Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

There’s got to be some perks to the shittiest job in the Kingdom.

The hypocrisy of this, in the context of VAT on school fees, is staggering. When parents of kids with SEN have raised the point that their child really struggled in a state school and has only been able to thrive in private, Labour's response has been 'well, what about all the kids with SEN who don't have the luxury of that choice?' The exact same is true here. There are thousands of kids in this country who don't have a quiet space to revise, because of unsuitable housing or difficult family circumstances - they don't all have a millionaire pal to lend them a spare room to revise in. How very DARE Starmer lecture private school parents about using their privilege to gain a better education for their children when he is doing precisely the same thing.

Worse than staggering- it reaffirms the one rule for us and another for the povvos.

If only that had been said earlier they'd be less likely to be hoisted by their own petard

TheUniversalsHere · 25/09/2024 18:36

I think the one media snippet that 'got' me in the last few days was Starmer apparently saying some months ago he was affected by rising mortgage rates as he had just come off a fixed rate like many of us, and he spoke of Sunak's lack of understanding for those struggling to meet higher payments last year, yet according to a media report has paid off said mortgage in full on his £2m London house come September 2024. I just don't like the pretence to be a man of the people when he clearly is minted and doesn't have the same struggles or live a life anything like that of the majority. But a lot - if not all - politicians do this. His son being able to access a quieter place to study and a notional value attached... I am a little (more) meh. I think this stuff will tarnish his image if it carries on though?

TizerorFizz · 25/09/2024 18:37

He was leader of the opposition making over £400,000 a year. Most consider that a reasonable “perk”.

Plus he’s now got Chequers, free cars, free lunches, free flat in central London, massive pension and exit payment, no heating bills, no council tax and still people think he needs more? The PMs salary is a fraction of what he gets. It is totally misjudging the feelings of the nation to take more and more when he spoke out about others doing exactly this.

caringcarer · 25/09/2024 18:38

He could have rented a cottage somewhere for his family but he prefers luxury penthouses. I can't believe he tries to blame his son for having his own snout in the trough. I wonder if he'll blame his daughter next?

Every time he's questioned he sounds so petulant and put upon

Blaming someone else

Why can't his son study at home?

Many kids study in local libraries.

You were relatively rude to another poster. Labour supporters aren’t very comfortable unless they feel they occupy the moral high ground, which isn’t looking very plausible. Respectfully, I think your mock indignation is laughable.

I wasn't rude, I was factual.

I will step away. But my indignation isn't "mock", just born from frustration. I have terminal cancer and only a few months to live so I do tend to get a bit upset when stuff like this is latched on to when there are so many more important issues people could get worked up about and it makes me sad that people are so entrenched in their opinions that they cannot see any other side. But that's my problem, not yours.

usernother · 25/09/2024 18:42

I'm no fan of Starmer but I think this is fine, given his job.

Londonmummy66 · 25/09/2024 18:44

My daughters went to a school where there were a lot of girls living in overcrowded accommodation with lots of younger siblings. They all used to go to their local public library to revise in peace and quiet. Believe it or not Keir you can find quite a lot of free and quiet pubic libraries to study in in London.

I too have been factual. I’m pleased you have firmly grasped what is being said by others. We do not have to agree. Again, respectfully, your cancer treatment doesn’t have much to do with this thread and could be seen as trying to occupy moral high ground. I wish you well with your treatment.

Is it rude to check the person commenting understands what is being said? You appeared to be suggesting others were misunderstanding/misinformed - when that plainly isn’t the case.

Thank you 80s.

gloriagloria · 25/09/2024 18:56

I think the key here is notional. Presumably someone let him use a property that was empty - didn't just give him £40,000. It's like when my house was being renovated my friend let me stay in hers while she was on holiday. That is "notionally" around £800 worth of holiday accommodation, but actually, while very kind, it cost her nothing and I repayed her by watering her plants and about £30 worth of thank-you gifts.

I accept £20k Ritz Hotel vouchers, shall I fling you my address and email?

SlothOnARope · 25/09/2024 19:02

I'm still delighted to see the back of the Tories.

Labour know this, and so will continue to take the piss for the next four years.

Everyone is too busy celebrating the back of the Tories to stop and look at what is actually happening.

Exactly. Same with the Manhattan penthouse.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 25/09/2024 19:05

What really grates about all of this is that Starmer has a complete blind spot when it comes to the disruption he is causing to the education of children who may have to leave their schools mid-year due to the timing of the VAT introduction. It makes me so angry. Of course he wants the best for his child’s education but he cares not a jot for the disruption caused to others.

2k2j · 25/09/2024 19:05

I'll point out that 20k is way more than I've ever paid for a year of private schooling.

People in professional jobs in law, finance etc aren't allowed to accept any freebies these days.

One rule for Keir, one for everyone else. His kid should have revised in his bedroom like everyone else's, with noise cancelling headphones if necessary.

Yes and not even waiting for a September start. Such a hypocrite

Actually the whole thing is bogus but just that part shows how much he'll look after his own whilst twisting the damage for other dc

There is no £20,000.

You're right, there is no £20,000. But there should have been. If he needed to rent this space, he should have paid the money, instead of filling his boots with freebies.

Why can’t you berate him . The man’s a multi millionaire. He didn’t need to take hand outs. He was leader of the opposition, attacked Boris for doing similar, him and raynor have been coining it in.

its disgusting. When they then take the fuel allowance off of pensioners.

Taking the winter fuel allowance of pensioners isn't disgusting as:

  1. Those who retired from 2016 aren't entitled to it. And I know/knew some poor pensioners who suffered due to that.
  2. Very wealthy pensioners including millionaires got it automatically. And I know some pensioners who fall into this camp.
