Are Scottish people worried about immigration in the same way that English people are?

Everyday, day time TV shows are filled with topics of immigrants but in my day to day life (living in Scotland) I don't notice immigrants, I don't feel they are stealing jobs or living off benefits any more than any other group in society. Perhaps it's just where I live but I'm interested, are Scottish people as concerned by immigration as they are down south?

There probably is a small link, but common sense would dictate that housing the equivalent of a medium size UK city every 5 years would have a larger impact.

It's far worse than that.

700,000 came last year.

Manchester for example is about 550,000 people.

half of Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal
I live in an area with a high Muslim population and many of my friends and colleagues are Muslim. That cannot possibly be true! Some of my Muslim friends are very outspoken about LGBT rights and of course there are many gay Muslims.

It’s actually scary how much ignorance there is about the actual nature of Muslim beliefs. I know gay Muslims that have been threatened with death by their own families if they don’t squash their sexuality and keep it secret. Death threats. By their families.

There’s 84 Sharia courts in the UK, some people are in hiding due to ‘insulting the prophet’, mobs have formed outside school to stop them teaching tolerance for LGBT people, there are surges in the numbers of disabled people in certain areas due to family marriage, in fact family marriage was being defended in Parliament not long ago, half of Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal, we have a pretty widely established issue with grooming gangs, there have been multiple rapes and sexual assaults in the last couple of months alone by men arriving in small boats; and not only do you see no issue with any of this, those who do are nasty and right wing? Have I got that right?

No. I just don't think all immigrants are bad in the same way that I don't think all immigrants are good. Same for most people but it doesn't concern me that the name Muhammed is the number 1 name in Britain for a boy.

Id be much more concerned about criminal records of these people or values.

Out of curiosity, are you pleased that the morals and values of the west have been put in other countries or do you feel mixing in general is not a good idea?

I'm sure that Muhammed is the most popular name because 1. All spellings of it are added together and 2. The culture that uses Muhammed names many boys the same first same and differentiating more, perhaps, with a middle name.

Whereas other cultures love choosing different first names and specifically don't want a name that will be common in the classroom.

It's really not a relevant statistic.

Or Glasgow. There’s certainly no shortage in Glasgow and they aren’t all Eastern European. Even in my small county just outside of Glasgow there’s been a considerable influx of people from (mainly) Nigeria but also some other African countries, many of whom are carers. If I may generalise They mostly seem to work hard and are pleasant and polite with generally well behaved children.

This 100%. My elderly mother has carers and 99% are all immigrants from Africa!

Why would we worry about any of that though? We have chosen to elect a government that we know, if they had the power, would actually create safe routes instead of forcing people into perilous journeys. As a general population we know we need migration, and we need it now.

Muhammad is actually the second most popular boys name in Scotland and I can't think of anything I'm worrying about less.

Perhaps we should be electing a government that will stop them coming at all rather than rolling out the red carpet.

So why wasn’t it the most popular name in, for example, 1990?

There are no criminal records because many of those Islamic countries will not be arresting men for sexual assaults or rapes. How can you be so naive? You really think the Taliban is there earnestly keeping records of which men are marrying 12 year olds, or abusing their wives?

SwanFlight · 03/08/2025 21:21

You need to breakdown the migration figures, things have swung since Brexit, lots of Chinese, Indian, Asians and Africans working and studying here. And incentives for people to come and work, as many sectors are depleted of workers following Brexit. You can't have your cake and eat it. It's two way traffic. Put up walls, and no one should be able to leave either. Cherry picking skills is not that egalitarian. As the UK is an island, it escapes much land bridge migration. Numbers have risen, and systems have broken down. As for intolerance, my white British family were incredibly intolerant about some issues when I was growing up. Some of their attitudes have since relaxed. Some topics are best swerved, because to be frank, when they start, I think I'm quite close to disowning them. My Mum straddles somewhere in between care free liberal and neo-nazi.

Theolittle · 03/08/2025 21:28

I live in England and don’t believe my life is negatively impacted by immigration. Don’t believe the right wing press and SM. They do not represent the majority of English people.

They didn’t reveal the immigration status of this evil individual either.

Huge trigger warning on this one, it’s incredibly upsetting; even where rape and murder is involved.

Dear god, that was grim - could only read the first few lines. Does it say how long he will serve?

paolo2145 · 26/08/2025 21:16

I do agree that we need to crackdown and be tougher on illegal immigration, that is a given.

However, vast number of immigrants to Scotland have made a positive contribution to Scotland. Indeed I often find they treat others and their own cities better than some locals sadly.

There is no doubt that the far right are trying to whip people I to to a frenzy over this, and trust me when I say if Farage becomes PM, their will be bloodshed.

Every single racist and fascist will think they have been given a green light to both physically and mentally attack anyone who doesn't meet their criteria of being white and British.

Farage is no friend of the poor or working class, like Trump he is a snake oil salesman.

Immigration doesn't really have any impact on my life to be honest so it's not a priority issue. I don't waste any energy on the issue.

I think anyone who goes to a country without the correct paperwork should be sent home, so for me it's as simple as that.

I'm more concerned about public spending, how we get the country ahead, the NHS, transport, global warming, our rivers and coastlines....those are the things that affect me

WeeWeegieChick · 20/10/2025 18:33

I

PurpleThistle7 · 20/10/2025 18:35

I am an immigrant and live in Edinburgh - with about a million other immigrants.

they’re talking about an asylum hotel a few blocks away from me and everyone is going crazy.

i haven’t heard or seen anything problematic until this though - but I live in a city that appears to be majority immigrants. Almost difficult to find Scottish people in some areas!

Movinginthesunlight · 28/10/2025 16:18

I live in Aberdeen and the vast majority of people that I talk to are very worried about immigration, this is across totally different demographics and circles. Aberdeen has changed beyond recognition the past couple of years and there is no sign of it stopping.

TabbyM · 28/10/2025 16:41

Yes Scotland has asylum seekers in hotels (now moved to ex student halls in Aberdeen), so far the anti fascists have outnumbered the fascists in local protests, long may it continue. Also a rash of massive unofficial saltires appearing - many blown off in recent storms luckily (councils removing slowly due to concerns for staff safety).

TabbyM · 28/10/2025 16:43

@Movinginthesunlight this is rubbish - the population in Aberdeen has decreased massively over the last few years due to the decline in the oil and gas industry. Loads of vacancies in the local NHS and care homes calling out for staff.

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 28/10/2025 16:45

We have had the people shouting at hotels and putting up multiple flags. The flags look quite jolly though (the hotel shouters not so much)
