People smugglers are offering migrants a discount for crossing the Channel if they film their journey so it can be promoted on social media.

Migrants are encouraged to film the journeys and then post them on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook in order to lure others into making the dangerous crossings.

In return, they get a cheaper crossing as the footage boosts business for the smugglers.

The new tactic was revealed by Paul Brisley, from the National Crime Agency (NCA), which has been taking down the social media posts in an attempt to stem the crossings.

Yes I think that the only way to ‘stop the boats’ is to agree that everyone intercepted in the channel would be returned to France. I guess the French might agree to that but only if we agreed to take a significant number via safe legal routes.

the problem is that won’t be politically palatable because it would probably mean taking more migrants than we do now.

You can only do this if those people are still processed where they are returned. If they are granted asylum do they stay in France? How would you ensure the numbers weren’t exceptionally high?

yes, I assume they would need to be processed in France and some would stay there (and a some would come here and some would go to other European countries). Unless the law is changed so that fewer people qualify for asylum then they have to go somewhere.

Armed forces should be on the shores to prevent any illegal immigrant invading this country.

Open routes won’t solve the problem - there are many more people who want to come than we have capacity for. It’s very sad but we can’t keep adding the equivalent of the population of Cardiff every year.

Agreed. The taxpayer can't support everyone who fancies a new life here. Why should someone who's never paid into the NHS make waiting lists longer? A points system is the only way forward, it works for NZ and Aus.

Prevent saying promoting 'cultural nationalism' being a reason someone might be referred to them is stupidly irresponsible. People being scared to openly discuss these issues leaves the far right with a monopoly on it and their extremists are the ones who are a danger to migrants, not people concerned about classroom sizes and a collapsing NHS.

There are safe routes, we issue millions of visas. They'd just rather pay people traffickers to jump on a boat and get put up in a hotel with free meals and healthcare (at our expense) than apply for a visa.

We're that soft and generous that of course the smugglers will want to advertise that to potential 'customers'.

Edited

The only deterrent to small boats and the gangs who profit from them would be automatic decline of right to remain to anyone coming by that method but that'd be contrary to the section in the UN Declaration of Human Rights about the right to claim asylum. I fear the only way countries can and will tackle it is withdrawal from the Declaration which will have terrible consequences for other issues. But it's a very different world to the one we had when it was written and agreed. Just like the US constitution with its right to bear arms didn't envision automatic shotguns capable of firing dozens of rounds in a few seconds, agreement with the principles of the UN Declaration didn't mean we agreed to house and feed hundreds of extra young men on a daily basis who come here coordinated by internet while corrupt lawyers tell them what to say to drag cases through the court for years.

The way to stop crossings is to change what makes us a good prospect for migrants on entry.

No benefits, housing or free healthcare for 10 years should be a good start. No hotels, temp accomodation, years of paperwork. Come here legally or don't come at all.

Guest status for ten years that if you commit crime you are immediately removed.

Other countries manage to stem it via harder outcomes for those who do still take a chance. We are too attractive to them with everything available.

When the NHS and other public services are struggling due to health tourism and interpreter costs, not to mention illnesses due to life style choices, we need to do more. The reason they pay smugglers is because we are seen as a land of milk and honey. If we make ourselves hostile financially then watch numbers fall

I agree with this actually. We are literally welcoming everyone with open arms, and we need to stop that.

Trouble is that when the framework was drafted in 1951, Europe had raw recent memories of war. Then until the end of the century, the wars were mostly shorter and displaced fewer people, many of whom returned when crises ended. After that the internet, until now, every man and dog now has a smart phone and sees a world that looks like paradise. If life and prospects suck, it's easy to see why people make the journey.

Seymour5 · 24/06/2025 17:04

@Papyrophile exactly that, and it was what was needed at the time. I know the Mail is disliked here, but this article about the Manston holding centre can't all be fiction. Those running the country don't appear to have the will to take any meaningful action. I feel concerned, not for me or my generation, but for the future.

I think there should be a safe way for people like them to get here. Put the smugglers out of business. The money they take off people could be used by those people to start a decent life.

I think that once they get here they should be allowed to work. As soon as they've been established and identified.
Otherwise they will just get sucked into the black market or go missing. They shouldn't be allowed benefits until they've worked for five years or something.
The system now is just torturous as they keep them in these awful places in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, no education etc. they end up going crazy.

If they’re throwing their passports into the channel, how will they be identified and checked?

Plus the business of traffickers is multi billions worth.

Social media marketing means they can reach whomever.

I’m not sure how we have the convention and tear gas on French beaches, legally.

I've no idea. I presumed they simply didn't have passports or correct travel/ID docs anyway. So they must have their ways.
