And I confess myself very surprised.

Kamala Harris' fundraising reaches a record-breaking $100 million since Biden's exit

So if he’s a joke politician, who’s the joke on if he wins?

Everyone in the US who cares about bodily autonomy, especially women. And immigrants . America will become a sort of Gilead and will be run by white supremacists.

The problem with fascists is that they go after everyone in the end.

Exactly. So don’t underestimate the opponent and pass them off as just a joke because that’s how you lose elections.
His first presidential run, when he first threw in his hat, he was polling at less than 1%. Everyone thought he was a joke and looked what happened. The debates changed everything.

That’s why I have said Harris need to focus on the debates and the dems need to stop idealising her. She is gaffe prone and Trump will only seize on this. Fangirling helps nobody

Shared from the Holocaust Memorial, in the words of Martin Niemoller:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.

This is not an election of swing voters. Its going to be all about turning out the base and depressing Trump’s voters. Vice versa for the Republican side.

The reason why the Democrats are pretty pleased right now is that Trump is basically at his ceiling right now. Everyone either loves him or hates him. Very few voters are waiting to learn more about him. They may or may not actually understand him and his policies (that is true for both supporters and opponents) because of the way media segmentation and balkinization structures information for voters. But whatever: everyone believes they know Trump and either buy what he is selling or reject it.

That is not true for HARRIS. Americans don’t have much memory for a previous campaign. Harris is largely unknown right now. She is at her floor but there is plenty of room to increase her vote share—her ceiling is open.

She borrows Biden’s popularity (increased popularity for clearly putting country over self) and she will get a convention boost (each party does) but she has already stepped on Trump’s assassination boost and his convention bounce.

Trump’s VP pick has been a disaster (his opinion not mine) and Harris is spoiled for choice of anodyne white guys who can serve as genial attack dogs (the traditional function of the VP pick).

The significance of all the back and forth punditing/op eds/gracious advice from each party to the other right now is best understood as a form of trash talking—each party will attempt to use the media and social media/celebrity/influencers to get the other party to make a mistake, and to depress the other party’s voters. A committed MAGA voter who fears mail in voting and thinks that his vote can’t beat blue enthusiasm is a lost vote for trump.

Don’t look for Harris or the dems to conciliate or move to the center. This is a red meat to the base campaign.

I like our chances.

Very few voters are waiting to learn more about him. They may or may not actually understand him and his policies (that is true for both supporters and opponents) because of the way media segmentation and balkinization structures information for voters. But whatever: everyone believes they know Trump and either buy what he is selling or reject it.

People know Trump as he has already been president.

The last act of that was encouraging a violent coup that killed at least nine people; he personally commented that it "represented the greatest movement in the history of our country.” I think millions of voters may not think it's important to delve into the details of his policies as if they're somehow comparable to the Dems when the potential of his presidency is so alarming.

I don't think she's underestimating him. Her first ad today was absolutely targeting him.

pikkumyy77 · 26/07/2024 00:06

Fangirling doesn’t hurt at all—do you not understand what motivates people to vote? They want to vote for the person who will fight for them. I will be very surprised if Trump ends up debating her at all—no matter what he said—but in any event Biden wasn’t the only old man on stage last time. Trump has—or had—a kind of louche style that works well for his voters at rallies. They don’t mind unscripted rambling attached to the big hits of who he is going to hurt or, recently, his great friend Hannibal lecter.,But he is not now, and never has been, a skilled debater and he is even less articulate than he used to be.

Of course Harris has to do debate prep—but what on earth is this woeful whining from mumsnet supposed to do? If you aren’t part of the solution you are part of the precipitate I mean actually you are irrelevant. You are like those people complaining that girls at a Taylor Swift convert are having too much fun. Politics is exciting! People should be excited to vote because its damned hard to vote in the US.

Absolutely agree with this! It always amazes me how many people vote with their gut and on whether they 'like' a candidate and without any real understanding of policy position etc - on both sides of the Atlantic!

SheilaFentiman · 26/07/2024 08:17

Trump has said today that he’s not going to debate Harris until the nomination is confirmed. Which would be OK if that was all he said.

But the statement banged on about Crooked Joe Biden and how Barack Hussein Obama might not support Harris who is a Marxist fraud, blah blah

Politics is a mix of policies and personalities. If they had identical policies, I would want the one who could issue a comms statement without inane insults and not very veiled racism. Who wouldn’t??

A solution is seeing problems ahead of you so you can fend them off. Not pretending they don’t exist.

You are correct I’m exactly the type of person that complains about TS fans(adults). I was there with my kids. Women in their 20s/30s screaming and crying, losing their minds. Was completely ridiculous.

This is a British SM site, expect people to tell it like it is and not to sugar coat

Don’t presume to speak for all British people, if you wouldn’t mind.

‘Telling it like it is’ in my book, is code for being offensive and rude or someone who thinks they are beneath schooling themselves on offensive terms etc.

Plumpribbon · 26/07/2024 08:33

I think you mean above teaching themselves on offensive terms

Igotjelly · 26/07/2024 08:46

Grin Well I was one of those ridiculous adults absolutely loving life at Taylor Swift so.......

Emmanuelll · 26/07/2024 08:47

I meant 'think schooling themselves on offensive terms is beneath them' clearly.

But you picking apart what I meant doesn't detract from my overall point. You shouldn't presume British people all share your opinions or 'tell it like it is'.

'Telling it like it is' is hardly a specifically British characteristic?
In my experience it usually just means someone who allows themselves be rude and obnoxious about someone who behaves or thinks differently to them.

If someone is going to be a figurehead for their nation, their character is of course of utmost importance.

I don't disagree, character and morality is vitally important but it doesn't hurt to have an understanding of key policy positions too. I think in recent years Politics has veered towards big personalities and we've somehow forgotten the mundane but important parts.

The example from the UK I was thinking about at least in part was BREXIT and how many people did little to no research at all into what the relationship with the EU meant, they simply 'fancied a change' (and I quote a close relative in saying that).

Slogans, personalities, visuals, 'appeal' have always been part of politics. A major problem with Brexit seems to have been people not knowing what they were voting for and the proponents telling lies.
In Ireland there's a Referendum Commission that needs to lay out the issues with clarity for yes and no votes - UK could do with the same tbh.
