At this point in time it doesn’t really matter what her policies are - we probably have another 4.5 years till the next general election . Tory policies will evolve in that time - labours did ! What matters now is that there is an effective opposition to Labour - and that they are held to account .

A YouGov poll published ahead of the result found four in 10 voters had an unfavourable view of Ms Badenoch, including 29% of Conservative voters, while Britons were more likely to think Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would make a better prime minister.

The conservatives have just pulled into the lead - so one of those claims is definitely wrong!

Really shocked by the comments welcoming this even further lurch to the extreme right.
It’s not good news for women.

I am extremely happy! It’s great news for women who were girls at birth. Perhaps not so great for the ones who were boys - but anyone with half a brain surely knows that this is a situation that is getting so out of hand and discriminatory for biological women that someone with sensible views is needed? I am not impressed with some of her other views, but since sex and gender is the worst threat to women’s rights there has been in my lifetime, I honestly couldn’t care less - I don’t think there was anyone else who I could believe would protect women. And that is my primary concern above all else.

Does it matter? She is intelligent which is good, and I doubt she'll go full hog on a campaign line like the toolmaker one. I mean what use is that anyway

It's important when people are saying she's working class, obviously.

Oh give over, politicians have always been given nicknames by the press.

This may be true but it is incredibly one- sided. It tends to be Labour politicians given demeaning nicknames not the Conservatives. It's a tactic used by right-wing media to discredit and belittle the Labour politicians they so despise and fear .

Userxyd · 02/11/2024 16:35

Great news. I don't agree with her on everything but she's a strong very smart woman and she will hold Labour to account as they need to be with such a clear majority. Best opposition leader in a very long time.

I just Googled it. She hasn’t been on R4 for over a week according to BBC Sounds.

And that was just the light weight pre-recorded Political Thinking with Nick Robinson. It's aim is background. There were no policies revealed.

EasternStandard · 02/11/2024 16:38

I believe More in Common put Conservatives above Labour for the first time in three years just recently

That must be a record drop for a new gov

On googling it seems Starmer's rating has tanked and overall the report card is D-, more Britons prefer the last gov to this one and are doing badly on issues that matter most - all More in Common first 100 days

I'd say they've given Kemi enough to start with, given she hasn't even got going yet as leader

That was for @PandoraSox

Is it? I just saw 'Cruella' on one of these threads today

Papyrophile · 02/11/2024 16:39

She was so obviously far superior to Jenrick, I am pleased she won. Now we can look forward to the fireworks at PMQs.

Badenoch isn't working class, her parents are successful professionals.

It wasn't me making a deal over it, a PP was. I was just highlighting that Starmer is a hypocrite over this but I forgot no-one is allowed to criticise his holiness 🙄

Agreed!

D23456789 · 02/11/2024 16:41

I also don't agree with all she says but I think she has the strength to challenge Labour, which is what we need. I wonder how Starmer will manage her; we have interesting days ahead and no doubt, more firey debates on Mumsnet LOL.

NetZeroZealot · 02/11/2024 16:01

Why do you think it’s making us poorer?
Relying on imported fossil fuels is making us poorer for sure.

A rapid transition to Net Zero is unwise at best.

1 - We don’t have adequate infrastructure or technology to shift to renewables. This means significant investment immediately at huge expense to the population. Energy that is produced from renewables is both high cost and unreliable. Additionally, the amount of energy we can produce from renewables is insufficient at the moment, and we already know what supply and demand does to costs. We can expect our energy costs to rise further for the foreseeable.

2 - Fossil fuel sectors and other sectors that utilise fossil fuels are likely to see hundreds, thousands of job losses. Renewables are completely different and workers may not be retained for retraining.

3 - The less money you have, the bigger percentage of it gets spent on energy. As energy bills rise, this leaves the poorest, even poorer.

4 - As previously mentioned, we need a lot of money to transition to Net Zero. That means more tax and/or more investment. Like most new investment, return takes time. Often many years. And it will be many years before we see any benefit. In the meantime, we will be expected to keep investing. And all this time, abroad they’ll be investing in fossil fuel and nuclear, leaving us behind.

5 - Such a huge transition can slow down economic growth. As the country ploughs money into ‘a greener future’, people will have to spend more on energy, or go without/cut down at times of short supply. With more money ploughed into energy, there is less to spend in other sectors.

To mitigate these risks, it is vital that policymakers should have planned a gradual transition to net zero that considers economic stability, job creation, and support for the vulnerable. They haven’t. It’s just a race, a vanity project.

Balancing environmental goals with economic realities should be essential to avoid making the country poorer in the pursuit of sustainability. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, we’re in a race with a small group of other western countries, Germany, France, New Zealand, Canada etc intent on doing ourselves as much harm as possible in pursuit of Net Zero…and in the end, we won’t make a blind bit of difference to global emissions.

Why are you sneering at Starmer's dad's job?

His dad who owned the entire factory?

I wonder how many of the people who voted for her know her full name is Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke Badenoch, it seems a bit too progressive for them compared to Robert Jenrick.

Well I'm sure most of the voters knew her full name, background and political opinions since its patently obvious that Conservatives are far, far more progressive than Labour. Given that she is the 4th female leader and 2nd POC.

Labour meanwhile are still hamstrung by the misogyny and racism of their Union masters.

Ignore the emoji I couldn't get rid off it.

God you are really rattled by such a powerful woman sweeping onto the stale, pale dusty political scene.

Not rattled at all! I am all for powerful women sweeping aside the stale pale, dusty political arena. But Badenoch is no revolutionary.

I will be happy to be proved wrong as it is far better to have some consistency in the leadership of the opposition party. Plus I think a Tory party led by Badenoch in 2029 would mean a win for Labour.

Career wise, I am sure it will be great for the majority of those who were boys at birth once we have gone back to the 1970s or earlier with regard to maternity leave and probably a lot of "woke" legislation on gender equality.

I think there's a high chance Labour will be leaving an open door by then, they have already sunk their lead within a record time

And I think people underestimate Kemi, they thought she wouldn't win this race too but did, she'll stick at it and have a fair shot

She thinks businesses are hamstrung by too much regulation eg statutory rights.

Maternity leave isn't great for childfree women.
