So much for the Trump Bounce

All is promises at the before the election...now he says he can't promise anything. Stock market has nose dived and NATO are sending troops to Greenland because of his threats, the people of Gaza are being told to leave to go no one knows because Trump was it as a holiday destination.

He's pulled out of the climate treaty, the world health organisation and now imposed sanctions on the ICC.

I dispair and despise the Americans who voted this man in because we now have to deal with the consequences of the fallout of that man.

Could you remind me how Trump is a “convicted sex offender”?

That wasn’t the objection, it was that ‘fundamental right Christian’s’ support him

It was anti Christian rhetoric

Calling out extremists of a faith is not anti-Christian. I will, as a Catholic, happily call out the non-Christian, hypocritical actions of prosperity Gospel evangelists who seem to have forgotten that Jesus threw the money lenders OUT of the Temple rather than inviting them in!

Possibly because anyone who followed the actual teaching of Jesus would NOT support Trump’s presidency.

Totally this👆

I'm a Christian and can find nothing Christian about Trump's behaviour or his agenda. As for Musk - don't even get me started!

@hamstersarse there are Christians who hold very strong right wing views that I find run counter to teachings of Jesus. And overwhelmingly that democratic support Trump despite his unsavoury personal life. Felony convictions and sexual abuse track record.

The self same Christians who regularly cite scripture to justify their anti LGBT stance whilst ignoring the thou shalt not steal. And thou shall not commit adultery.

Like so many blind cult followers you wilfully deflect and distort with whataboutery and misinformation.

I'd have more respect for Trumpers if they just owned what he stands for and what he's done

Wrong. Like any religion, both are a load of rubbish, based on daft ideas a few people espoused many centuries ago. Believe whatever you like about an omnipresent sky daddy, but don’t think for a moment that he should get to decide about abortions or homosexuality or anything else.

Very authoritarian of you to decide that people can’t be religious

You can be as religious as you like but don’t expect to force your beliefs on other people. That’s what’s authoritarian.

Trump stands for small government and free speech

I totally own that?

He doesn’t have a problem with ‘far right Christian’s’ who are against abortion. He doesn’t even agree. Neither do I. People are entitled to their view. I don’t actually agree, but I can see their point and also respect that they are people to provide checks and balances, cover the full range of opinion. If we all thought, abortion at any time (which some radicals do) I don’t think we’d be in a good place. They too are important in the debate of course, but they are the folks who want to censor and suppress the others opinions, and that’s where I lose support for them,

What you see from the left though increasingly, is censorship and a demand for certain views to be the only views. So anyone who is pro life is just labelled a monster for women, why? Can you not tolerate another opinion?

That’s why I’m asking about the now Totally Acceptable criticism of Christianity that is mainstreamed by the left, it’s classed as wrong think to be hard Christian according to the left, not allowed, That is what I object to.

Trump is ironically more accepting of opposing views than the people on the left. He is way more libertarian, doesn’t want speech censored, wants to reduce laws that impact freedom and regulation not increase them.

Quite right.

My religious beliefs stop where your civil rights start.

People, there's no point arguing with Trump supporters. They live in a state of delusion, and if you think that's too strong a word, how else can you describe thinking a serial liar is honest, or a man who helped make abortion illegal and has been credibly accused of rape (who said himself (!!) Grab them by the pussy) is supporting women. Or someone who incited Jan 6 and pardoned people who tried to kill police and lawmakers, cares about law and order. These people live in an alternative reality and never have to leave because they go online and find all these other deluded people to help them think their world is real.

Now they'll come and say this is why people vote Trump, because of people like me calling them delusional. Absolute bollocks. No one votes for such an extreme racist authoritarian unless they're OK with being ruled by an extreme racist authoritarian. Just own it and stop blaming other people for being such a terrible person.

I wouldn’t mind if you argued based on facts, I’d listen

But you’ve literally done the Full House - rapist, incited January 6th and banned abortion

None of these are true? So how can I take it seriously?

They didn’t say he banned abortion, they said he helped make it illegal. Which he did, by altering the composition of the Supreme Court, which led to the Roe v Wade decision being overruled, which led to a number of states restricting or virtually removing legal access to abortion. Do you struggle with basic comprehension?

BIossomtoes · 09/02/2025 12:18

Not when it’s forced on other people and impacts on their lives. Anti abortion? Don’t have one and don’t stop other people having one.

Yes exactly.

They are not very good at nuance and so they accuse you of lying.

Did Trump sign a law banning abortion? No. Did he help get abortion banned? Yes, because he explicitly packed the Supreme Court with judges who would overturn Roe, in exchange for evangelical support.

You can go through all their objections like this. But they are not objecting in good faith. They object because they need to keep the delusion going otherwise they would have to admit they fell for all this propaganda, and the human mind protects itself from this kind of psychological rupture.

So who is responsible if states decided to restrict abortion?
How is that Trumps issue?

Trump promised to facilitate individual states doing it, which he did. Come on, this isn’t difficult!

hamstersarse · 09/02/2025 14:08

The core of the argument was that Roe vs Wade represented judicial over reach to have it grounded in Federal Law because it was never explicitly mentioned as a ‘right’ in the constitution and thereby it should, strictly legally speaking, be decided by legislation at state level

I don’t think anyone can say Trump is ‘anti abortion’. He’s historically pro choice, against late term, but it’s just not one of his big things, of course there were republicans who wanted the legal over reach from R v W reversed so they could legislate at local level, but there are also many democrats who also accept that there are a lot of questions around abortion rights being a federal issue

I know it’s easy to say Trump ruined women’s rights, but it’s a lot more complicated and if you listen to what he actually says, he’s simply against late abortions and thought R v W was not a constitutional law and it needed to go back to the states. If you support the constitution, it is the only conclusion, legally.

Fascinating. So do you now accept that PP did not state that Trump banned abortion?

hamstersarse · 09/02/2025 14:48

@MemorableTrenchcoat are you joking?

They amended their claims to ‘facilitate’ rather than ban but the usual trope is ‘Trump destroyed women’s rights”

It’s so odd how people see the same events and perceive it completely differently

I see Trump bringing renewed optimism, blatant honesty and rebuilding trust

DOGE, for example, is absolutely glorious. I wish it existed here

DOGE are a bunch of young men, under the control of a foreign oligarch, who have accessed all social security numbers and private citizen information, have downloaded all the information they've accessed onto President Musk's own servers and for who knows what purpose?

DEI abolition means only straight white men can apply for jobs and the recent moves to remove OSHA is the equivalent of removing all Health & Safety legislation here

Even the acronym is a play on crypto-currency
