Whatever you think of him, I can't help but think his optimism and vision is somewhat engaging?

MrsWooster · 06/10/2021 12:32

He’s shit, and he’s popular and that’s terrifying.

rrhuth · 06/10/2021 12:32

@hamstersarse

Speeches are funny things though. The things people remember about speeches are if they made them laugh (the number 1 thing!) and the stories within them. He does do that very well. .

Can't remember anything Kier Starmer said last week. Not one thing. Maybe something about people with cervixes, but that also maybe wasn't in his actual speech.

I think this suggests you didn't actually watch the Starmer speech.

If so, and you can not remember the very moving segment about the parents whose DD was murdered, then you really are quite unusual.

Hiphopopotamus · 06/10/2021 12:33

@hamstersarse and the depressing thing is that people like you get a vote. Have some bloody standards for dicks sake and expect more of the people we put in these positions of immense power. I can direct you to some comedy clubs if you want a laugh. Join Tinder if you want someone to go for a pint with. And then vote for someone who is compassionate enough and qualified enough to hold the lives of millions in their hands.

hamstersarse · 06/10/2021 12:34

I can't understand how people get so wound up over Boris. Like fuming level wound up.

I don't feel that about Kier Starmer. I just think...bland. Feel nothing.

What is it about him that really riles people up so much?

Jungian psychology would say it is an encounter with your own shadow. highexistence.com/carl-jung-shadow-guide-unconscious/

Keir Starmer.

Because he's the Prime Minister and he's doing a SHIT job.

Stop doing the Starmer/Labour whataboutery. They're not in government.

What is it about him that really riles people up so much? I think that will be the lying and generally being a shit.

People often talk about 'liking' him, but do they, really, like people who lie and treat people badly? If so, I think there is plenty to psychoanalyse there.

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2021 12:42

I’m not a huge fan of Keir Starmer but he’s not the prime minister.

Why does a discussion of boris’ speech get derailed by talking about Keir Starmer? Have you been taking tips from boris?

hamstersarse · 06/10/2021 12:42

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

KEir Starmer (thanks @PurpleDaisies) is relevant because the people on the right do not get so wound up by him as people on the left do about Boris.

I'd encourage you to learn about your shadow because it is very relevant .

I agree OP - he is good at that kind of good moodism and enthusiasm. I’m sure the fact checkers will have a field day but comparing with Keir Starmer’s delivery last week this will make people sit up and listen and maybe even nod heads in agreement.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/10/2021 12:44

You're easily impressed by a vapid man therefore I conclude you're also vapid.

I will kindly refrain from invoicing you for this therapy session.

But next time you're voting, be a poppet and please vote for someone who's capable of doing the job.

He cones across as totally out of touch with the reality of how tough many people have it right now. Optimism is only contagious if it’s actually got some basis for feeling like that.
Sonex · 06/10/2021 12:47

More importantly, who the fuck cuts hair?!

FictionalCharacter · 06/10/2021 12:48

No. It’s false. He says whatever he thinks the Tory party’s core voters will like. And he doesn’t take his job the slightest bit seriously.

When you say 'capable of doing the job', do you think Boris does everything?

It's quite a job description if so.

People seem to have incredible aspirations for what a PM can actually do. Like they need some almighty all powerful King to sort out their lives for them

rrhuth · 06/10/2021 12:50

I am enjoying your nonsense thread @hamstersarse

What do you want from a PM then, just a sort of jolly jester alongside the Queen? I suppose that is one model. Johnson is a bit like that, as he achieves very little but keeps the masses amused?

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2021 12:50

When you say 'capable of doing the job', do you think Boris does everything?

Look at the team he has put around him. A bunch of lightweight, useless yes men.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/10/2021 12:52

Oh bless, at the very least they need to be able to appoint a competent cabinet. But he can't manage that, can he?

You're clearly a fan, how lovely for you, but Johnson should have stayed in the circle where his particular skill set (laziness and incompetence with the odd amusing remark thrown in) did least damage. As a newspaper columnist.

Because he is quite literally taking the piss out of us.

He is elected to lead the country and so far he has lined the pockets of his chums, presided over one of the worst covid death rates in the world and has absolutely no plan going forward. When asked about any of these he blusters, lies, blames others or hides.

These are the actions of a man who is enjoying the ride but couldn't give a shit about the results of his actions. Results that the UK will be picking up the pieces of long after BJ has moved on to his next jolly.

I can't understand how people think this is OK because he can waffle a bit of empty positivity.

I know we all take politics Very Seriously these days. And have very high hopes of changing things

But I just enjoyed the speech.

Thought it was funny, yes, there are worse things to be. British people do tend to take the piss - its always been part of our culture. I know the level of seriousness you display seems to be some form of assessing your morality these days, but I for one am a bit bored of having to be serious all the time.

@hamstersarse Dear God. Do you not get that his speeches are written to try and spin just enough to keep the gullible faithful on board? You were supposed to be 'engaged', and you fell for it.

Plenty of people not 'on the left' by any stretch are very much not engaged, impressed, or remotely taken in by his very cheap empty word salad.

It is possible to be angry with the PM for those who died due to mismanagement of the pandemic response; the treatment of the poor and vulnerable; the consequences of Brexit for us and future generations; the blatant lying. He is, after, responsible for the running of this country. Attributing this response to some nonsense about ‘Jungian psychology’ is a bit embarrassing, I feel- a sort of pseudo-intellectual attempt to suggest those angry lack self-knowledge. It is possible for anger to be motivated by care and compassion for others even when there is no immediate impact on oneself. It’s fairly possible to support that argument through further reading of Jung- or pretty much anybody to the left of Satan who has written anything about human motivation.

rrhuth · 06/10/2021 13:05

Oh yes, that old line - if you don't find Johnson hilarious you are a joyless individual, and also not really British, because the true British like to take the piss.

I think everyone acknowledges he appeals to a certain type of person, no one doubts that many find him amusing.
