Whatever you think of him, I can't help but think his optimism and vision is somewhat engaging?

@hamstersarse I must thank you for this thread and the entertainment and hilarity you have provided with each of your posts. I need something to cheer me up after the utterly lack of anything in the Prime Minister's speech today. Thank you again, most kind.

Tinpotspectator · 06/10/2021 19:34

His address was condemned as “bombastic but vacuous and economically illiterate” by the free market Adam Smith Institute, while the Conservative thinktank Bright Blue issued a stark warning.
“The public will soon tire of Boris’s banter if the government does not get a grip of mounting crises: price rises, tax rises, fuel shortages, labour shortages. There was nothing new in this speech, no inspiring new vision or policy,” its chief executive, Ryan Shorthouse, said.

Guardian, today.

  • Journalist: " Why are you avoiding the question..yes or no can you provide an absolute guarantee?"

You see where it goes.*

Are you really saying you accept he has to lie because the truth is unpalatable?

Honestly? @hamstersarse

The question of the British border in Ireland is not a complicated, well it depends on what you mean kind of situation. The provisions were set out in the endlessly negotiated, internationally ratified Good Friday / Belfast agreement.

The PM lied about the situation he had agreed when he said there will be no documentation required because he was talking to Unionist politicians in NI whose purpose in life is to be an integral part of the UK. They did not want any documentation to be required.

Johnson had travelled there to speak with them straight from signing the Agreement which 'Got Brexit done' by agreeing to there being documentation necessary for trade between GB and NI.

What is the point of listening go to a PM who just lies when the truth is uncomfortable? Or is the point that people give up and let them give away contracts for millions, even billions with no provisions to ensure any kind of value for money ?

@FinallyHere

I am saying that people don’t want to get involved in a grey argument. They want black and white. Yes or no. Said I’ll do it, but actually things have changed and I can’t is apparently lying in today’s climate. People do this in all sorts of situations, not just with Boris.

One thing constantly repeated about Boris is he’s racist. I think that comes from the ‘letterbox’ article?
That baffles me…he was arguing that making women cover up is not acceptable (I.e. when not by choice) . I guess if you support the Taliban, you would take offence to that, but most people wouldn’t support the enforcement of face coverings for women, even if that means criticising that particular branch of Islam.

Let me see if I understand you correctly.

You think our Prime Minister should be free to sign international agreements with no intention of sticking to the provisions he has signed up to?

Closer to home, you are happy that as ultimate arbitrator of the truth on the House of Commons, there is now no sanction for telling lies in the House?

That so long as he can sound upbeat and cheerful, invoke a few 'never since Tudor times' and throw a few ideas around, the people who voted to put him in power should be content ?

Crikey.

Can you honestly see no issue with this way of going about the business of governing the country.

I hope you are just a bot snd not a sentient being.

Franklin12 · 06/10/2021 23:06

I am listening to Starmer on Peston. Honestly he really isn’t going to do anything to dent the Tory lead. He keeps calling Boris a showman but clearly it goes down well with voters.

Come on Labour. You sound like depressing prigs lost in your own woke agenda. The UK needs a strong Opposition.

Fifteentoes · 07/10/2021 00:25

@Burnshersmurfs

I’m a single parent too- and was also on benefits for a period. I am so, so grateful to the system at the time that welcomed and supported me and gave me the chance to get back on my feet when I was vulnerable and scared. I feel- with quite a sense of certainty- that the majority of people on benefits are just like me- many of them working, a few of them needing that care and support more intensively and for longer than I did. I am so sad that this country has moved away from the compassion and understanding that once was shown to me. At that time, I was so proud of us and valued it so much. I have done well since then and know I owe a lot of that to the support I got when it was needed. Had I been ground down by the stress of poverty, constantly worried about how to manage and aware of the contempt this country now seems to feel for people like me, I doubt that success would have happened. As we are back to motivation again- punishment is way less effective than gratitude.
Wow. It's almost like you're an actual human with a brain and a functioning sense of empathy.

Sorry to burst your bubble but it ain't gonna get one.
BettyFilous · 07/10/2021 00:38

I wanted a serious prime minister for serious times. Not the class clown.

^ This.

Oldmrswasherwoman · 07/10/2021 06:50

He's a massive chancer.

If Germany or France voted in someone similar we'd find them a laughing stock.

You either know very little about Johnson's back catalogue, or maybe this is faux naivety in a deliberate attempt to downplay this type of racism which you support?

That article was one amongst other pieces cited as evidence of racism. He makes racist remarks.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 07/10/2021 08:26

Many people will have a depressing winter full of anxiety. It's OK though because the Prime Minister's speech made the OP smile.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2021 09:39

Sonex

More importantly, who the fuck cuts hair?“

Interesting how well presented he was when he met Biden. The hair is a physical representation of the blindingly obvious, to all but gullible idiots, part of the contrived “ha ha, look at what a bumbling idiot I am, even forget to brush my hair”’act.

Like Milton Jones. The comedian.

yellowspanner · 07/10/2021 13:30

Thankfully the Labour Party is too disunited to form a government within the next decade. We do, however need a good opposition and they can't even provide that.
I think the Government and Boris are doing a good job given the circumstances.
The rise in energy prices is hardly their fault. They have provided massive financial support to businesses and workers throughout the pandemic.
And Brexit needed to be done. The referendum was a legal vote and there was a majority for Brexit.

Franklin12 · 07/10/2021 13:45

Yellow, yes I tend to agree. The financial support was good for a lot of people to such an extent that some didnt want it to finish! Brexit was already agreed whether you voted for it or not. There was a clear message from the Tories during the last election and Labour were a mess. Many many ideas which just didnt make sense. A terrible terrible leader who seemed lost in his own little world and a dangers Shadow Chancellor who was going to wildly swing the UK to the Left.

The UK will never be massively left. Blair did a fantastic job of winning three elections yet Labour really dont seem to want to win. Maybe they just want to throw grenades from the sidelines. Captain Hindsight who looks like he is about to be sick, Rayner who is a disgrace to her party. Mentioning one school and calling people scum. She is a fishwife and will NEVER get into power.

And how many times does she need to say she was a single mum at 15/16. Every. Single. Time. Great decision making and surely she isnt saying follow my lead and see what you can do...

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/10/2021 13:51

No you don't.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/10/2021 13:53

She is a fishwife and will NEVER get into power.

If we're going to resort to such clichés may I say that you sound like a hysterical shrew?

Tinpotspectator · 07/10/2021 15:45

Yes the messy hair-ruffled as he waits for the cameras, according to journalists -is incredibly patronising. Why can't people see he thinks they are stupid?

Unfortunately I agree the current leader of the LP won't cut it to knock him over. He has insufficient charisma, for a start.

FinallyHere · 07/10/2021 17:35

@yellowspanner

The rise in energy prices is hardly their fault.

The rise is a direct result of no longer being part of the EU's cartel on energy costs.

So yes, very much their responsibility.

jgw1 · 07/10/2021 18:53

Not long ago dear Boris was telling the world at the UN that we all had to grow up and take climate change seriously. Could someone who was bored enough to listen to his waffle summarise the policies in his speech on this subject.

PrincessNutNuts · 08/10/2021 03:10

I can't get any petrol.

My children's schooling is being disrupted for the third consecutive academic year.

I don't find new three words bullshit slogans and crap jokes at all endearing.

I want competent government, cheers.

DoubleTweenQueen · 08/10/2021 06:57

I'll be watching Gina Miller's application to launch a new political party - True & Fair.

Its the will of the people.

And but Jeremy Corbyn.
