Suspicious death, suspected murder. Think there is a press conference soon.

A long time ago when I was a baby reporter I interviewed Ann Widecombe. She was Prisons Minister at the time, but it wasn't the story about pregnant prisoners being shackled. The only thing I remember about the job was that she was unfailingly courteous to me.

There are a lot of people to the left being gleeful, but that always seems to be the case. It very rarely happens the other way round, so I guess it tells us all we need to know about the morals of some people. If you don’t agree with her opinions or politics, then no need to say anything following her death if you’re not going to be respectful. Just keep schtum, surely….

What about this?

Grenfell Tower: Man admits posting grossly offensive model video

The clip of a model Grenfell Tower burning on a bonfire was made at a party a year after the disaster.

I didn't agree with her views or politics but did admire her

She was amazing when she took on mick (my phone just tried to change that to sick-its right) philpot (who killed 6 of his dc in a house fire)

He went to hit her (or she thought he was going to slap her) and she didn't finch, she stood up to the sick bastard (who was used to people cowering from him)

She was also in a programme about the workhouse (I caught it on youtube) and she was a force of nature on it

I admired her personality, how she stood by what she believed and how she came across as a woman

Rest in peace Anne, the world won't be the same without you

Anyone laughing or gloating about her death,I hope they reserve a place in hell for you and I hope it's hotter than you imagine

Hear hear 👏

Its not terrorism and probably not political. So most likely a robbery gone wrong. Maybe Ann cancelled an appointment due to the heat and the robber wasn't expecting her to be in and panicked.
Some scumbag targeting a well-off vulnerable older lady.

Or someone with a mental illness. A few years ago in Northern Ireland, a guy who had just been released from some facility walked into an elderly couple's home in the middle of the day and killed them both. (I read the other day that he's due to be released from prison which is a horrific thought.) I'm sure Anne was very security-conscious given her position, but equally these are long summer evenings and she may have left a door open to the garden etc. Horrible thought for anyone with elderly parents, that they can't let their guard down for a minute.

Are there? Gleeful? A lot? I've not seen any.

It's awful that this has happened to Ann.

I hope no one tries to make political gains from her death. And that Farage doesn't use it to deflect from his £5 million "security" payment.

A handful of people on social media and suddenly the left are all awful people, as if people on the right are never arseholes. Plenty of obnoxious right wingers online.

And let's not forget we had a Conservative Prime Minister egging this sort of behaviour on - I'll never forget Boris Johnson being begged to tone down his rhetoric about Brexit in the light of death threats to MPs using his wording, he doubled down and dismissed concerns - and this was only a few years after the murder of Jo Cox.

Livelovebehappy · 10/07/2026 21:31

🤷‍♀️ I don’t agree. It’s definitely more prevalent on the left…..not saying it never happens the other way round, but less likely to.

I agree. Heather or whatever his name is. Various other twitter comments.

Evisam · 10/07/2026 21:44

Very sad news. She was certainly a character. My brother had to show her round a prison when she was prisons minister and said she was very courteous.

Never did any of us think that Jess Philips would be reading out her name in Parliament for all the wrong reasons. Another woman killed by a man.

Northernlassie123 · 10/07/2026 21:46

That poor lady to die like that no matter what her politics were. She must have been so frightened Just awful.

He will probably be put on a VP wing due to the current trend of prisoners trying to kill well-known prisoners.

I think I read somewhere that Ian Huntley was on the VP wing at HMP Frankland - that obviously didn't help him, his killer was also on the same wing.

I also read recently that the Sikh guy who killed Henry Nowak is also now at HMP Frankland and is refusing to move from segregation to the VP wing where Ian Huntley was killed.

Namechange4445 · 10/07/2026 21:49

I haven't RTFT, but regardless of some of her perhaps more extreme conservative views, she was a brilliant local MP and did so much for the community.

There's an overwhelming number of positive stories on the local news FB page, including from a lady who she'd supported and helped find somewhere to live after escaping DV. Apparently she kept in touch afterwards.

She came to our girls' grammar school in the 90s and gave an amazing, inspirational talk. I thought she was a great politician, very honest, diplomatic and measured.

friedaklein · 10/07/2026 21:51

Shocking. Poor lady.
So very fed up of reading about male violence against women.

I know, that came to my mind too.

Unbelievably shocking.

Wow. I can't say I was sorry to hear she'd died but I'd assumed it was natural causes. I hope that's the case.

How long have you been hoping for her death then.

Great comment. I also disagreed with all her politics but couldn't help but admire her. For all the reasons you give and more. What a woman. God she must've been terrified. I feel sick.

💯 this

LivelyGreyShark · 10/07/2026 21:58

The intro to her autobiography says 'one of the pleasures of retirement is that you never know what might happen next' - what an awful end - whether you agree with her politics or not she was a female minister at a time when women made up only around 9–10% of MPs in the House of Commons, that's quite a brilliant achievement.

What a load of ai produced b*llocks. This adds nothing to the conversation.

GallopingConsumption · 10/07/2026 22:01

I wrote to her when I was a teenager about society's views on certain health issues and got a very kind and personalised response. It sounded like Ann so I don't think it was just some assistant who wrote back!

There are main prisoners on VP wings and I guess even other sex offenders want money, fame etc too.

I guess segregation is the only place where they’re truly safe from other prisoners.

They shouldn’t get a choice.
Segregation is meant to be a punishment imposed on them.

Yes, that must be it. It's the most logical and obvious conclusion 🙄

"He is now in custody, being questioned on suspicion of murder. Just suspicion."

According to The Times earlier today, the man "has been arrested on suspicion of murder"

In the UK, police arrest people on the suspicion that they have committed an offence.

It is not the police, nor the CPS, who decide that a person is guilty of a crime. It is either a magistrate, judge or jury that decides this.

Everyone who is arrested by the police (unless there is a warrant out for their arrest) is arrested on suspicion of having committed an offence - unless the offence was actually observed taking place.

If I may point you to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, Section 24(2)

24(2) If a constable has reasonable grounds for suspecting that an offence has been committed, he may arrest without a warrant anyone whom he has reasonable grounds to suspect of being guilty of it.

The language of the law is all about "suspicion". It is only when a court gives its verdict (ie guilty or not guilty), or a person admits the offence, that a person is then convicted of that crime.

Up until then, everyone is indeed innocent until proved guilty.

But to try and say that the police have arrested him "on suspicion" and so that means nothing doesn't really fly.

Yes, he may indeed be entirely innocent. They may have the wrong person; it may not be murder but it may be manslaughter etc.

But I would suggest that it would be rather unusual for the police to arrest somebody for murder when there is not evidence to suggest that a murder has taken place.

No they are not “innocent until proven guilty”. They are PRESUMED innocent until proven guilty. You can’t be innocent until proven guilty. You’re either guilty or innocent all along.

I didn’t like her views at all, but I defend her right to say them. She chose to be single and received misogyny for her looks, appearance and her biological sex.
BBC reports say he was found covered in blood with a serious head injury it says by her carer - but that sound like someone who went in - in the morning or something I’m not sure if she lived completely alone or not. Either way she was nearly 80 and didn’t deserve to die like that and not one should be rejoicing over a murder.

The fact that the daily fail refers to the suspect arrested as ‘white’ seems however disjointed would they do that for a ‘black’ suspect? Eg write a black man has been arrested. Why not say a man in his 20s has been arrested or whatever. Why bring race or colour into it. The fact that anyone is saying anything gleeful about a murder online or in interviews speaks buckets about them and is highly disappointing and just awful really.

I don’t like all this rounding on social media for crimes pulling immediately out a racially profile card. The colour of your skin should NOT make you more or less likely to be a suspect or criminal.

I really agree with your post.
Very sadly, why happens irl doesn’t match up with your last paragraph.
