Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

I accept £20k Ritz Hotel vouchers, shall I fling you my address and email?

Exactly. Just because there might be a vacant room in the Ritz right now - doesn’t mean I am entitled to a ‘notional’ free stay - because it wasn’t being used anyway.

If that’s the case, I’m ready to stay in whichever of the following currently has a free room- the Dorchester, Claridges, Mandarin Oriental lol. They weren’t making money on it anyway. 🙄

You're right, there is no £20,000. But there should have been. If he needed to rent this space, he should have paid the money, instead of filling his boots with freebies.

Or done what others in this thread mentioned - send them to a family member or friend including one of their friends to study/stay over.

To be fair Nu Labour under Tony Blair was just as bad. His children went to state schools but the schools he got them into were very interesting.

The flat was 'borrowed' from 29th May to 13th July this year. GSCE exams started on 9th May, and the last exam was sat on 19th June. Honestly, anyone swallowing this whole 'it was for my son' shite is either genuinely thick, or about to get a massive headache due to the cognitive dissonance they're experiencing. The fucking hypocrisy is unreal.

This.

I'm my view, it's totally misguided to say the Starmers bought their child an advantage by what they did.

Because his father was standing to become the most powerful person in the country (arguably) the media was camped on his doorstep.
That wasn't the child's doing. So his parents simply returned their child's life back to normal, to allow said child to study.

Big deal? I don't think so.

Was Starmer really “constantly besieged by the media” though? I’m finding that a bit hard to believe tbh

He was in the middle of a general election campaign to be fair so i imagine those weren't the best circumstances for his son to have quiet study time

CustardCreams2 · 25/09/2024 19:24

Since when do journalists enter your house/bedroom/any room and take pictures loudly enough to stop you studying?

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 25/09/2024 19:27

minisomum · 25/09/2024 16:41

I really hope he paid VAT on this.

Edited

😂😂😂😂

Yeah I revised at my nan's because she'd sleep all afternoon and I'd get peace, or at my parent's office on a weekend.

Every kid does it

But Starmer’s son Dudny revise at his nan’s house?

Greyyyybeornot · 25/09/2024 19:15

Yep absolutely these two points!

Not many private school parents were fooled by Labours ‘dog whistle’ policies, but it’s nice to have them affirmed with such vigour.

Justice4Friend · 25/09/2024 19:31

Starmer owes Ali a load of favours!
This guy is embarrassing.

The Election was called on May 22nd 2024.
Keir Starmer moved into Lord Alli's luxury property on 29th of May 2024 for his sons GCSEs.
16 days later his son finished his final exam on Friday 14th June
Keir Starmer stayed for a further 29 days until 13th of July

foxpillow · 25/09/2024 19:33

The problem is the conflict of interest, regardless of the reason he accepted any of the gifts.

People aren't giving him things out of the goodness of their heart, they're giving them to him because he's PM (or was likely to become PM). They are doing it because they want something in return.

Accepting gifts from donors who obviously want to influence policy is a clear conflict of interest. Doing this and claiming it's fine because you are K Starmer and a good person is worryingly naive.

The fact of accepting all these gifts - and continuing to do so despite the questions raised - is the problem. The reason is beside the point.

I could say I stole money to buy a bigger house for my son to have room to study for his exams. It wouldn't change the fact stealing is wrong.

also looks like he used Lord Alli’s penthouse for his 2021 Christmas message - despite work from home regulations

As others have pointed out, public libraries are available. But not good enough for Keir's boy.

potionsmaster · 25/09/2024 19:37

At least I'm now fully convinced that Starmer's father was indeed a maker of tools.

CustardCreams2 · 25/09/2024 19:37

Any gifts to doctors can’t be more than a token amount. Any more than that - it has to be reported to the GMC and you wouldn’t be allowed to accept it. It wouldn’t constitute professional practice.

Why being Prime Minister of the UK doesn’t command the same professional conduct I do not know.

They weren’t. Those dates are smack in the middle of the exam window. It’s here in black and white.

JRSKSSBH · 25/09/2024 17:00

Could not agree more, but also sanctimonious, vain, delusional, cruel and greedy.

Isn’t he the gift that just keeps on giving? Vile, arrogant and grabby.

Kitte321 · 25/09/2024 19:55

i really think the optics of this, following the clothes donations and Angela Rayners US trip, isn't great to be honest. Starmer has spent the last several years calling into question corruption in politics and pointing at he fingers. He ran on a promise of ‘putting politics back into the service of people’.
He looks like a hypocrite.

Portalsalways · 25/09/2024 19:57

So his position got him an educational advantage for his son. Does that mean he will be paying 20% VAT on it? To improve the education of all other children?

Just like he is insisting parents, whose positions mean they can afford the educational advantage for their children, pay 20% VAT?

Money may not have changed hands but his job is buying his children and educational advantage. Seems only fair he puts his hand in his own deep pockets and pays the 20% out.

No worries. Apologies if I jumped in.

I think a lot of people on here don't actually understand how election campaigns work...
The Labour Party (and every other political party at the same time) were literally sending out emails saying 'if you want us to win this election, send us money'. They were begging for donations because election campaigns are expensive. People donated to the Labour Party, or any other party because they want to support their ability to win that election.

Rich people who also want Labour to win the election can equally choose to donate, just like me or any other person on the Labour Party mailing list. And some supporters chose to support the election campaign with different kinds of help - clothes or a quiet house away from the press (which is recorded with a notional value assigned just like any other 'donation' would be).

Honestly, I'm really not sure how anyone can get themselves worked up about this, unless of course you're just anti Labour and being extremely disingenuous (much like the daily mail).

The only thing Labour are guilty of on this subject is appalling PR management of the story!
