Change law to kick out Rochdale rapist, No 10 urged

Reported in The Telegraph that Labour is facing mounting pressure to change immigration laws immediately so that a child rapist freed from jail can be deported.

Shabir Ahmed, 73, was sentenced to more than 20 years in jail after being convicted of 30 child rape offences as part of the Rochdale grooming gang.

But on Thursday, the Pakistan-born rapist was released after serving 14 years.

Britain stripped him of his citizenship, but cannot currently deport him because of protections granted to Commonwealth immigrants such as Ahmed under the Immigration Act 1971.

On Thursday, Downing Street said the Prime Minister had asked Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, to “consider what can be done” to deport Ahmed, describing his case as “particularly heinous”.

It comes after Andy Burnham, expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister, also vowed to “review all options” to deport the "vile criminal".

The amendment to Ms Mahmood’s immigration bill will propose rewriting the 1971 act to permit the removal of serious criminals such as Ahmed.

However, even if an amendment were to pass, two senior Pakistani government officials told The Telegraph that the country would not accept Ahmed back because he renounced his Pakistani citizenship “several decades ago”.

They added that he posed a danger to Pakistani children.

If their claim is correct, it places Ahmed in the same situation as two other freed Pakistani ringleaders of the Rochdale grooming gang whom Pakistan has refused to take back.

Heartbreaking story. So much harm done by these evil men.

We more or less agree @strawberrybubblegum .

The only difference (for me) is our, as in British, responsibility.

While I don't think our culture is entirely responsible for him, it is partly responsible for eat has gone on.

When he came here our newspapers ran daily photos of topless girls. That only stopped in 2005. Rape in marriage became illegal in 1991. Police services are, at the very least, sexist. The legal system? It is shockingly hard to get convictions for sexual assault. I mean, we talk about Sharia law requiring 5 male witnesses? Well I posit that our system is not much better, it just wears different clothes.

That man knew that he would/could get away with what he was doing as long as he chose carefully.

He knew that his word, as a man, and as a Pakistani, would be taken over theirs - young and poor.

It's s strange bit of black-and-white thinking that our anti-Western education seems to encourage: that because our culture has problems, it is "not much better" than other cultures.

That is absolutely incorrect.

Our culture is a world apart in the treatment of women. Far from perfect, but so much better than many other countries.

Better laws. Much better institutions. Much, much better cultural expectations and practice.

Far from perfect: but much better.

Again, the cultural heritage of the grooming gangs in no way matches the whole population who grew up in our culture. It's not our culture which caused this.

Agreed. This is what the progressive left has come to. Constantly attacking and undermining British culture while promoting other cultures and minimising any negative aspects of other cultures.

I've met so many people like this. I used to be left wing and I've worked in the public and charity sectors. This mindset is rife. It's often well-meaning, but it actually does so much harm.

5MinuteArgument · 23/07/2026 08:52

It concerns me that Lucy Powell, minimiser-in-chief with regards to the grooming gangs, has been made minister of education.

I hope she isn't representative of the new Labour govt. The left of the party seems to be in the ascendancy. I don't trust them at all.

I said upthread that grooming is the flip side of honour violence.

This is what happens if you get too friendly with a "good girl" deemed worth defending by the BRUVVERS

Awful case. These are young Muslim men, presumably born in Britain, who are enacting alien cultural practices (torturing someone who dates their sister).

I think we need to stop issuing visas and granting asylum to people from Muslim countries. I'm not anti-Muslim but this sort of thuggery and extremism is too risky to bring any more of it into our country as it seems to take hold in certain areas making it harder for people to integrate.

5MinuteArgument · 26/07/2026 12:16

The rapid expansion of this community already in the UK is not something we can do anything about.

But those in authority need to wake up. At the moment they are appeasing and pandering to the most thuggish and extremist elements of the Muslim community which is bad news for everyone.

The left are too busy worrying about Reform, who they insist are our biggest threat. The destraction tactics are working.

ETA - you only have to look at this thread to see the usual low numbers interested in this serious topic.

Yes, it's only when something like a terrorist attack happens that people start asking questions. Like in Germany now with the attack on Berlin Pride. And then Reform get demonised because they dare to address these issues.

Oh that's already been brought up on another thread!

Lalgarh · 27/07/2026 00:37

I was looking to see what the condemnation of the attack on pride would be from Owen Jones, Zack Polanski and assorted left influencers.

Nothing from either of them so far at midnight even though they've been tweeting all day.

Reddit has dealt with this incident that doesn't fit their narrative (it's the white supremacist Christian nationalists who also fund transphobic women's groups that are the enemy. Anything else is a dog whistle) by taking issue with Wes Streeting condemning the attack, because obviously Labour and him are a far bigger threat to LGBTQ people than any jihadists, right?

Shocking. Why wouldn’t Wes Streeting condemn the attack… any normal person would.

Honestly, someone has said on a thread about a Jihadist who has driven a van into a parade, killed one person and stabbed a load of other ' West Streeting is the hate'?!

Lalgarh · 27/07/2026 07:47

Forced teaming.

They're not quite sure how to relate to whatever new group but they know for sure they don't want to be associated with that person who also opposed this issue or group, so they apply "my enemy's enemy is my friend".

I won't derail the thread but it is what fed into the wilful blindness across an entire class of professionals to what was then being called "child prostitution". And what produced the mute response from people who'd be The First to lecture anyone else on things like childcare in a professional capacity

Child prostitution? That makes me sick.

How do they reconcile that with what they know about underage sex being statutory rape. And this was not two youngsters going too far!

Still … at least he has condemned the attack.

The problem with appeasement as a strategy is that you then get criticised for not going far enough. So Labour trying to keep the Muslim vote happy hasn’t worked.

It certainly hasn't. No matter what Labour do in that area, it won't ever be enough.
