Are Scottish people worried about immigration in the same way that English people are?

Grace040712 · 02/08/2025 14:35

Everyday, day time TV shows are filled with topics of immigrants but in my day to day life (living in Scotland) I don't notice immigrants, I don't feel they are stealing jobs or living off benefits any more than any other group in society. Perhaps it's just where I live but I'm interested, are Scottish people as concerned by immigration as they are down south?

Nonsense. I know of 3 within 3 miles of me in Aberdeenshire.

It’s been in the news quite a lot in Aberdeen if you care to look. Women followed while walking dogs by the beach ; one, that I know of, convicted rapist.

The Scottish government would like to think that we welcome everyone with open arms. But based on local news and anecdotes, we have issues with numbers of men not understanding cultural norms, as others do,

” not understanding cultural norms”? What does that mean exactly?

BoredZelda · 03/08/2025 11:14

Yep, they definitely are. Despite it being such a small number, people are believing the tabloid / Reform bullshit.

My town has a hotel with asylum seekers. Whenever anything happens locally and appears on FB (e.g has anyone seen my cat) there will be hundreds of posts saying to look at the xxx hotel, those guys will have stolen/eaten/assaulted it. There hasn’t been any trouble from this hotel, but that in itself is apparently a cover up, the police are lying.

It is depressing. People love to claim the Scots aren’t racist. It’s just not true.

Do you not think there’s a link between housing costs and 400 to 800k people arriving every year?

I think there is a link to housing costs with wealthy people buying up properties.

Cultural norms in Scotland are things like politeness, respect (including women), sense of humour, language etc.

There probably is a small link, but common sense would dictate that housing the equivalent of a medium size UK city every 5 years would have a larger impact.

Happy socialism in Europe?

Norway, very happy as the UK buys all their energy at massive mark ups. They have 5.5 mill....we have 65.5 mill population. They are not socialist...just rich.

Sweden has 50 people per sq km, we have 750.
We have 7 times the population. One reason they are happy...less people more space.

Sweden is not happy in urban areas. Sweden has the highest rape statistics in Europe.
Sweden had over 30 bombing this year.
Sweden has the highest ' crime index' in Europe.
Let's just say Sweden has changed.

Do you live in Sweden?

Do you know that 85% of Sweden is uninhabited?

Do you know that rape cases “increased” due to a change in the way they are reported?

Do you know the ethnicity of the perpetrators are not recorded so it is impossible to say this is an immigration issue, but that any known to be involved have been 2nd/3rd generation, and increasingly it has been linked to gangs/extortion with no immigration link?

RaraRachael · 03/08/2025 11:27

@Brendahollowayreconsider I'm in Moray so was getting the info second hand from my daughter who lives near Aberdeen.

I don't think there were thousands of protestors there but there were the usual comments like "Please advertise next time there's a protest so we can join in" etc

Ah. Yes. Sense of humour and aimiability. We took that for granted and now realise what wealth it brings. 💕

Navigatinglife100 · 03/08/2025 12:10

I'm.not at all concerned about immigrants and live in Cornwall. When people locally complain (and they do!) I question their source of information as its not what I am seeing with my own eyes. The majority of people here, of every creed and colour, are law abiding, working citizens.

We do have increasing issues with crime and.from my very limited knowledge (I.e facebook cctv images trying to locate/name them) the issues are mainly white and, quite possibly in many cases, requiring better mental health support.

People coming in boats can't afford houses that we can't afford. They come with nothing. Rich people can afford the houses and they push up the house prices but no I don't blame people coming over in boats for th house crisis. I blame private landlords, holiday home owners and in a way people who offer 50,000 over a house is worth just to secure it.

Where I live higher demand was caused by people buying second homes. And during COVID that went mental.

In my area there are very small, quaint, old fisherman cottages. A fair proportion were holiday lets when we moved in 30 years ago and by the time COVID came almost all were. Whilst it's a pity local people don't live in them they are the type and location of property that do lend themselves to holidays and that keeps the local economy thriving too. Not one has been bought by an immigrant.

During COVID the rest of the area became fair game for second home buyers. These are modern places and make lovely homes for families. They are now holiday lets and simply second homes for weekend breaks for wealthy individuals. Again, not one of these owners is an immigrant.

So, no, in my limited experience, here it's the countries wealth divide that has caused the housing crisis.

JamesMacGill · 03/08/2025 15:42

That’s because you have a population of 5 million versus England 57 million, no small boats as nowhere near the channel, and an abundance of natural space and cheaper housing etc

Isn’t it obvious?

JamesMacGill · 03/08/2025 15:51

Grace040712 · 02/08/2025 20:19

I would only worry about the safety of the people coming in the small boats - what a life they must be fleeing for that to be their only option 💔.

I am not sure why it would be of concern that the number 1 boys name is Muhammed.

There’s 84 Sharia courts in the UK, some people are in hiding due to ‘insulting the prophet’, mobs have formed outside school to stop them teaching tolerance for LGBT people, there are surges in the numbers of disabled people in certain areas due to family marriage, in fact family marriage was being defended in Parliament not long ago, half of Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal, we have a pretty widely established issue with grooming gangs, there have been multiple rapes and sexual assaults in the last couple of months alone by men arriving in small boats; and not only do you see no issue with any of this, those who do are nasty and right wing? Have I got that right?

The housing crisis is caused by supply not matching demand. Immigration has added 4.68 million people to the U.K. in the last 10 years, that’s the equivalent of 9 new cities housing the same population as Edinburgh. I’m not saying second homes don’t have some impact but it can’t be on that scale surely.

half of Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal
I live in an area with a high Muslim population and many of my friends and colleagues are Muslim. That cannot possibly be true! Some of my Muslim friends are very outspoken about LGBT rights and of course there are many gay Muslims.

It’s true and I’m genuinely surprised that you are surprised by this.

Half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, poll finds

Survey for Channel 4 documentary finds 23% want sharia law but most feel strong connection with Britain

I’m horrified! Thank you for sharing the link. I can honestly say I have never encountered this. Perhaps people keep their opinions to themselves but I’m thinking of a number of people who are either gay themselves or consider themselves allies and are also very proud Muslims. Blimey. I’d love to know more detail tbh - maybe it varies geographically or is a particular age group.

I went to a wedding recently and spent most of the night chatting with a youngish Muslim woman. She was lovely, as in truly lovely - chatted a lot about our kids, work, life in general. She added me on Facebook a few days later, which I accepted. Not long after that she posted a story to share a meme type picture saying women who don’t cover their heads will go to hell. You never know what people are thinking (and that goes for everyone and not just Muslims).

I think that you know a very niche group of Muslims. It is well known that Islam and its followers tend to be very conservative about homosexuality.

Homosexuality is punishable by death in several Sharia following countries. It’s beyond being conservative.

Oh yes. I know. Draconian might be a better term but death penalty or not Islam is hardly known for its support of Pride parades. I’m genuinely surprised that the poster is seemingly unaware of the general attitude towards homosexuality by your average Muslim in the UK let alone in Iran, Saudi Arabia or Yemen. Obviously there are exceptions like that poster’s friends.
