Illegal immigration - thread no. 101

People smugglers are offering migrants a discount for crossing the Channel if they film their journey so it can be promoted on social media.

Migrants are encouraged to film the journeys and then post them on TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook in order to lure others into making the dangerous crossings.

In return, they get a cheaper crossing as the footage boosts business for the smugglers.

The new tactic was revealed by Paul Brisley, from the National Crime Agency (NCA), which has been taking down the social media posts in an attempt to stem the crossings.

And?

To raise awareness of the ever-changing tactics deployed by the wicked people smugglers.

What do you think?

The way to get rid of people smugglers is to provided legal routes.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 20/03/2025 08:37

@MyNameIsX , I wish there was some way of stopping these vermin’s vile business. They really are the lowest of the low. Thanks for the information.

LadyKenya · 20/03/2025 08:38

I think open safe routes for people.

The way to stop crossings is to change what makes us a good prospect for migrants on entry.

No benefits, housing or free healthcare for 10 years should be a good start. No hotels, temp accomodation, years of paperwork. Come here legally or don't come at all.

Guest status for ten years that if you commit crime you are immediately removed.

Other countries manage to stem it via harder outcomes for those who do still take a chance. We are too attractive to them with everything available.

When the NHS and other public services are struggling due to health tourism and interpreter costs, not to mention illnesses due to life style choices, we need to do more. The reason they pay smugglers is because we are seen as a land of milk and honey. If we make ourselves hostile financially then watch numbers fall

HermioneWeasley · 20/03/2025 08:45

Open routes won’t solve the problem - there are many more people who want to come than we have capacity for. It’s very sad but we can’t keep adding the equivalent of the population of Cardiff every year.

What a strange logic.

I’m not confident many will agree with you.

I don’t agree with you.

What about the number of immigrants?

I'm not bothered whether people agree with me or not. My view is that stopping irregular arrivals is best managed by having regular routes.

In reality, for all the hoo hah, the number coming via small boats are a drop in the ocean.

Around 40,000/year while 800,000 come in on visas to work, study and join family.

Rishi Sunak now admits the focus on 'Stop the Boats' was mistaken.

On the contrary, the floodgates would be opened, and the country overwhelmed.

Surprised and disappointed that you would want that, but there we are.

I think there should be a safe way for people like them to get here. Put the smugglers out of business. The money they take off people could be used by those people to start a decent life.

I think that once they get here they should be allowed to work. As soon as they've been established and identified.
Otherwise they will just get sucked into the black market or go missing. They shouldn't be allowed benefits until they've worked for five years or something.
The system now is just torturous as they keep them in these awful places in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do, no education etc. they end up going crazy.

No reason why properly safe routes with effective pre-screening of applicants would open floodgates.

As I've already said it's legal arrivals who make up the vast majority in the current system.

Rosybud88 · 20/03/2025 09:15

It is best managed by disincentivising people.
Why is it so important for so many to come here from France?
Why are people choosing to pay people smugglers thousands more than it would cost to come in via a visa? Plenty of people come here using a visa.

You wouldn’t be able to meet the demand. You’d have to consider how many would apply. Are you assuming it’s the same figure as crossings?

Slimbear · 20/03/2025 09:16

How many millions a year would you encourage to use these safe routes.

nomoretoriesforme · 20/03/2025 09:19

I’d say the cause of the problem is our politicians. They can resolve the problem , they don’t want to. Choose better next time.

dodgyplant · 20/03/2025 09:23

Some how along the way, we have forgotten our humanity. It's vile the rhetoric around this subject.

People talk about " smugglers". Even that is a stupid word. They are dealers, they deal in people.
This nonsense about Britain being a soft touch is well....nonsense.

dodgyplant · 20/03/2025 09:24

@BobbyBiscuits they end up setting fire to themselves. But that never reaches the news.

Yes they are thriving businesses worth billions, hence SM campaigns, marketing and even the ability to offer a better option which they call ‘VIP’ service and costs more.

As for the U.K. we are comparatively an attractive option, why do you think we’re not?

Azureshores · 20/03/2025 09:32

What are pp talking about: "there should be legal routes to come here"?
Pretty sure there ARE legal routes to come here. But most immigrants know they won't get in that way so take their chances illegally instead.

Do we really want every Tom, Dick and Harry coming here - criminals? Unskilled people with nothing to offer the economy? The people who think we should allow whomever wants to come here to have at it - what do you see happening to the infrastructure of the country if this is the case? Do you realise we have a housing crisis? That people are waiting months for hospital/dentist appointments - if you are lucky enough to get one. That the country is on its knees with crippling numbers out of work?

I'd suggest those of you who don't have a problem with it aren't yet feeling the impact of this crazy situation. In our city an encampment of tents has recently been moved on (after the council had to obtain a court order, get bailiffs involved etc). They have simply moved 50 yards down the road. That area has become a no go zone now after previously being an attractive part of the city.

Beggars line the route to the city walking amongst the traffic shaking a cup - this was not a thing even just a few years ago. The high street in our "naice" town now has several regular immigrant beggars - it's shocking how quickly things have deteriorated.

That would be other human beings then would it?

Seymour5 · 20/03/2025 09:58

@Azureshores Perhaps Sweden is an example we should heed.

I disagree.

I suggest the majority of Brits are ‘humanitarian’, but these things have their limits. Evidently, we have exceeded ours.

I have not seen any ‘vile rhetoric’ on this thread, so far - just opposing views.

OP posts:
Azureshores · 20/03/2025 10:02

Yes, and obviously it's a sad situation. There is something very wrong that they'd rather beg for money than get a job. Whether that is a problem with them personally or the system I'm not sure. And they disappear (probably to their homes) when the high street quietens down, they're not all homeless I don't think. There are professional beggars run by gangs unfortunately - it's a thing. I don't think giving them money really helps the situation.

So although I have sympathy for their situation I still don't want them on my high street. I don't want to see any beggars because it's shit isn't it?
