Are Scottish people worried about immigration in the same way that English people are?

Everyday, day time TV shows are filled with topics of immigrants but in my day to day life (living in Scotland) I don't notice immigrants, I don't feel they are stealing jobs or living off benefits any more than any other group in society. Perhaps it's just where I live but I'm interested, are Scottish people as concerned by immigration as they are down south?

No because there are hardly any immigrants in Scotland compared with rUK

scotland is 97% white so most people never come across immigrants and if they do they are from Eastern Europe.

we are just as capable of bigotry and racism in Scotland but we like to pretend we are not.

Nonsense. I know of 3 within 3 miles of me in Aberdeenshire.

It’s been in the news quite a lot in Aberdeen if you care to look. Women followed while walking dogs by the beach ; one, that I know of, convicted rapist.

The Scottish government would like to think that we welcome everyone with open arms. But based on local news and anecdotes, we have issues with numbers of men not understanding cultural norms, as others do,

Well clearly your experience is different to mine. I've had a "look" as you pointed out and there don't appear to be any migrant hotels in a 25 mile radius of where I live.

There is almost double the % of people born outside the UK live in England as Scotland, 16% as opposed to 9%, so there are considerably fewer immigrants in Scotland, and the general density of population in Scotland is much lower. It all makes a difference to people's attitudes and perceptions.

Or is this just another Scotland good England bad goady thread. I'm Scottish so I'm allowed to say that.

Well they’re not showing up on the shores of Scotland in small boats nor is the top name for boys in Scotland Muhammad so perhaps it’s that they don’t need to worry about it yet.

Why would we worry about any of that though? We have chosen to elect a government that we know, if they had the power, would actually create safe routes instead of forcing people into perilous journeys. As a general population we know we need migration, and we need it now.

Muhammad is actually the second most popular boys name in Scotland and I can't think of anything I'm worrying about less.

I don't think England is bad 😊.

Not that I'm aware of! I find the concept really confusing. It's ok the news a lot but always England- never here

There definitely is in my area of Scotland and they’ve been nothing but trouble

And that’s fine, but doesn’t make my comments untrue.

We do have fewer than many places in England, because we have lower population density, but that does not mean there are no issues.

That said, I do not advocate riots, protests or civil unrest as the answer.

usedtobeaylis · 02/08/2025 20:38

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 18:37

So no immigrant hotels in Scotland?

Yes there are. There is a hotel along the road from me that is used to house asylum seekers.

There was another not too far although the last I heard they were being moved. It was the target of some 'protests' that were happily a bit of a damp squib. The locals didn't seem too phased by the presence of asylum seekers on the hotel. People seemed more bothered about the treatment of the asylum seekers than anything else.

I may not entirely agree with you but your post is entirely rational and thought out.
What I find disturbing is certain sections of the media to whip up racial hatred and you've only to look at the comments section on one online newspaper that some are buying into that with some wild comments advocating all sorts of nonsense.

ShieldsStation · 02/08/2025 20:45

Lushvegetation · 02/08/2025 19:35

Hardly any immigrants in Scotland? Have you been in Edinburgh lately? What absolute nonsense.

Or Glasgow. There’s certainly no shortage in Glasgow and they aren’t all Eastern European. Even in my small county just outside of Glasgow there’s been a considerable influx of people from (mainly) Nigeria but also some other African countries, many of whom are carers. If I may generalise They mostly seem to work hard and are pleasant and polite with generally well behaved children.

ShieldsStation · 02/08/2025 20:47

And yes I know many people who are concerned about immigration. There are a lot of myths about asylum seekers and other immigrants but there are also some very real issues.

There are hotels in Glasgow, Perth and Aberdeen. Probably more.

Why do we need Immigrantion, of the variety put in hotels?
These guys are majority illiterate in their own countries, let alone having any skills or qualifications to bring to the UK.

These men are unknowns. Rapists, murderers, swindlers...terrorists, you have no idea who they are.

These are not doctors and nurses.

We all know that Immigrants like these men cost the UK millions over their life times.
And their children also cost millions.

SwanFlight · 02/08/2025 21:16

I come from one of the most multi-cultural towns in the UK, and lived in one of the most multi-cultural cities. Isn't it usually the case that the places with no mixing of outsiders - the local for local people type places - married to your cousin, whilst cheating with your brother are the kind of places people seem to get most wound up about immigration issues?

There is always a certain type of person portrayed in the news that's for sure!

@Grace040712 Honestly I find people like you as tedious and annoying as the people yelling ‘get them all out.’

We can all have empathy for other human beings, that does not mean however we can HOUSE them all! Wake up ffs. This is why people are voting reform because they are sick of the politically correct bullshit brigade.

NaicePeachJoker · 02/08/2025 21:25

Scotlands population density is 70 people per square Km compared to England’s 438. Scotland is 95.4% white British compared to England’s 81%. 40% of Londons population was born outside the U.K. compared to Edinburgh 22%.

The trend is clear though, give Scotland 5-10 years and ask this question again.

Fragmentedbrain · 02/08/2025 21:27

There are some serious problems with overcrowding and lack of provision for homelessness. Serious NHS capacity allocation. And there has been a significant uptick in sex offenders (guys who believe women don't really get a say/are asking for it by being out without a male escort and until coming here have never had this view challenged). If you work in criminal justice you know it's happening. But it's totally, totally socially unacceptable to complain about immigration in Scotland- if you did you'd be ostracised even more so than in English polite society.

Unsure how things will go - suspect like Ireland all smiley smiley refugees welcome until a critical number of people are personally affected.

Thank you for such a lovely message and summary of my character! I'm not sure where in this thread you decided that I'm "tedious" and "annoying" but thank you so much for sharing your opinion on "people like me" as well as your stance on immigration. I don't think I've said I want to house all immigrants, nor do I think anything I've said is particularly politically correct or incorrect. I was just looking to get people's opinions on the subject as living where I live, it's not something I have much experience with however it's clear to me watching the news that it's a cause of concern in other parts of the country.

Once again, thank you so much for your comments! It's always lovely to talk to such eloquently spoken people - even through a keyboard.

Bradford has the highest prevalence of first cousin marriage in the U.K. and has elected 4/5 pro immigration MPs.

@NaicePeachJoker I see what you did there, but that is kind of weird, because usually the immigrant community is the first to pull the ladder up.

Ha ha, couldn’t resist. I didn’t think that would fit the stereotype you had in mind when mentioning people married to their cousin.
