot! Xmas Grin

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 19:24

busy weekends!

beaditAli · 06/12/2010 19:38

CINNAMON oh what to do.... our greyhound rescue centre have a litter of puppies! Xmas Confused don't know if I could cope with a pup and a Jack! Xmas Smile

bananastew · 06/12/2010 19:46

Back on nicknames, my step fil called olly shitface today Xmas Shock he can be really foul sometimes & is always swearing in front of ds1 & says horrible things to him, he'll tell him he's naughty when he's not done anything at all! He absolutely adores them both but is just so inappropriate sometimes!

cinnamongreyhound · 06/12/2010 20:24

I'd never have a puppy, without or without a baby beaditAli!!! Kittens are hard enough work and puppys are much worse! My doggy was 4 when I got her and she loves me sooo much, whereas my cats I got at 18 months are nowhere near as friendly as my kitten. You definitely sound like a lady that needs a greyhound though Xmas Wink.

Wow that's much more of a routine than we have bananastew Luke always sleeps 8.30 and 3 because I put him in the sling to go to school but some days he will stay asleep until 11.30 and others he wakes up as soon as we are home. Depending how long he sleeps in the morning he may sleep 1 or 3 hours in the afternoon. He then usually sleeps at 5.30 but some evenings he says asleep then until 12/1am after that other times he'll only have 30-1hr then. He's never in be later than 8 for the last 4 weeks probably. He eats between every 1 1/2 and 5hrs during the day, depends so much on what we do! And he has gone 8 hrs at night several times but 6 is more usual.
