Will Reform win any votes at the local elections?

How do you think it can be made illegal?

Or in case of this thread, what does Reform think they can do to make it illegal?

They are allowed to turn the boats around?

Reform will have more money to spend on potholes with less immigration.

You seem confused. The local elections are about local issues, not "the boats".

Any country can refuse to accept someone.

By not paying hotel rooms.

Do you know the difference between immigrants and refugees?

There are these things called laws which can be changed by mps.

I listened to a very interesting analysis from Prof John Curtice who is a gold standard expert in these matters and basically the answer is that Reform will take votes off Labour and the Conservatives but that overall it's the Conservatives who are losing the most votes to Reform and it's not necessarily the case that those votes will translate to seats won.

Labour do badly need to pull their socks up though. They need to stop being so craven over Europe and accept that in a world where the US is no kind of ally, they need to join forces with their nearest powerful economic bloc.

Yes, and maybe consider an alliance with the lib dems?

MP's can change the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees?

All 4 Reform MP's can just do that?

There will likely be a lot more than 4 next time, at the rate the popularity is going, likely a majority.

This is exactly what I’m thinking. Would love to see them dealing with potholes, school crossing recruitment, bin collections the list goes on……

aren’t most / all the council elections in England on 1 May for county councils? The Councils with Chidrens Social Care, SEND, Adult Social Care responsibilities; critical services that take most of their budgets. Planning, collecting the bins is done by District Councils in those areas. I’m not sure having Reform in charge of the former services is a good idea. They’d undoubtedly make an even worse mess, but in services where lives are potentially at risk when things go wrong.

Hiddenmnetter · 19/04/2025 13:10

It’s a bit of a conservative delusion to think Reform are a challenge to Labour. They almost exclusively took votes from the Tories. Reform handed starmer the largest house lead in nearly 2 centuries. If I were Starmer I’d be sending Farage a bottle of champagne, a basket of flowers and money to keep campaigning.

It's not that simple. When the boats are in British water, we have an obligation under maritime law, to assist.

There's the principle of Non-refoulement which means that asylum seekers can't be sent to countries where they could be in danger. This principle is customary law, which means that Farage can't remove us from it.

What he'll attempt to do is ignore it. He'll then have to find out where people are from and arrange with their governments to accept them back. Trump is currently doing something similar.

Farage would have to ignore the courts, because even when he tears up human rights laws and scuppers us all, customary law still stands. Very expensive and time consuming business.

charliehungerford · 19/04/2025 13:16

The issue with local council elections is that people still
vote on national issues, hence Reform getting plenty of votes. It’s a protest vote due to the disappointment the electorate have with the bigger parties. So often people vote for the flag, they don’t vote for individuals. Voters will stick a cross in the Reform box without having done any research on the actual candidate and what they stand for locally. Many decent hard working councillors of all colours have lots their seats in this way.

Because the asylum seekers are on British soil/in British water and France has no obligation to take them.
