Could've been off his face on drugs or mentally deranged.

Both of those things could stop a person worrying about the consequences.

or she recognised him? With a 24-hour head start, he could be out of the country, or being protected by his "community".

Her body is barely cold and you think it's going to be one of those cases that never gets solved?

Why do you think this at such an early stage?

Another poster said that it might be like Jill Dando case
Another said why, how?
I suggested that it might be because it never gets solved
Just an opinion; yours is that it will be solved
i hope justice is served for Ann

I understand that there was CCTV on the property
If so, I wonder if the police will post a photo of the person they think murdered Ann.

I suspect if they had a clear enough photo, they wouldn't have arrested the wrong man.

GLOBALBEES · Yesterday 13:37

I very much doubt this was a burglary. Burglers stalk out houses over a sometimes lengthy period.
Recently, in the fairly affluent village I grew up in, there were many reports on Facebook of seeing men ,often early morning or about tea time, driving around the village and also parked in either end of tge main road that runs through it. The police of course were not interested. A few weeks later there were about 20 break ins in about 3 weeks, mostly vehicles including tractors, horse boxes and plant machinery.
A serious burgler would have watched fot Ann's comings and goings. A car moving off the drive foe example. I doubt she was the sort of person to have expensive jewelry or priceless antiques.
I think it was a personal attack by someone with a very twisted mind.

It's time to allow women and older people to carry pepper spray.

If it’s in this country there’s nothing stopping a man carrying it and using it to disable a woman.

I used to carry a small can of spray deodorant back in the 1970s when I had to walk up a dark alley to get home to my parents' place, so you're not alone!

I carry deep heat spray

Blinky21 · Yesterday 13:38

I had contact with her through work many years ago and found her to be nice enough. That said, she was spreading deeply divisive views in the years before she died for profit. I find it concerning the media is presenting her views as her having "strong principles" when in reality they were discriminatory.

Why the hell did they announce they had got someone then release on no charge
he will be always thought of as suspicious and avoided

His name hasnt been made public. It could be that he was in the vicinity and matched the description given by a witness, or seen on CCTV

I agree, I just don't think it'd have helped here sadly people aren't going to carry it around at home. Plus the elderly are naturally slower I don't know how much it'd help, younger women in public however I think it would. I really hope they catch this person it's awful an elderly woman no threat to anyone killed in her own home

What do you mean by his 'community'??

The police always arrest someone early doors. Then let them go, it might be a ploy to trick the true culprit into betraying himself.

1dayatatime · Yesterday 13:42

no one will know the motive until the person is caught and the best hope of that is forensics.

If I was to guess I would say it's either someone with a personal or political grudge.

Burglary as a crime is now less common (it's easier, safer and more lucrative to mug someone).

Haytor is really in the middle of Dartmoor and is very low crime.

And isn't burglary at midday unusual?

Well the younger women would have to be really confident the assailant isn't going to grab it from them and use it against them.

And confident they're not going to get sued by innocent members of the public, whose eyes and airways may be affected by it.

Good points, actually. I was assuming a level of self-awareness that he very well may not have had.

JSMill · Yesterday 13:46

Surely being murdered by a burglar is a very rare occurrence . What are the chances this happens to a lady who was well known and had very controversial opinions?

ofcolitas · Yesterday 13:46

It's time to allow women and older people to carry pepper spray.

The problem with this is that someone stronger than me can easily take that away from me. The only self defence that's really effective for women against men is guns, and thats not likely to happen lol.

Or was the person on CCTV but had a legitimate purpose to be there and/or was the wrong timeframe.

Back in the day, these were the sought of murders that were punished with the death penalty. Murder in the pursuit of robbery. The idea being that death by hanging would deter the robber from killing his victim.

I find it concerning the media is presenting her views as her having "strong principles" when in reality they were discriminatory.

But they were only views.

She was hardly Thatcher who's decisions affected the lives of millions and still do.

If someone was going to kill someone for the same views, they'd go to Farage.

Anyway as said above, I disagreed wholly with her views. Tiny or not she was a powerhouse and that's why I believe it ended in her murder. She was always going to confront and stand up for herself.

Just my thoughts.

If your already being confronted by someone stronger and potentially armed themselves, I'd take my chances, it at least gives them a chance to get away potentially. Better to be sued than physically harmed or dead to be honest, however I can't see someone successfully being sued for using a last resort with no alternative

Thanks for the education 🙄

Exactly, and what about disabled or vulnerable people under 65? What about young women or any woman who is assaulted/attacked?
Sorry that was the poster/s discussing that topic.
