Who is then? Not labour, not lib Dems, not greens. This is the closest I can get....

Absolutely knew that would be the come back. 'What about? What about?"

Every time it's pointed how dispicable Tory policies are for women.

I wonder how many of the people who voted for her know her full name is Olukemi Olufunto Adegoke Badenoch, it seems a bit too progressive for them compared to Robert Jenrick.

Blimey it's all coming out today

I wonder what it is about Kemi that gets people posting along these lines

PandoraSox · 02/11/2024 16:24

She won't last longer than a couple of years, it is another IDS moment for the Tories.

I would go further, stop meddling in other countries.

Yes but we are America's most devoted poodle.
The thing that frustrates me is that people don't see the connection between starting wars and trying to overturn other regimes and the flood of refugees who then turn up in Europe as immigrants.
They like to talk about reducing immigration but have nothing to say on how that will work economically and are certainly not happy to give up their state pension on their free education to make the figures add up a little better.

I'm really pleased. She'll give Starmer a run for his money.

God you are really rattled by such a powerful woman sweeping onto the stale, pale dusty political scene.

Gilead · 02/11/2024 16:26

Oh good grief, the middle class woman who became working class because she had a part time job in Maccies!

I'm delighted. She'll be brilliant.

But not when discussing maternity pay, which she thinks has "gone too far" - but which compared with much of the rest of Europe is a pittance.

That was her personal opinion, not a policy proposal

The reaction is better than I expected. Pretty good actually!

All this she won't last stuff, Cleverly would be more of a threat from Labour posters. All good

I would genuinely like to know how her comments about autistic people have been misunderstood, as currently having someone with those views in such a position of authority is worrying to me.i do mean that genuinely as I would feel much happier if her comments were misunderstood. I read articles like this one and as a parent of an adult with autism, can’t quite believe the ignorance and prejudice on display if this is what she really thinks. www.forbes.com/sites/drnancydoyle/2024/10/15/kemi-badenoch-accidentally-describes-the-social-model-of-disability/

She was endorsing this pamphlet: Rise of the Bureaucratic Class or, if you prefer the whole url, https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/66e290977b0f17041797e6ae/66fb3a4aa6d5bf17f7481ed1_Conservatism%20in%20Crisis.pdf

The relevant sections are the two (fairly short) sections on The Socialisation of Mental Health on pages 6 and 18. I haven't read any of the rest of the pamphlet

After criticism she said (according to the Independent): It would be "wrong to infer any prejudice" from the report. Adding that the authors of the report "see the rising impact of mental health and its effect on productivity" as a critical issue facing society. (I couldn't find the original comments.)

The leaflet does appear to conflate mental health conditions and neurodivergent conditions and I would be interested (and I mean that genuinely) in the economic advantages the writers think are afforded to people with autism and anxiety (those are the two conditions listed as examples), but the point of the sections is to discuss why we make these types of diagnoses and what accommodations should be made for them by employers and the law. I suspect I would disagree with her quite profoundly about how we would go about tackling the problems identified (e.g. the rise in welfare spending connected with mental health problems) but the point of the pamphlet is to identify problems that she perceives need to be addressed and I think it is really important that we are able to talk about these things, decide if they are problems and, if they are, discuss (and likely disagree) on how to address them.

My point is that I find it difficult to see the contents of the leaflet or Badenoch's subsequent comments as "vile". They also seem to be the beginning of a conversation, not conclusions.

Shudacudawuda · 02/11/2024 16:28

I'm really pleased, she'll be a strong leader and she has more integrity than any of the other options we've had in the last decade.
I think she'll give Kier a run for his money and I can't wait to see it.

Have you actually read her real life? She arrived back to London from Nigeria with a tiny amount of money and worked in McDonalds after the left wing Nigerian government ruined her country.

Here is a woman that really does stand for something in my book. We are so lucky to have her.

Sorry you feel that way. I'm a politically homeless woman. Don't really feel like my rights are exactly being supported by the current government. Unclear what any other colour of government would do to improve or worsen that position overall to be honest. But that's probably whataboutery or something.

Today I’ve heard Free Gear Kier and Rachel Thieves trotted out.

Why???

Do you genuinely feel clever for these ridiculous names? Is it a front because you don’t know how to debate otherwise?

It honestly makes you look a bit mindless. Its straight out of the a Donald Trump playbook.

Oh give over, politicians have always been given nicknames by the press.

The Labour Party isn't looking too flash atm either and neither is Starmer with his personal ratings so I guess we'll see how it goes

A YouGov poll published ahead of the result found four in 10 voters had an unfavourable view of Ms Badenoch, including 29% of Conservative voters, while Britons were more likely to think Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would make a better prime minister.

Does it matter? She is intelligent which is good, and I doubt she'll go full hog on a campaign line like the toolmaker one. I mean what use is that anyway

LBFseBrom · 02/11/2024 16:32

I have just had a read-up on Kemi Badenoch and am cautiously impressed by much of what she espouses. Not all. I cannot imagine myself ever voting Tory but do respect some Tories and would like to respect her. She is an interesting (& brave), woman, appears to have integrity and I am looking forward to seeing how she shapes up. Quite young too, 44, 45 in January, married with three children.

Let's wait and see, it is going to be interesting.

1dayatatime · 02/11/2024 16:32

@Rosscameasdoody

"It’s actually the truth. No-one here thinks that people of colour should all have the same views. But it’s a fact that politicians of colour can be useful in promoting policies that would otherwise be unpalatable"

This is a horribly offensive viewpoint. Presumably you view that "policies that would otherwise be unpalatable " to be right wing policies? In which case you are arguing that people of colour should have the same views.

Alternatively if you think that this applies equally to left and right then the "skin colour" effect would cancel each other out.

Personally I think the left prefer to keep seeing people of colour as opposed victims rather than successful individuals getting to senior office on their own merit and attributes.
