So much for the Trump Bounce

All is promises at the before the election...now he says he can't promise anything. Stock market has nose dived and NATO are sending troops to Greenland because of his threats, the people of Gaza are being told to leave to go no one knows because Trump was it as a holiday destination.

He's pulled out of the climate treaty, the world health organisation and now imposed sanctions on the ICC.

I dispair and despise the Americans who voted this man in because we now have to deal with the consequences of the fallout of that man.

I remember the last time he was President enjoying the ridiculousness. This time I'm fascinated but it's really frightening. He and Musk have landed with Kristallnacht, a shock and awe process of dismantling, crashing and cutting. The tariffs on Mexico and Canada will only hurt the little people - the economy took a nose dive and then the moves were paused. He's claiming a victory of extra border security and claiming it's all about fentanyl but really it's about racism, bullying and wanting to impose trade on their terms. It will damage US businesses and raise prices (eggs now ten times more expensive). He claims it's a win when he paused it and was rancorous about the nerve of them taking a stand and imposing retaliatory tariffs back. China are more serious foes on the sanctions war and will not cave, they will also take advantage of any withdrawal of aid to unstable parts of the world to gain influence.

Meanwhile as prices go up he's planning huge tax giveaways to the super rich and removing competition and anti trust measures for the largest companies and tech bros. Unregulated markets and control of news and information.

And if the motivation seems random first check for racism. Look at today's news offering asylum to Afrikaners whilst simultaneously looking to expel Hispanics and Muslims. Or backing genocidal Israel whilst seeking to deport a whole population of Palestinians from their homelands. Next he will be wanting to deport native Americans!

The rise of Elon Musk is also terrifying as he's running rampant through government departments reviewing personal data and blocking federal spending - most worrying will not be US international aid cuts as their scale of spend is small but those in education, social welfare and Medicaid. Again it's the poorest and most vulnerable who will lose out in the country with the greatest and most rigid wealth inequalities in the world.

Worse still is the risk that they are dismantling democracy. All these changes (thankfully some temporarily blocked by the courts) are by executive order not through Congress. But the biggest worry is that middle ground politicians and the traditional senators and representatives are terrified of opposing Trump because Musk can bank roll any Maga opponents to unseat them in local primaries. It's extremely frightening - if Trump won't go at the end of his term or Musk starts becoming the de facto dictator with an increasingly infirm President. That's why it's important there's real and determined opposition now. There is a real threat to democracy, the world economy and global stability. Fucking hell America!

Particularly seeing as processing asylum claims would require more civil servants.
And you don’t know they’re illegal immigrants until you have processed those claims. It is not illegal to claim asylum.

Do you not believe in borders?

It is not illegal to claim asylum, but it is illegal to jump in a boat and breach the border. It’s not hard.

hamstersarse · 09/02/2025 07:36

GrammarTeacher · 09/02/2025 07:26

We need net zero (at least) if you actually want humanity to survive. The civil service has been cut to the bone to the extent that it is costing money in other areas of the public sector.

What do you actually want them to do about illegal immigration?

You really think we are all going to die if we don’t cut carbon by 2030? And make us all poor by taxing the shit out of us and jizzing all the tax revenue on windmills?

I’m not sure I can take such hyperbole seriously

hamstersarse · 09/02/2025 07:40

@Bouledeneige

It’s hard to overstate how much you’ve been overwhelmed and brainwashed by propaganda.

Is there any part of you that acknowledges that the previous administration was rotten to the core? Who was even in charge for the past 4 years? You really think Biden was?

The eggs argument is my special favourite. Millions of birds have been culled due to avian flu, it’s a shortage. We are more than likely about to have the same as a million birds who produced 50% of barn eggs were culled a week or so ago. You understand supply and demand?

How do you advise people claim asylum then? They can’t do it until they’re here. How would you advise they go about it? It’s not illegal to be a refugee.

Do you not see the climate crisis. Do you think the LA fires were normal??

GoldenGail · 09/02/2025 07:53

dubsie · 08/02/2025 08:39

You are a fool then, sacking millions of government workers is not glorious and hand the savings to a tiny minority of wealthy individuals is hardly something I'd be proud of.

This is the end of America as a democratic nation....Trump won't concede if he loses next time....he's a Hungarian dictator in the making

He can’t stand next time so not relevant

Bouledeneige · 09/02/2025 07:53

I'm very well informed. I said nothing about the state of the USA and how the previous regime operated. The USA has long been run by big business and vested interests and been the most unequal society on the planet. Take access to education and health and opportunities for social mobility. Trump will reify and exacerbate that.

I judge the current administration in their own performance and read objective independent media and listen to podcasts. Try it. Not Joe Rogan, Steve Bannon or X.

MonotoneHerbivore · 09/02/2025 07:55

hamstersarse · 08/02/2025 08:14

It’s so odd how people see the same events and perceive it completely differently

I see Trump bringing renewed optimism, blatant honesty and rebuilding trust

DOGE, for example, is absolutely glorious. I wish it existed here

Funny how people perceive convicted, sex abusing, felons differently. Your glorious is debauched.

dottiehens · 09/02/2025 08:06

I doubt Americans who voted for him are regretting it. However, we should have enough to worry about with the Marxist lot here.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum. I’m so glad that as a woman I don’t live in that country.

What about the declaration to keep men out of women's sports? Don't you agree with that?

Yea, having the cisterns empty of water was not normal so the fire spread with the winds before they could even control it. However, how is that got to do with climate change? Can you link the proof of the investigation results?

They are FAR from Marxist!

Amongst other things, closing down all overseas humanitarian aid, which makes up 0.6% of the Federal budget.

GrammarTeacher · 09/02/2025 07:50

Do you not see the climate crisis. Do you think the LA fires were normal??

Genuinely you need to open your mind

The fires in LA were not about climate change, they were bad fire management (bush, water) and very poor luck with the wind being strong and from the right (wrong) direction (not due to climate change, just normal winds for the area)

How do you even explain that climate change caused the fires?!!

FrutenGlee · 09/02/2025 08:35

Christ what a scary mess. He’s been in a month and already completely crazy and dangerous.

GrammarTeacher · 09/02/2025 08:36

It makes them more likely and more regular. I’m not the one who needs to open my mind if you think you can go on destroying the environment with no consequences.

Is there any part of you that thinks there may be some corruption in USAID? Any corruption at all?!

Governments have a duty to spend tax payer money responsibly and not to be lining the pockets of dubious leaders / NGOs.

If there is even the possibility that Taxpayer money is part of corrupt ‘Humanitarian Aid’ programmes, it needs to be stopped immediately, which is what they have done.

If you hate people lining their pockets from dodgy deals, take a look at what they’ve found in USAID, and tell me how Trump is wrong

Feels like a small issue in the grand scheme of things.

Freysimo · 09/02/2025 08:11

What about the declaration to keep men out of women's sports? Don't you agree with that?

Trump has no power to do that because sport is international unless you propose America pulling out of international sport as well.

I don't disagree with on the subject by the way, I believe sex at birth should be the factor that determines who you compete with. I have absolutely no problem with people transitioning genders but that's a personal decision and sport has to be considered fair which is why we have drug testing and sex determines who you can compete with.

The problem is Trump is making these deeply divisive issues political and it's tearing society apart. It would be a hell of a lot more constructive to have a sensible debate and bringing it sports people and doctors etc to make these decisions for sports organisations.

I think anyone with an ounce of common sense will tell you sex at birth is the only real way to make sure competition is fair. And I think if you look at the evidence the international sports organisations are already moving in that direction.

Isn't it obvious? Where once a long, hot, dry spell was relatively rare, they are now coming around more frequently. Whilst it will never be exactly regular, we are in a situation where wildfires in the US were a rarity, and we are now in a situation where they have to be alert to the danger at least once every two or three years.

FrutenGlee · 09/02/2025 08:37

imagine just for a second I was right and that incompetent public services (no water, no bush clearing) were to blame for the fires, wouldn’t it just be great to blame some ethereal impossible to quantify concept like ‘climate change’, previously known as global warming,

I too can do a quick google and show that rainfall in la hasn’t changed, it’s pretty steadily unpredictable.
