This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

This is really a shame as I was looking forward to continuing the discussion about politics after work, having more time to read pp posts on that and more time to respond. instead we seem to have gone downhill yet again

WeSavedSallySally · 04/02/2020 22:14

In terms of thread comments someone's posts, and actually only one person's posts make me feel a variety of unpleasant emotions.

Needled, riled, attacked, defensive... And actually....quite miserable.

I really enjoy the arms threads, you know as a mum, who looks for chat, humour and support in day to day life as per mumsnet ETHOS.

I find it disconcerting when I come back to the arms I find comrades, laughter, interesting intelligent discourse on what I'm interested in.

Yet then if feel subjected to abuse by 1 poster . I report it and nothing is done.

There are so many threads across mn I could insert myself into to needle and attack and subvert.. But I'm not that way inclined and I don't see myself as a Saint who is pure enough to go and spread misery into chat groups formed on mn.

Rather like suddenly bursting into mornington crescent talking about why no one 1 cares about my relatives tragic death?

I understand that maybe they do, maybe they also have had a relative tragically die but on mornington crescent

They just don't want to talk about that sort of thing.

time4chocolate · 04/02/2020 22:17

Sally 😢 - please don't lose your shit, we are a fairly small in numbers group as it is without a deletion (and I'm probably now running a fine line myself if this morning is anything to go by😉)

Moving on, I see ET is on a webchat tomorrow, going to wander over and take a shufty at the questions.

GreenishMe · 04/02/2020 22:22

Sorry to hear about your loved one Sally

Time I think we've been catapulted into a parallel universe.. where everything is the opposite of what we think it is.

I'm going to call it a night. My brain hurts.

Hope tomorrow feels better. Night all 🤕

time4chocolate · 04/02/2020 22:41

Arse peaks and troughs, ups and downs but tomorrow is a new day and I don't expect we will be short on things to discuss.

Anyway, Adios amigos Im off to bed now as early start in the morning.

ommmward · 04/02/2020 23:15

Here's something for the morning: they'll be reshuffling the cabinet this week. What's your fantasy cabinet?

Can either do it based on reality (ie conservative MPs and whatever dodgy thing it is they do nowadays with peers) or chronologically accurate but non party specific (eg including MPs from other parties), or totally historically anachronistic (Bevan on health, maybe) or just total fantasy (captain Kirk as foreign secretary).

🙂

This thread seems to me to have lost its heart, its fun and it's comradeship?
I don't like the tone of it even though Omm you are trying to do a sterling job.
Some of us regulars are being so careful of what we say that we say nothing.
MNHQ clearly don't like us because I read other threads and the goadyness and nastiness are extreme but go uncensored. Presumably because they are all pro EU and left wing.
Is that because some of us are Tory voters?
Are Tories not welcome on MN.
I am seriously fed up with MNHQ.
Our Arms threads were not goady.
They were good fun, supportive, mainly but not exclusively, celebratory of our fine new PM, his SpAD and the government.
Yet that is seen as a problem to MNHQ.
Very disappointed in MNHQ. I feel let down by you.

Coppersulphate · 04/02/2020 23:28

Oh, and unwelcome.

ommmward · 04/02/2020 23:32

Maybe there's a better forum to go to. (Maybe all the regular armers have already gone? )

This thread seems to me to have lost its heart, its fun and it's comradeship?

I dont think we have 'lost' our heart, its been ripped out by a few posters enabled by MN. We just aren't wanted here.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/02/2020 23:35

Do you now of one ommmward?

ommmward · 04/02/2020 23:42

No, sadly not. I'll go back to reading blogs and listening to podcasts, I guess.

OP posts:
Coppersulphate · 04/02/2020 23:43

Ommm, is there another forum that we could go to where we would not be hounded out? If there is please pm me.

MNHQ have played into the hands of the left wing pro EU mob.
It is a sad day when ordinary mums who are supporting MN are no longer welcome.
Clearly they do not value us.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/02/2020 23:45

I have 'heard' a lot of MN posters are migrating to spinster which seems to be a lot less oppressive.

SilverySurfer · 04/02/2020 23:48

I wish there was another forum because although I've always known MN is left wing, the bias has increased significantly since the Referendum and they are obviously also anti Brexit. I have seen posts calling Leavers and Tories the most disgusting names, and things like fuck off Tory cunts and the posts are left standing by MNHQ.

They rarely if ever delete the goady posts and it appears it's not just the goaders who resent us having one solitary thread out of thousands, MNHQ do too. Hardly professional is it?

I too am very disappointed Copper

I said all this in my earlier thread which was deleted, so no doubt this will be too.

Miljea · 04/02/2020 23:58

Oh, come on! Where's that backbone that'll see us 'through'?

I'm a Remainer and have been deleted left, right and centre on these type of threads! And, like many on here, actually very often don't understand the 'crime' I've committed!

I can hazard a guess at the (pub-themed! 😊) closing, but note, not deleting of that thread; I suspect the sheer triumphalism was beginning to feel goady.

I think it's important to realise that at least 16m people have lost membership of an institution they believed strongly in, that they cared about.

And a few regular visitors may have become a little 'over-buoyed' by the affirmation they were getting? I dunno. I'm not MN Towers!

MN is a shared space; you should expect to be policed, as I do, if you stray too far from the tenets of MN.

We may not agree with them all, but at least, unlike the No 10 briefing where only the Right Wing press were welcome, MN do let us have our say.

But in the spirit of this, credit to those RW political journalists for walking out of No 10 in protest. They know which way acceptance of such outrageous behaviour- even if it benefits them personally- can go.

Miljea · 05/02/2020 00:06

I also think the sheer longevity and popularity of MN speaks for itself. Years ago, when it was all fields around here (I've been around since 2004!) there was an 'invitation only' alternative site for flounders.

It may still be out there, but you don't tend to hear mention of it. There's also a reddit site, then, as mentioned, 'spinster'.

But the reality is, they become echo chambers, get about 2% of the traffic MN gets- and, it does seem rather 'defeatist', seeing as Leave won, to flounce of MN!

Remain have been forced to 'suck it up', maybe those inclined towards Leave could may be tone it down on MN?

Miljea · 05/02/2020 00:07

Flounders? 🐟🐟🐟

The Frenchies will have all of them 😉

'Flouncers'.

WeSavedSallySally · 05/02/2020 00:14

Wow,'' fuck off tory cunts''? Left standing?

Wow. Mnhq?

Maybe it was depends on the un biased approach of the moderator on the day?

How do we' 'reach out' ' to moderator s manager?

I've been on here for years and found it balanced but right now somethings not right at all.

Miljea x millions of people are out of an out of control political monster they are and were deeply afraid of, one that had morphed into something no one had actually said was'' ok' 'in the UK.

Where people had lost jobs, seen income drop, lives ruined etc etc etc.

And??!

The westminders threads were Vile to anyone's who posted anything out of the strict party line and that's why we ended up with some of them in the far more welcoming arms.

But over all mumsnet is dominated by remainer threads so perhaps mumsnet isn't somewhere for mumsnet to chat and get support after all unless your the correct political allegiance?

#is Cummings coming for partisan biased mumsnet 😜

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 00:17

I suppose we could 'tone it down' by having no thread at all, then you would all be happy.

WeSavedSallySally · 05/02/2020 00:18

Leavers tone it down on mn?

All 10 of them who dare to post any more or can be bothered to?

Mumsnet that was shocked by brexit, shocked by tory win?

Echo chamber?

Miljea · 05/02/2020 00:20

I can't comment on the Tory C-nt post being allowed to stand. I didn't see it.

I guess the idea 'no one wanted the bloated monster the EU morphed into' could be refuted by 16m people positively voting for it? That's not 'no one'.

Miljea · 05/02/2020 00:23

Sally, there are still plenty of threads alive and active regarding Brexit! Hardly an echo chamber as here we are, talking in a civilised fashion although we fundamentally disagree regarding the EU!

I believe a small number of regular posters overstepped the mark; and MN wanted to take the heat out of that. The Remain threads get a slapping too, you know!

And we 'lost' 😉

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 01:18

I got called some horrendous names as I voted Tory and Leave, but it stood. Being an adult, I do not expect to be policed on the thread by other posters; it's bare arsed cheek to do so.

Funny what people manage to see or not when insults are being hurled at those who disagree with the metropolitan liberal/progressive consensus. I wear my label of 'neanderthal, knuckle dragging cunt' with pride, as evidently no cogent argument could be found to refute whatever point I was making at the time.

Politics and societies seem to be on a pendulum, they swing one way and then the other. It now seems to be swinging slightly to the Right after a long period to the left and towards the centre.

I think whichever way one voted in the Referendum, change was coming. There was no such thing as the status quo if we stayed in or left. The institutions of the EU are resistant to change, so with QMV, we wouldn't have achieved anything of significance in attempting to alter the course set by the Lisbon Treaty. I did not want ever closer union. I note that some countries in Schengen have reintroduced borders, and afaik, they are still up.

Posters complain about the calibre of UK politicians....what about that of those leading the EU? UvDL was the worst Defence Minister Germany had seen in a while, and is under investigation iirc for awarding dodgy contracts. She has removed evidence of this. If she can't run a ministry, how can she run the Commission? Charles Michel couldn't keep the federal govt in Belgium together, and the country is divided economically and linguistically as much as it ever was. Borrell is off to fiddle in the Balkans...let's hope he doesn't set a match to the kindling there. I don't know if those three were the best candidates, compromise candidates after much horse trading by the Council, or the least worst options. I suspect the latter. Add in Lagarde at the ECB and you have the makings of the perfect mess. I bet the IMF are glad to see the back of her and become the IMF again, as opposed to the EZMF.

SilverySurfer · 05/02/2020 01:36

Yes Miljea like this one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3810220-happy-brexit-day Please read that and then come back and tell us to tone it down.
