I can't actually believe what I'm reading. Zelensky ought to be ashamed of himself.

Oh shut up !

We need Hugh Grant

I have plenty of friends there and they’re utterly appalled. But that’s the half who didn’t vote for him. Who knows the other half. But to be honest I think you’d be shocked what your countrymen are capable of when push comes to shove. Lots of people are just awful.

I think Trump supporters will support him and Vance today- they don't want the US supporting a war in Europe that seem never ending and are costing them billions. They want the US to go it alone- they think they can. They don't see bigger pictures. They are not sophisticated thinkers.

I think he's asking for too much now. He wants everyone to fight this war forever. I wonder of Ukraine would send weapons, money and their men to defend America or the UK?

So what is your solution? To let Putin just take over whatever parts of Ukraine he wants? Who is next? Any country not in NATO I’d just on their own?

So is the solution to fight the war forever with the country of Ukraine as the battleground? UK and US just keep sending billions upon billions of pounds worth of arms?

I don't know what the solution is but I'm sure arms manufacturers are getting excessively rich on the back of this.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/02/2025 19:22

@BBQHulaHoops unfortunately it seemsaround 50% of his support in the US comes from immature knuckledraggers who would indeed say 'yeh you go Trump' and there's lots of them , particularly men -

Why?

The United States signed the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances with Ukraine on December 5, 1994. In return for protection, Ukraine gave up the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in world.

Russia apparently breached the Budapest memorandum in 2014 with its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea
As a response, the US, UK and France provided Ukraine with financial and military assistance and imposed economic sanctions on Russia, while ruling out "any direct interventions to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia"

Another key point was that U.S. State Department lawyers made a distinction between "security guarantee" and "security assurance", referring to the security guarantees that were desired by Ukraine in exchange for non-proliferation.

From Russia's point of view they deny breaking the Treaty as Ukraine had formed a new State and they (Russia) hadn't signed any agreement with it.
In February 2016, the Russian foreign minister claimed, "Russia never violated Budapest memorandum. It contained only one obligation, not to attack Ukraine with nukes"

So this shows a very complex situation.

Purplelodestone · 28/02/2025 18:52

Are you for real?

The US has sunk $119.7 billion (£94.3.billion) into Ukraine. As Ukraine isn't a NATO Member the US is not obliged to help.

Zelensky needs to modify his attitude or Trump may well pull the plug on him.

Who TF cares?? We're talking about OUR NEIGHBOURS who've been invaded, bombed and murdered UNPROVOKED by the fricking Russians!! I don't see us supporting Ukraine against Russia any different to how we supported Poland against Germany!

spoodlesee · 28/02/2025 19:23

Think of all the Hollywood films where POTUS is shown as super dignified, patriotic, civilised etc. well they can't portray him like that anymore 😆

I can't actually believe what I'm reading. Zelensky ought to be ashamed of himself.

Really. That's what you got from that exchange?

Two schoolyard bullies without a clue haranguing a leader of another country and Zelensky is the one who needs to be ashamed?

ImJustFineTYVM · 28/02/2025 19:23

Awful bullying. Why the Americans haven't understood that Trump is pretty much a Russian asset is beyond me.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/02/2025 19:23

@ThejoyofNC have you been on the sherry?!

I hear they're putting on planes to florida for their superfans

2025willbemytime · 28/02/2025 19:23

It made for really uncomfortable viewing but in a way I'm glad we've seen it. Maybe Ukraine will get more support and the US will be ignored more. <probably wishful thinking>

anon4net · 28/02/2025 19:24

I had to turn it off, I felt sick for Zelensky.

Trump and Vance are bullies and the world is allowing it.

These are dark days for international politics and political stability.

Does that mean anything though? Like who can enforce it?

Up till now the agreement has been honoured by the US supplying weapons for the defence of the Ukraine. Dirty Donald and the couch-shagger are tearing the agreement up and rolling over for Putin to tickle their bellies.

Trump and Vance disgusting disgusting disgusting. Zelensky has more courage and backbone than either of those 2 spivs.

America has a short memory, Europe came to their defence after 9/11, conveniently forgotten.

spoodlesee · 28/02/2025 19:24

Fuck me, who watches this & comes to the above conclusion. we are doomed!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/02/2025 19:24

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 28/02/2025 19:11

I'm allowed to ponder.

Where have you been? FGS. Russia lined up tanks along the border claiming it was just a military exercise. Putin agreed to China's request to not invade Ukraine until the Olympics in Beijing were finished.
THEN PUTIN INVADED UKRAINE.

Ukraine is in a fight for it's life. Russia occupies about 20pc now. Russia has bombed Ukraine's hospitals. And schools. Do you know how many children have been killed?! Ukraine has fought fairly all along.

But, go on pondering and musing about how angry you'd be if your son was conscripted.

LadyKenya · 28/02/2025 18:19

I highly doubt it, was he not simpering up to Trump, Yesterday?

Yes, I thought that was pretty cringeworthy.

spoodlesee · 28/02/2025 19:25

America has a short memory, Europe came to their defence after 9/11, conveniently forgotten.

Don't they owe NATO money?

Noperope · 28/02/2025 19:25

A 'question' from a US journalist. The whole thing was a set up. Poor Zelensky.

I can't actually believe what I'm reading. Zelensky ought to be ashamed of himself.

Why should he? In my opinion Trump (who keeps boasting what a great negotiator he is) and Vance should be ashamed by bullying someone they really wanted a deal with. What kind of way is that to negotiate??

tallhotpinkflamingo · 28/02/2025 19:26

Crikeyalmighty · 28/02/2025 19:17

@tallhotpinkflamingo ah but this pair wanted it so all would be catching it on TV -

Well quite, that's why they baited him. But it's massively backfired. Sympathy and support for Zelensky and Ukraine will be massive after this.

US was only giving 42% of Ukraine's support, if everyone puts a bit more in and there are some extra contributions from countries that haven't got involved yet, it's easily surpassed.

Some minor NATO country needs to put boots in Ukraine and trigger article 5 now.
