What will labour do re: trans

I've seen some really scary stuff with Keir starmer not knowing what a woman is and an article saying they class not "affirming" someone's gender identity as conversation therapy.

This topic is extremely important (if not the most) to me right now and I'm wondering if anyone knows what they plan to do? I also saw something about them disregarding much of what was in the Cass report.

@WormBum
As it is I’m reading those words and assuming (probably correctly) that within their single sex exceptions they are meaning men with a GRC
I do think they are saying that men with a GRC can be excluded - theoretically, but that exclusion can only happen in limited situations.
It's a position that allows them to say they are protecting biological single sex spaces, while practically making most female facilities available to both sexes.

I understand that that’s what people believe, but until it’s clear Labour have proven to me that on this topic they cannot be trusted. They’ve done this before.

makeanddo · 23/06/2024 18:50

Labour are adamant that the Equality Act is adequate, saying protections are in place. However we know that many institutions are brainwashed, many don't want the hassle of excluding transwoman under the legitimate means /aims clause, many are just too scared, many think women will just shut up and if they complain they will be removed/ignored etc.

Labour will use this to push blame away from themselves and onto institutions, they will just repeat that the rules aren't being implemented properly and it's not their fault and we don't need a change.

This is why every single instance of this happening needs to be recorded and questioned.

Unfortunately I think there are too many women with, and we've seen many in here, who do not get it and think it's just about bathrooms. Once people wake up it'll be too late.

Labour is proud of our equality act and the rights and protections it afford women, we will continue to support the implementation of its single sex exceptions.

Labour said similar years ago, then soon after clarified that they were including some men when they talked about women.

There is no reason to trust their woolly, obfuscating words until/unless they can absolutely explain what they mean.

As it is I’m reading those words and assuming (probably correctly) that within their single sex exceptions they are meaning men with a GRC, with a plan to make it easier for men to get a GRC, and I’m assuming this purely on their past actions.

That's exactly my prediction too.

And that's why Labour MPs filibustered about fucking ferrets to stop Liz Truss's Bill that would have made the law clear.

Yes and the exception cited in the EA as an example is a rape crisis centre if I remember correctly. And in interviews Starmer has only mentioned these less common (but very important) settings in relation to female only spaces.

So for more "everyday" settings like a communal gym changing rooms, the law isn't clear if being single sex here is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim, the ambiguity means providers don't want to risk being sued so avoid single sex policies, and if push came to shove the incoming govt don't think such a situation should be female only.

In any case, there are at least two Rape Crisis centres refusing to provide female-only spaces, so what hope do we have for more "everyday" settings?

Very little without amendments to the EA.

Can't be the Tories. They were captured by Stonewall and Mermaids and allowed this utter shite into schools. Under their watch, Stonewall drove trans ideology into public services and businesses. Not forgetting the women sacked and visited by the police for expressing an opinion or the kids fed hormones.

If you actually bothered to read their manifesto you will see they have read the room on this issue and have made plenty of pledges:

🟢 Introduce primary legislation to clarify that the protected characteristic of sex in the Equality Act means biological sex.
🟢 Amend the NHS Constitution so that it recognises every patient’s right to request single-sex accommodation and same-sex intimate care.
🟢 Make legal gender a reserved matter to the United Kingdom, so the Scottish and Welsh governments cannot introduce self-ID.
🟢 Give parents a right to see what their children are being taught in relationships and sex education.
🟢 Implement the Cass Review recommendations, protecting young people questioning their gender from ideologically driven care and ensuring that gender provision for children in England is evidence-based.
🟢 Make the guidance for schools on gender-questioning children statutory.
🟢 Drop the previous government’s plan to ban so-called “conversion therapy”.
🟢 Legislate to permanently prevent the private prescription and supply of puberty blockers to children with gender distress.

How did you get those cool green bullet points?

Oh brilliant, thank you. Helpful to have it summarise. Knew what I’d seen sounded ok but you’ve done the graft 🙏

These look good to me. A pity we’ll be going in the other direction, likely with a large majority giving no room for pause

I think everyone should watch the Let Women Speak event in Brighton. This is where we are and it is a wake up call for everyone who thinks there isn't a problem.

Actually I've just realised that it doesn't really matter to me what the process for getting a GRC is. It's what that GRC gives a person access to that matters. That's what Labour need to clarify.

The idea you get access with a GRC isn't really the case although, since it means you get a birth certificate in your acquired gender, it does effectively allow one to be legally in their new gender. The main purpose however was always to allow people to marry and ultimately be certified dead in their chosen gender.

At present only around 2% of trans have a GRC. The rest just get by. They live amongst us without, for the most part, causing anybody the slightest raised eyebrow.

If only that were true.

We got our postal vote through today. I spoke to my husband about this and we've both just voted Reform because they seem the only party who gave a sensible opinion about this area.

I usually vote Labour so this is a massive change for us.

Your misogyny is showing.

Just putting this here for anyone thinking of voting Reform due to their position on women's rights...

Vile.

This too... of course all news sources have a political point of view, and the Guardian are unlikely to support Reform, but even so.

It wasn’t just reported in the Guardian. That’s the most informative report I think, but his views on this have been widely covered I think?
