Would you vote for Angela Rayner?

Sounds like she's throwing her hat in the ring.

She says she's paid off the tax she owes and is no longer under investigation.

This apparently means she's free to run - and is going to.

I'm not in her constitutency nor a Labour party member so I won't get the opportiunity.
I like AR and would consider voting for Labour if led by her.

ihearyoucalling · 14/05/2026 07:32

I think Wes Streeting is potentially more popular with the public, as he's less known and therefore less tainted. I was thinking he's the best of a bad bunch but I've read a few things now which makes me reassess that.

She would be a terrible choice as she is so unpopular in the general population. The only name currently on the table who is liked (or at least not disliked) by average people in the country is Andy Burnham. Unfortunately he can't currently stand.

In football, when a team is struggling, the fans always demand that a player they've only seen a couple of times, who's not in the team, plays. Almost always, when he does play, he turns out not to be any better than the other players.

Can't help thinking that's where we are with Burnham.

Rayner as PM feels like the script to a sketch on Little Britain.

Could you link where you’ve got the stats to this from?! To speak for the general population is grasping a bit.

Im not challenging your right to an opinion, just asking for the rest of the population (I.e me and other MNers) speak for ourselves.

Ok, that was bad wording and I have no stats! Just the random collection of people I know who react badly to the suggestion of Angela and are more positive to Burnham. These people aren't the supporters of any particular party.

musicalfrog · 14/05/2026 07:33

Haha, Kemi would absolutely wipe the floor with her so it could be worth it for that.

Streeting is my preference.

Yes, a couple of his past tweets have resurfaced recently, quite shocking so that quite nice demeanour is probably put on for the camera.

Self-ID was a crack pot idea firmly rejected by the electorate. Conversion therapy was in the Kings Speech yesterday.

You got there before me!

Snapespeare · 14/05/2026 07:35

Absolutely yes. She'd run through the Farage 'man of the people' nonsense like a dose of salts.
There's always something about looking down our noses about working class women who make something of themselves isn't there? Calling her thick, uneducated, inarticulate. Snobbery about teenage pregnancy. Grifter because she's defied the odds.
She's got a far better standing in the parliamentary labour party than Streeting. I hope she puts her hat in the ring.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/05/2026 07:36

I think with Streeting there might be things that come out about him - I don’t think he’s a good choice. Burnham will be tainted by giving up Manchester to chase the big job.

You are absolutely right but the snobbery etc is not going to go away, sadly, which would IMO give her precious little chance of leading a future Labour GE victory.

Carouseloflife · 14/05/2026 07:38

It’s irrelevant who leads the party as the media would crucify any Labour leader.

MushMonster · 14/05/2026 07:38

I need to hear what all candidates have to say. Which differences are there between them.

Grumpyeeyore · 14/05/2026 07:38

She’s very popular within the party. A big personality / approachable in a way Starmer isn’t and the unions would presumably vote for her. I think the tax thing showed carelessness and would make me question her competence to run an economy.
With any of them I would prefer a period when they were tested via hustings / tv interviews etc because there is no point swapping without knowing what we would be getting instead. I’ve never really heard her speak about the economy or foreign policy.
But the right wing media would be out to destroy her even more so than Starmer so we would probably end up with Farage.

This in spades.

Like what?

Sesma · 14/05/2026 07:39

I would laugh if about 5 of them stood and Starmer won.

IDontHateRainbows · 14/05/2026 06:43

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes. No way.

This x 100000

dazzlingdeborahrose · 14/05/2026 07:42

Nope. She has no credibility to lecture anybody on paying their taxes. At the moment Labour are playing right into Reform’s hands. Destabilising themselves instead of working together for the good of the country snd the electorate. Farage must be rubbing his hands with glee.

Nanda66 · 14/05/2026 07:43

I already have a tentative plan to move abroad. If she was in charge I’d give up work and take my pension early and leave.
However my local Labour MP, a new MP at the last GE is doing a great job. The party need more like him, not grifters like Rayner.

ruffler45 · 14/05/2026 07:43

She would get eaten alive and be a national embarassment. She does not have a qualification to her name yet thinks she can operate on the national and international arenas. Best she sticks to Ashton

A General election would be the best option

anyolddinosaur · 14/05/2026 07:44

No. I think Andy Burnham is perceived to have done a decent job with Manchester. Wes Streeting has stopped the NHS damaging children. Angela is not up to the job and doesnt has the sense to avoid scandal over her financial affairs.

I think Wes is going to try and avoid going up against Burnham but they shouldnt be having a leadership contest now.

IoannahJo · 14/05/2026 07:45

Also I know it’s not our system but I have always thought that changing PM mid term except for, say, unavoidable reasons like health, should trigger a general election. Especially if it starts to be a contest of new ideas and policy.

It’s bad enough that this government brings in stuff that wasn’t even mentioned during the GE campaign (which of course they are allowed to do), but whole scale change of the party is not what people voted for. We know what happens with do called unelected PMs.

I think it is particularly unfair to those who potentially held their noses to vote for Labour with Starmer at the helm.

Labour needs wide ranging votes. I fear that a leader change especially to someone who divides opinion so much would destroy any future GE Labour majority for a very long time.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 14/05/2026 07:45

No, she would lose them an election - it’ll be like Corbyn all over again “she lost them on the doorstep”

MushMonster · 14/05/2026 07:46

I am hoping for someone who can combine left values with savvy economy and diplomatic strength is a must, with what is raining internationally (think of Carney stand, a type of no means no, Mr Trump). I think both Rayner and Streeting can be so.
As I am a leftie, I would like to see someone who can see opportunity in the challenges ahead. Why not creating wealth with our own software companies, defence companies, technology companies, electric vehicles, have a thorough thought about the hydrogen vehicle market, because it still poses quite a few advantages over electrics...
Where there is a problem, there is a solution and said solution could save our economy.
