So much for the Trump Bounce

All is promises at the before the election...now he says he can't promise anything. Stock market has nose dived and NATO are sending troops to Greenland because of his threats, the people of Gaza are being told to leave to go no one knows because Trump was it as a holiday destination.

He's pulled out of the climate treaty, the world health organisation and now imposed sanctions on the ICC.

I dispair and despise the Americans who voted this man in because we now have to deal with the consequences of the fallout of that man.

@dubsie Anyone who doesn't realise the power and influence of foreign aid needs to look at China's 'foreign aid' machinations in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean for starters. Trump has two aims - Financial benefit to himself/family and revenge on those who oppose him.

The world is truly in a dark place today. Trump is all about the deal and seeing who blinks first. His on/off tariffs could bounce the entire world into recession but that's OK because his companies will be $$$$$$ in, busy building a holiday resort in Gaza.😡

Well it’s not ok. But theres absolutely nothing we can do about it.

Kendodd · 08/02/2025 12:01

Any polling on what American voters (particularly Trump voters) think of Trumps plans to take Greenland, Panama Canal and now Gaza? Are Trump voters cheering this on? I suspect they are.

EasternStandard · 08/02/2025 12:01

GildedRage · 08/02/2025 08:51

the USA is broke, trillions in debt no source of income will be left unturned.
it’s really pathetic to see how many organizations and countries are totally dependent on the US.

Dependency is incredibly high, US voters have said no to that continuing

Snippit · 08/02/2025 12:02

The lunatics have taken over the asylum. I’m so glad that as a woman I don’t live in that country.

heyhopotato · 08/02/2025 12:31

I'm centre left but Trump doesn't bother me. I don't think he's going to do much damage in reality.

He likes to say ridiculous things for attention, they don't happen.

Was going to build a wall - didn't finish it, isn't planning to finish it.
Was going to implement tariffs - been put on hold, we all know that anything like that will be a token gesture at best if it does go ahead.
Was going to stop money to Ukraine - no plans to stop sending them money.

These are all basic things he could easily have done, so anything actually difficult like taking territory, is so far beyond him it's never going to happen.

He's trying to win the space race with Elon, get more money for himself and his family, and throw the idea of power around to maintain his ego and give himself the idea of a legacy, so I really don't think he's going to do anything extreme. He also doesn't want to risk a second term being bad or have difficulties because that will be the legacy he finishes on.

His method of operation is to look chaotic and unpredictable to confuse/scare international enemies.

PiggyPigalle · 08/02/2025 13:07

Don't look there, look here.

Labour paying billions to give away strategic territory.
Labour opening talks for reparation to Caribbean countries.
Labour threatening universities that their funding will be cut, unless they concentrate more on what is already well covered, DEI.

How’d you feel that Trump has stopped all the transgender nightmare? Was that anti woman? Would Kamala have stopped men playing in womens sport / being in female prisons / refuge centres?

He’s a deal maker

Panama Canal is a bad deal for the us. He has a point whether you like it or not.

The people of Greenland are not unanimously against Trump, they have issues with Denmark

The Gaza thing has already got Jordan and other Arab states off their arse so they don’t have to take millions of Palestinians. He’s also got a ceasefire

I think lots of people are just reacting to the absolute hardcore disruption he’s creating. It is uncomfortable. But if you take an unemotional look at what he’s doing, it’s all very common sense. Just a gigantic change to the rot that had set in,

Echobelly · 08/02/2025 16:28

I hope you are right @heyhopotato - the next month or two will be critical in seeing what he actually gets away with. There have already been legal pauses put on several of his moves, such as some of the firings and aid freezes, but what that amounts to in the longer term remains to be seen.

I don't think Trump is a dealmaker. He's a bully and a conman (and not even a clever one, he just doesn't pay people and knows his lawyers will defeat theirs) - he's bad at deals because all he wants to do is win and come out on top. He has no concept of a win-win, which is how good dealmakers work, he just wants to fuck the other guy over. So yeah, I'd say he's a pretty shitty dealmaker.

There's no way any of his proposed changes will do any good for America. Has he actually proposed anything he's going to do with this 'saved money' from DOGE to help Americans? Raise minumum wages? Lower taxes? Subsidise eggs?

He sure as shit isn't going to make healthcare affordable, in fact he is committed to the opposite.

No, he's going to continue to crow about making the lives of other people worse to distract his fanbase for the fact he is doing sweet FA for them and that 'the money' is most likely going to end up in the pockets of him and his mates. Normally I'd say that kind of 'oh they're lining their own pockets' things is simplistic thinking but I think it is genuinely what is happening here.

It’s so odd how people see the same events and perceive it completely differently

I see Trump bringing renewed optimism, blatant honesty and rebuilding trust

DOGE, for example, is absolutely glorious. I wish it existed here

He is the most slippery bastard going. How you can trust him is beyond rational thought.

SassK · 08/02/2025 17:05

He's bringing back plastic straws. Surely that must endear him to you, to at least some degree? No more soggy straws 🎉

hamstersarse · 08/02/2025 17:31

well he wants to get rid of income tax?
that sounds decent

GildedRage · 08/02/2025 17:41

his threats to tariff canada had canada beef up border and drug surveillance issues to the tune of 1.3 billion which will translate into some savings on the usa side.
trump is uncouth and aggressive but i can see his bold (rash threats to canada) have been helpful to canadians as a nation take interest and action on stuff we were simply coasting along and ignoring (ignoring as in the issues are too big to tackle, no one agrees on how, and blaming lack of resources).

hamstersarse · 08/02/2025 18:01

Let’s be real, he’d sort out our border issues within 24 hours, we are an island ffs

Trump has no control over abortion laws. I don’t know why people willingly choose to not hear this

It is at STATE level abortion laws are being made. You need to take it up with states that you disagree with

The things he has already achieved this term are more worrying that what happened last time and it’s just beginning

Roe V Wade made it a federal issue. A Trump
appointee to the Supreme Court enabled the long campaigned for overturning of Roe V Wade. Trump stacked the Supreme Court.
Of course the Dems should have finished the job decades ago. But it was indeed Trump who enabled the final gambit in the over turning of Roe V Wade. It should be a stark reminder to us here that you can’t rely on rights you think are already won.

We need net zero (at least) if you actually want humanity to survive. The civil service has been cut to the bone to the extent that it is costing money in other areas of the public sector.

What do you actually want them to do about illegal immigration?

GrammarTeacher · 09/02/2025 07:27

Particularly seeing as processing asylum claims would require more civil servants.
And you don’t know they’re illegal immigrants until you have processed those claims. It is not illegal to claim asylum.
