Labour MPs are already mobilising against Starmer

Before the first results came in, some senior Labour MPs are briefing that Starmer has got to go.

Ed Milliband seems more than happy to have his name out there as being at the forefront of any coup.

Looks like Ed Milliband is goading Starmer to sack him. If he is sacked then he immediately becomes a frontrunner to replace him. If he isn't, then Starmer looks too weak to carry on as PM.

Keir Starmer urged to plan resignation to avert Labour war

Ed Miliband, keen to avoid internal conflict should dire election results trigger leadership challenges, is understood to have had private words

I’m sick of Labour MPs. Which part of the chaotic Tory government did they think the public were happy about? Why do they think any other leader will do better when the media are firmly against the Labour Party. Andy Burnham won’t appeal to the whole of the country and Labour cannot definitely assume they’ll keep London now.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/05/2026 09:43

Crescendo means a growing noise @MelanzaneParmigiana. There’s no indication that it’s growing at all. It’s the same 20!!! There’s no group of rebels openly growing in number at all! They might be hiding in plain sight of course but they are not openly mobilizing behind candidates. They are probably waiting - but a coup against a labour pm is very difficult and there’s no obvious new leader. But at the moment they are either sitting on their hands or moaning privately. Catherine West is an outlier.

Boomer55 · 10/05/2026 10:13

Catherine West has threatened to bring forward a challenge next week. Others want to wait until they can get Burnham back to Westminster.

Either way, it looks like the MPs want Starmer gone.

That depends, doesn’t it? West is going to look very foolish tomorrow morning if she hasn’t got the necessary numbers and the rest of the party politely ignores her.

cricketnut77 · 10/05/2026 10:29

What does it matter if Starmer goes or stays?

His successor won’t know how to grow the economy
Won’t cut state spending
Won’t stop the boats
Won’t offend its Muslim client group
Won’t stand up for working people against “progressive” crap.
Labour is the problem.

TheKittenswithMittens · 10/05/2026 10:33

Sadly, the country want Labour gone.

Do they? What grounds do you have for saying that?

I'm sure she's aware that that's a possibility, at least she isn't rendered inert through cowardice.

Support for Labour is around 20 per cent, so that's 80 per cent who want some other party running the country.

Absolutely agree. Labour set for another landslide. They are doing amazingly.

Yep. She’ll be fine. It’s kick started others asking for a timetable and will at least get them to face the problem.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/05/2026 11:56

@cricketnut77 How are Reform faring in mixed race communities? Some Muslims want the ladder pulled up!

Riapia · 10/05/2026 12:13

Labour was formed to represent the working classes.
The mines have gone, steel works gone, mills gone and car plants gone. The Labour Party’s sole purpose now is to the unemployed.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 10/05/2026 15:45

Josh Simons has published an op ed in the Sunday Times asking Starmer to step down.

I saw something saying that Catherine West now has 40 odd MPs behind her, which is of course not enough to make the threshold, but might give a Cabinet Member an opening to move if they want to.

I personally still think it will blow over but continue to embarrass the govt.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 10/05/2026 15:46

(^^ in case unclear, Simons is a Labour MP)

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/05/2026 21:02

@Riapia Yes and it’s a big problem and it’s not got a policy to drive productivity and employment. It’s pushed around by back benchers who only represent those not employed it seems. It’s not good enough.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/05/2026 21:12

@JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff What threshold? Not sure the Labour Party has a published number for revolting MPs to trigger anything. Blair was persuaded to go. Starmer will be persuaded to come up with an exit strategy but of course instability makes Labour look like the Tories. Getting rid of the PM is never a good look and there’s no great successor lined up! One isn’t even an mp. Who might not find a safe seat when he wants one either!

PropertyD · 10/05/2026 21:13

I believe that this coup won’t happen. The MP’s will want Burnham in. Rayner is too toxic and what the hell is taking so long to investigate?

Let’s hope Burnham gets a very very safe seat and doesn’t lose!

Reform will put everything behind fighting him.

Still poor Labour having the same old same old issues.

Labour need to hang their heads in shame re the mess they have caused.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/05/2026 21:30

@PropertyD and what would the coup look like? It’s never been done except for persuading Blair to go. Even 40 backbenchers is 10% of the PLP. It’s nothing. Obviously the cabinet are keeping their tinder dry. I think the party conference might see a strategy emerge but - who? None are palatable !

There's reports tonight that Clive Lewis is about to resign as an MP.

One problem though - it was a safe Labour seat (in Norfolk), but both the Greens and Reform have seen a rise in support there and it is not a safe seat anymore.

What the Labour party want is very different from what (former) Labour voters want. The Labour party is starting to exist for its own sake.

BIossomtoes · 07/05/2026 23:09

Oh God, not you again. 🙄

Come again?

ShakyBake · 10/05/2026 21:47

I am genuinely amazed and aghast at Ed Miliband not only still in office but now mentioned as a possible front runner as leader?? What on earth? The guy comes across as a complete drip and nasal wet weekend. There's not an ounce of leadership in the man. C'mon this is ridiculous.

What's with the fascination of bringing these clinger-ons back from 20 years ago? I reckon the power trip must go to their heads and they can't cope without it
