East Riding elected mayor - former boxer Luke Campbell - debate pre election.

I think he’s out of his depth here 😳.

I disagree that he was out of his depth even though he obviously lacked council experience. At least three of the other candidates indicated that they agreed with him on one or more points in their answers. The net zero question was a bit tricky for him but I thought he gave the best answer on the transport question (his bus anecdote was memorable). The Lib Dem and Labour candidates waffled on so much I sometimes forgot the question they were answering or the points they were making. Campbell was clear and concise, he sounded passionate about the local area, even if his answers were not perfect - his closing statement was good...

Are you unaware of the huge majority that Labour lost. They had a massive majority of almost 15,000. They lost 15,000 votes.

Fair enough if figures aren't your thing.

Edited

Me? the turn out was far less than in the GE....

...Figures clearly aren't your thing are they?

Alexandra2001 · 02/05/2025 21:44

Where will go now @Clavinova ? Reform? LD's? maybe the Greens? or maybe, as Labour move to the right, you may find a home there?

The Conservatives don't even hold a majority on a single council, lost all 18....

MaxTalk · 02/05/2025 21:48

The Tories should be far stronger but Kemi is absolutely useless unfortunately.

The arrogance shown by all politicians is what is driving this country down.

I don't think it would matter, people know full well who was in power for 14 years...

Its just a pity they think that Labour should be able to fix all our ills within 9 months.

Why should they be stronger? Nobody’s forgotten 14 years of lies and incompetence, it will take them at least a decade to recover - if they ever do.

The leader is out of her depth. They need a reset and someone with some competence.

However no party is really any good - politicians are politicians, irrespective of their beliefs.

The UK is a very divided country these days.

MsJinks · 02/05/2025 22:39

Take it the good people of Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire didn't watch the hustings pre election- just hope a clear job spec is provided for Luke Campbell now.
I'm fortunate as no elections here, so I don't know if my area is rabidly Reform and I can stay here in ignorant bliss for a further 12 months.
Sometimes I search Rightmove for houses over a border 😞

Straycats · 03/05/2025 08:36

Am glad they did so well. Conservatives and Labour have ignored the people, the parties we have in this country are dire, I just hope that there will be a massive shake up and they listen.

Has Farage even been to Clacton since he was elected? You really think he cares about the people? Lol.

I'm in Surrey and plan to vote Conservative.

how many Councils do you think the reorganised Surrey will have @Clavinova come the elections now due there next May?

My guess would be none. Surrey’s prime Lib Dem territory now.

It wasn’t really far less though. By-election 46%, which would put it nearer the upper end for a by-election, last GE in Runcorn 59%. So the gap far less than the typical difference.

Neither of those turnouts a ringing endorsement of active local interest.

Yes for a by-election it was at higher end.

Although I believe that the Conservatives still have 7 MPs in Surrey and the Lib Dems 6.

Hunt went to a recount, a few Tory voters go Reform and the Lib Dems win

Labour voters lent several thousand votes to the Lib Dems (nearly half of Labour's notional votes for 2019/boundary changes) - perhaps there will be a pact between the Conservatives and Reform for the next general election.

TopPocketFind · 03/05/2025 11:17

What would you call the Conservative-Reform pact?

There doesn't need to be a pact. If the Tories manage to sort themselves out, get rid of Kemi, and elect a decent leader, their disenfranchised voters will return to them and there'll be no need for Reform. The Tories have been on a mission to destroy themselves ever since they got rid of Boris. What with Truss, then Sunak and now Kemi - three completely unelectable potential PM's neither of whom had any competence or any popularity with the "silent majority" of their historical Tory voters. Much as I don't like him, if they brought back Boris as leader, they'd almost automatically regain massive support, as he was popular and said the right things, especially as regards the run down regions including Labour's "red wall" seats that Boris successfully took. The Tories need another leader to do similar, i.e. attract the disenfranchised voters outside London who are really struggling with lack of public services, lack of decent jobs, etc.

TopPocketFind · 03/05/2025 11:17

That depends - it could be an electoral pact or something deeper. I have no idea what the state of play will be in three or four years time.

TopPocketFind · 03/05/2025 11:29

A Boris and Nigel bullshitting contest would be funny if wasn't so tragic for the country.

Both Labour and Conservatives should stop to try out-reform Reform and go back to their roots.
