Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

That it’s still bent, even if money didn’t exchange hands. Simple enough for you?

Is it necessary to be rude?

You've totally misunderstood (either accidentally or deliberately). No money was handed over, they stayed in a friend's house to give the child some peace and quiet. The house is in London and the market rate is high ( just for context I live in a semi in a suburb of London and the house next door is to let for £7500 a month) He did the correct thing in declaring it. What's the problem?

Edited

You can’t be serious. Are you asking why he declared it?? This was a freebie. And an expensive one at that. To a man who should be above sticking his hand out. And who could easily afford somewhere for his son. Or him.

Was Starmer really “constantly besieged by the media” though? I’m finding that a bit hard to believe tbh

He was all over the country during the election campaign. I imagine around his house was as quiet as it normally is.

Chersfrozenface · 25/09/2024 18:17

It was a freebie, recorded as being worth more than £20,000 in the register of MPs' interests, from a man who, by pure coincidence I'm sure, obtained access to No. 10, including an official pass.

TizerorFizz · 25/09/2024 18:17

If you are given the use of something that has a value attached, eg use of a flat or holiday house, it has a monetary value that must be declared. He would have had to pay for the flat on a commercial basis if he had not got it for free. So the value of that gift is added to everything else he’s had. I also repeat: more than anyone else who is a sitting MP. It’s shameless and not acceptable.

Not sure if the GCSE exam dates are accurate?

Waiting for people to still try and defend another obvious lie.

I expect so. It's a fib isn't it, the dates don't even match

Is it rude to check the person commenting understands what is being said? You appeared to be suggesting others were misunderstanding/misinformed - when that plainly isn’t the case.

Chipsintheair · 25/09/2024 18:19

Well, I live in the same area and I didn't have to revise for GCSEs because they're easy to get As in anyway, or were back then, but I had to work very hard for my A levels and had no space at home, too much noise, baby, adults fighting, tv blasting, etc. — just like many boys at that school (which has a high intake of poorer children from the very deprived local area) — so I simply sat in quiet spots on Hampstead Heath to revise.

Really not difficult and doesn't require £20,000. Perhaps £50 - £100 for cafe snacks if it's a rainy summer.

TizerorFizz · 25/09/2024 18:20

Also, why cannot someone who earned £404,000 when leader of opposition not pay this himself? What a total money grabber!

Or a lying, duplicitous toad. You pick!

WhineyVaginey · 25/09/2024 18:21

Really would've admired him if he"d have said "look was in the middle of a war room election situation. Spads, advisors & others coming at all times of the day & night - I needed somewhere away from home"

As it is, he's thrown his poor son under a fucking bus. My dd (this summer GCSE cohort) just said - if you're still doing intensive revision days before exams, unless you're properly clever, it's going to be a shit show.
He's an absolute thundercunt to do this to his child. And despite his "my dad was a toolmaker" shtick, shows once again he hasn't a clue about the living conditions of a great number of children in this country.
And I'm not doing the whataboutary bollox with the Tories. They're all despicable greedy opportunists.

No, I'm not asking why he declared it. That's obvious.

If you were in a situation where you needed to temporarily leave your house, for whatever reason, and a friend offered to put you up would you turn them down?

TizerorFizz · 25/09/2024 18:23

@80smonster Id go for all of them!

Labour are supposed to be for the people the Conservatives don’t even pretend to be do they and that why it seems so bad, the hypocrisy.

Except they aren’t, just ideological blaggers by the looks of things.

Well yes, it is when you say it like that. It's clear we all have very different opinions on this situation but we can surely still be respectful?

Maybe Lady Starmer AND the kids decamped there?

The flat was 'borrowed' from 29th May to 13th July this year. GSCE exams started on 9th May, and the last exam was sat on 19th June. Honestly, anyone swallowing this whole 'it was for my son' shite is either genuinely thick, or about to get a massive headache due to the cognitive dissonance they're experiencing. The fucking hypocrisy is unreal.

The Labour fans are twisting themselves into pretzels to try to explain this away. I'm sure they'd be just as understanding had it been a Tory who'd done this. 🤔😬

Chipsintheair · 25/09/2024 18:27

And yes there are libraries still open nearby. Belsize Park and Highgate as well as Kentish Town. The British Library is free to use and is a short bus ride away from the school.

Seriously, why doesn't the school provide after-school revision periods, anyway, considering so many pupils won't have internet access or space to work at home?

It wasn’t just a friend putting him up, if it was, it wouldn’t be declared. What do you think he was in the spare room ? 😂

You were relatively rude to another poster. Labour supporters aren’t very comfortable unless they feel they occupy the moral high ground, which isn’t looking very plausible. Respectfully, I think your mock indignation is laughable.

Grasping at straws more like.

potionsmaster · 25/09/2024 18:28

The hypocrisy of this, in the context of VAT on school fees, is staggering. When parents of kids with SEN have raised the point that their child really struggled in a state school and has only been able to thrive in private, Labour's response has been 'well, what about all the kids with SEN who don't have the luxury of that choice?' The exact same is true here. There are thousands of kids in this country who don't have a quiet space to revise, because of unsuitable housing or difficult family circumstances - they don't all have a millionaire pal to lend them a spare room to revise in. How very DARE Starmer lecture private school parents about using their privilege to gain a better education for their children when he is doing precisely the same thing.

Bitethehandthatfeeds · 25/09/2024 18:29

My DC sat GCSEs this year and often went to the school or public library to study in peace. Just saying.

Yes I expect they are all in a tent on Hampstead Heath singing ‘Ging Gang Goolie’.
