The risk to Labour from Cleverly was that he might manage to bring some stability to the Tory party.

No risk of that under Badenoch.🤣🤣🤣

EasternStandard · 02/11/2024 15:03

I don't think so, are you a Labour voter or Conservative? (or both / other)

Tactical Vote for Lib Dem in the last election (which worked). But would have voted Labour.

I just think people who are paid up party members should not vote for who they 'like' in leadership elections, they need to think bigger picture and vote for who would be elected by the masses at the general election.
Most voters are in the centre.

I just think the Cleverly was the 'centrerist' candidate

I disagree. He was stodgy and low key, and lower threat to Starmer.

Badenoch will be fine with the party.

Women and minorities can have a very passionate right wing anti immigrant views and therefore they will succeed in a relevant party

Absolutely this - would also add that the white members of the party can point to these leaders as proof they are not racist so it works for both but does not ultimately bring any diversity of opinion to the party and if anything allows them to go further with their extreme opinions

@SundayBloodySunday

So you think that cultures that believe in child marriage or that women should have less rights than men are equally valid?

There are 4 states in the US that allows child marriage. The majority actually allow it at 16 years. Were you thinking of US "culture" too? No, I thought not.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/11/2024 13:50

Ok, in that case let’s compare it to when Keir Starmer was elected.

Turnout within the Labour Party when he was elected leader was 62.58 %.

Yes 62% out of an eligible electorate of 780,000 for Labour compared to 72% turnout with an electorate of 130,000 for the conservatives

Scutterbug · 02/11/2024 15:16

Not that it impacts me hugely as I think all tories are tossers, but I really struggle to see the appeal of her.

What I admire about her courageous policy, it is progressive is her commitment to designing a proper plan for integration that has been woefully lacking in the UK for decades. She plans to control the numbers of new arrivals and we might finally secure the borders. To finally deliver the wish of most British people.

I believe she is unafraid to speak her mind and she is just what this country needs.

Edited

What plan for integration is that? I haven't seen any details? All I have seen is her making divisive remarks that are going to make integration more difficult and increase racist violence on both sides:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg56zlge8g5o

Repeatedly talking about securing borders does not make it happen. The Tories have kept hammering on about this but immigration under them was much higher than under Labour! What is she actually going to do to reduce immigration? How does she plan to support the massive benefit system, including pensions with less workers? How does she plan to grow the economy with less workers (they all want to grow the economy don't they!)? How does she plan to fill roles in essential sectors without immigrants?

'Speaking your mind' is not something to be lauded if your opinions are destructive and nasty.

Kemi Badenoch smiling

Not all cultures equally valid, says Kemi Badenoch

Tory leadership contender sets out a "hard-nosed" immigration policy at the start of the party's conference.

I assume you mean the Tories, do you remember 14 years ago when Labour left the country bankrupt and someone has had to try and sort it? Same thing that will happen in 5 years, if they last that long

Yes. I meant the Tories. I’m judging on very recent history, not ancient history.

Mercurial123 · 02/11/2024 15:18

She's just awful. Her voting record says it all.

Incredible news, I am delighted!
First black female party leader.
The conservatives have given themselves the best possible chance of winning, she is strong, intelligent and has the backing of the whole party.

The backing of the whole party. Really?

Beekeepingmum · 02/11/2024 15:18

Drinkdrinkduuurink · 02/11/2024 14:51

She comes across as very tough, Thatcheresque dare I say.

The Tories have had four female leaders, Labour none. Quite amazing considering how each party is perceived .

Not sure Truss counts. I'd probably stick to quoting 3.....

We all know that was a dog whistle to Reform voters. It worked.

Dont let the bullies get to you Lihaaf.

Who are you referring to?

rainingsnoring · 02/11/2024 15:19

Dog whistle to racist Tory party members which did indeed work. Look where we are!

She's united the nation! Hooray!

They’ve only had the chance to have so many female leaders as they can’t stick with one leader for more than 18 months or so these days. Thatcher being the exception of the last forty years.

May’s card was marked from within from the moment she was elected. And god only knows why Truss was chosen in the first place.

JaneEyreLaughing · 02/11/2024 15:21

Cornflakes44 · 02/11/2024 14:46

@JaneEyreLaughing sorry I forget. Yes she's also racist,

Well, there you have it! proof, if proof were needed, of the absolute blind silliness of the supporters of The Son of the Toolmaker!

Dear oh dear-the worm is eating its own tail as so often happens with the far left.

Because those Tory party members with the vote didn’t want Sunak.

40somethingme · 02/11/2024 15:27

Some highlights from her voting history :

Generally voted against fewer obstacles for access to abortion
Consistently voted against improving environmental water quality
Consistently voted against improving air quality
Generally voted against measures to prevent climate change
Consistently voted against improving biodiversity
Voted for mass surveillance of people’s communications and activities
Consistently voted against stronger fire safety measures
Consistently voted against landlords paying for the costs of building safety works
Generally voted for increasing the state pension age
Almost always voted against a right to remain for EU nationals already in living in the UK
Consistently voted for higher taxes specifically to fund health and social care
Consistently voted against higher taxes on banks

but I guess she knows what a woman is so that makes it ok…

Did you miss her recent comments on maternity rights?

Did you miss them in full or only take the daily mail abridged version that misquoted her?

Cornflakes44 · 02/11/2024 15:28

@JaneEyreLaughing do you think that people of colour can't be racist? That just isn't true. Also you really know nothing about my politics. You don't have to be particularly left wing to see her for what she is.

JaneEyreLaughing · 02/11/2024 15:29

ilovesooty · 02/11/2024 15:18

The backing of the whole party. Really?

Do you know that The Son of A Toolmaker was made leader of the Labour party with 56% of the vote?

Kemi received 57% of the vote to be Conservative leader.

So, you and other posters like you, who are sneering that she did not get everyone's vote and won't therefore to be able to unite the Conservative Party, must also accept that by your own reasoning, The Son of a Toolmaker, has even less right to lead the Labour Party.

Kemi got a bigger share of the vote to lead her party than the Son of a Toolmaker got to lead Labour.

I'll get the popcorn while you twist and quiver, explaining that it is not the same thing at all!😂
