Let women wear whatever the hell they like, including a burka.

or do we think nuns’ habits should be banned? Or the modest clothing of other religious groups? Mormons? Orthodox Jews?

no because this is about Islamophobia.

This isn’t islamaphobia. Loads of Muslim women do not wear burkas or niqabs and the women who wear these are usually forced to. The burka isn’t a religious garment whereas a nun’s habit is. Also, you can still see a nun’s face so there aren’t any security issues.

Ban thong bikinis in public so I don't have to see someone's barely covered arsehole in public.

Also men in vests or, worse, topless. And fanny pelmets worn with boob tubes and platform sandals on Friday and Saturday night.

Which pillock asked this?

This one...
Sarah Pochin is a British Reform UK politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Runcorn and Helsby since May 2025. Apparently the question was asked in the 'interest of public safety'.

I'm all for public safety - but yet to feel threatened by a woman covering her face.

I have no time for Islamic fundamentalism and hate to see young female children in hijabs but don't see how banning face covering would make me safer, in reality.

Is there a problem with Burkas in Runcorn? Hmm

Favouritefruits · 04/06/2025 19:10

Each to their own, wear what you want! Who cares. I’d ban other clothing items way before the Burka 😂

anon12345anon · 04/06/2025 19:11

Yes. 100% it should be banned.

Do you think women wear the burka from
choixe?

anotherside · 04/06/2025 19:16

People read faces and facial expressions as a way of establishing trust and identifying members of a tribe/society. By covering (or in many cases being coerced into covering) one’s face, you’re literally removing a person from western society. You’re making it impossible for them to be a part of a community/society in which men and women are supposed to interact with one another in public settings as equals. It’s a bizarre thing to support.

Crazyworldmum · 04/06/2025 19:18

Yes . It’s repressive , by all means keep he hijab as a representation of faith but the burka is to repressive and honestly an offence to any progression made with women .

No. It would be extremely divisive for the country just when we don't need more divisions between communities, and it would fuel islamophobia and hate. We should be promoting tolerance between people in this country and banning the burkha won't achieve that.

We should promote tolerance and integration simultaneously. But being tolerant shouldn’t include being tolerant toward divisive (and often coercive) practices that hinder integration.

TheMel · 04/06/2025 19:21

No but we should ban covid masks. Especially in a specific demographic, as they only wear them to hide their thuggy faces.

FruityCider · 04/06/2025 19:21

I've worked for a decade in communities which include some burka wearing women. They have in general been pleasant to talk to and get on with their lives like everyone else. I'm an obviously queer atheist with tattoos - One lovely lady in particular invited me in to their house for tea (I declined!) got me a Christmas present, and It has never been an issue. I reciprocated with dates on Eid. We all get along fine.

Banning it, if they are being coerced or abused (and again, this is not the impression I get) would only serve to keep them indoors. What do you think the abusive husband are going to say? "okay love, they've banned it - could you just pop out to the shops with your hair out?" No. They'll just keep them inside more.

If you really want to help women from cultures which wear the burka, then don't dictate what they can and can't wear. Improve translation services. Host and go to community events. Reach out to the community and make sure they feel welcome. IME that's the way forward.

Some, yes certainly not all! There’s also men in western societies that make ‘their’ woman dress in a particular way too, Kanye west for one. You don’t need to ban clothing you need to save women from domestic violence and dictatorship.

Who is supporting the wearing of a burka? Certainly not me!

I just don't see how banning them would be in the 'interest of public safety'. How unsafe are they?

Has this new MP really nothing more important to say?

Yes, people who are appearing in court are now turning up in masks!

Ifpicklesweretickles · 04/06/2025 19:33

Yes a hundred percent, it's an oppressive and unsafe garment that has no place in this society, promotes division and normalises abuse of women "because it's their culture".
In countries where it originates from, our women aren't able to wear scrunched up hotpants with a bra in public because of the need to be respectful to local customs, works the other way too. Why should everything we fought against that's so harmful to women be supported.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/06/2025 19:35

Hate them- hate seeing them- agree no woman wears them through an actual choice or unbrain washed mind. Ban them? No! It’s a dangerous slope allowing a government to dictate what women wear.

Ddakji · 04/06/2025 19:36

You really can’t compare a burka with a habit, which is only worn by women who have chosen to become nuns. And habits don’t cover the face anyway.

I agree that banning items of clothing is problematic but all those who think the women who wear burkas have made a free choice to do so are in la-la-land.

Bollocks - no emotionally well adjusted woman chooses to not leave the house without her whole body covered. Ludicrous.

She was dressing in skimpy outfits pre-Kanye. I'm not denying he was/is a lunatic but there really are women who like being naked, just there are women who want to cover their bodies. I don't think her mesh dress was necessarily appropriate for the event but she was like that before him.

xanthomelana · 04/06/2025 18:42

Like I said anything that covers the face in public spaces should be banned and yes, that includes delivery drivers as well. Obviously when riding the bike they should wear a helmet but when they stop and get off to go inside to retrieve their deliveries it should be removed. I don’t know how retail staff are supposed to conduct a challenge 25 without seeing a face and considering they can be prosecuted for serving anyone underage I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask people to remove helmets, burkas or any other face coverings.

Agree. I feel strongly that face coverings should be banned. It would be easy enough to formulate exceptions for health/safety and stipulate when they're permitted.

If people want to go about in giant, flappy robes, that's up to them. But no to face coverings.

Do only emotionally well adjusted women have the right to choose what they wear then? Who gets to administer the tests? Is it like capacity where it fluctuates or is it a fail once and you're fucked deal?

The point is that they are not choosing - the point is also that it is the tip of the iceberg in how these women are treated.

if black men who worked for white men were coerced into full body coverings when they were in public do you think that should be banned?

DancefloorAcrobatics · 04/06/2025 20:04

I think to make it fair all full face covering in public spaces should be banned. That includes balaclavas, helmets with black visitors and burka.

2024onwardsandup · 04/06/2025 20:05

And it’s not telling women what they should wear - it’s bannning a practice put in place by MEN

it is about MEN making women wear something

Hedgehogshelp · 04/06/2025 20:09

Yes - I am all for informed consent and people being given choices.

But I am not sure how informed your consent is, if you risk alienation by relatives and have been indoctrinated from birth that it’s normal to hide your physical identity from birth. A simple headscarf I can get behind and dressing modestly (I wish more people did tbf!) but covering the face, your humanity, is awfully restrictive and only seems to be required by women not men.
