This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

Precisely Silvery The Arms has been a haven of courtesy in comparison to that.

GreenishMe · 05/02/2020 07:17

Morning all. Hope things feel a little brighter this morning, although I suspect not.

Sally, there are still plenty of threads alive and active regarding Brexit! Hardly an echo chamber as here we are, talking in a civilised fashion although we fundamentally disagree regarding the EU!

The other Brexit threads have never been comfortable places for us to comment on, which is why the Arms became so dear to us. It was the only place we could chat freely without verymuch unpleasantness directed towards us. Other than a few posters from other threads who made a point of flitting in and out to leave negative and/or goady posts, this thread was always light-hearted and fun. As you already know Miljea, you were one of those posters. I'm not saying this to start a fight.. there's no point, but there's also no point in ignoring the elephant in the room. I've mainly lurked but I've seen a lot and, honestly, this is the most reasonable I've ever seen you and Darkly behave on this thread. So I don't understand why it couldn't always have been like this?

Anyway, I need to get to work. Perhaps the remaining regulars could leave a message on here if they migrate to another place? I'll keep popping on occasionally to see what's happening, if anything.

Have a good day everyone. I've turned the coffee machine on Brew

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/02/2020 07:40

I lurk on FWR a lot, posts are very harshly moderated at times, loads of stuff people cant say, you have to really check your posts, goady fuckers
Seem to be able to post with impunity, people have been deleted for Biscuit ‘yawn’ and ‘bless’, what you can be deleted for changes in moderation policy with no warning and 3 strikes means you can be banned

And at least you can talk about cheese...put a recipe on FWR and all fucking hell breaks loose

Every 5 fucking minutes there are people complaining that FWR (in its current form) exists at all

But many posters on there believe that what they are saying is important...so they ignore the goady fuckers and they think about their posts and they don’t use the words that they know they will be banned for

Its difficult, but I suppose its what you think is important

All i know is that no random fucker on the internet is going to make me leave a forum i dont want to leave....

(Apologies to anyone currently on the FWR threads and knows this in detail)

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 07:55

I am posting this in the spirit of helpfulness and have name changed to do this. Wasn't sure whether I should, but here goes. It's not your point of view that's a problem. We are all different and have individual opinions. It's the way SOME posters of the Arms threads make personal attacks on anyone with a different viewpoint. Personal attacks are very much against MN rules. As long as you don't attack anyone, you can say more or less anything.
Read this thread from the beginning and watch the way one poster was rounded on yesterday. First by one poster and then by others. You all seem baffled why the previous thread was closed but I imagine it was for the same reason. Do you really not see this?

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 07:57

All i know is that no random fucker on the internet is going to make me leave a forum i dont want to leave....

I’m with you there Rufus but the inconsistency is extremely frustrating.

Anyway, leaving this here because I can’t find anything else yet at this early hour to post. Fair warning, It’s from across the pond and features the ‘orange one’ for anyone who finds it a bit too early😉Looks like we aren’t the only country with Politicians that can act like school children😮

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/state-of-the-union-trump-hails-the-great-american-comeback-11926613

I think posting about US politics is OK?😉

BaileysforBreakfast · 05/02/2020 08:18

He started it! Did you see her reach out to shake his hand and he totally ignored her? However, her tearing up the speech was very disrespectful. They are both ridiculous.

There's a large group of women in the audience, all dressed in white, who were making some sort of hand gesture (around 1.19). Does anyone know who they are/what the gestures meant?

You can tell from the expressions of the audience that USA is as divided as the UK. Sadly, their leader, like our own, is unlikely to heal breaches - too busy being immature and theatrical.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 08:35

In all fairness and not to keep banging on about it but you can’t look at these two threads in isolation Baileys there is A LOT that has gone on prior to that (over 4 years!) you may have been here all that time I don’t know. There are a handful of posters that like to stalk around in the guise of ‘discussion’ and it gets extremely tiresome and nothing appears to be done about it. We all have different opinions but some apparently seem to be more worthy than others.

Taken from another thread last night:

I think the pub's been closed down ....

The Westminster arms has now gone the way of the Brexit arms. It's now the Politics arms smile

An low and behold said poster of the above, not a few minutes later pops in to delight us with a one liner referencing some thing from three threads ago - then doesn’t add anything else to the discussion - goady no??

MN need to be consistent and on the fence when they make decisions on deletions not skewed which is how things appear at the moment. But I will leave it there now.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 08:39

I have no idea who the ladies in white are either or what the hand gesture means - I’ll have to do some further digging on that see if I can find out.

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 09:06

It's the way SOME posters of the Arms threads make personal attacks on anyone with a different viewpoint. Personal attacks are very much against MN rules. As long as you don't attack anyone, you can say more or less anything.

The thread was locked because MNHQ thought it was started under false pretences, and it was purely a big goad from me as the OP.

For the record, I have never personally attacked another poster.
I expressed frustration with one or two posters but did not make personal attacks.

For clarity: the thread was locked & pulled because MN decided I was a goady-fucker, that's it.

I think the moderation is inconsistent, I think there is bias shown, I think some posters only posted on that thread to try and provoke discord & a bunfight & I think that the MN rules are a perfect underpinning for trolls to flourish.

Those are my views.

However, MN is as it is & I have to respect their moderation decisions & abide by their instructions if I wish to remain a member of the forum so it really doesn't matter a jot what my views are at the end of the day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Morning everyone btw Brew

TheSultanofPingu · 05/02/2020 09:15

time4 I did reply to say I wouldn't mention my thoughts on 'code words' again, and I didn't (until now), yet here you are calling me goady.
I made my point quite pleasantly that I didn't like that aspect of these threads and was jumped on for it.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 09:20

Morning Dusty 😘 - so pleased to have you back. That was certainly some weird s*t yesterday.

I hope it hasn’t put anyone off posting (although I can fully understand if it has😢).

I was very remiss this morning and jumped straight in without a good morning or anything - where are my manners Brew Brew

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 09:21

I know you are not directing that at me Sultan, but re 'code words' - for the avoidance of any doubt I have never used any of those words either

(Just keen to set the record straight to avoid history being re-written in retrospect)

Songsofexperience · 05/02/2020 09:27

Morning all (thanks for the nice comments on the previous thread btw)
In my - polite- quest to hold the government to account, I think this is completely the wrong approach and not one iota better than the biais of which they kept accusing the Remain establishment:
(Downing Street to Foreign
Office) directive continues: “On 31 December 2020 we will either leave the transition period with a Canada-style free trade agreement’ or the ‘2019 deal’ which will give us a trading relationship with the EU like Australia’s”.
They were told: “Do not use phrases such as ‘deal/no deal’.”

They should call a spade a spade and not manipulate the narrative. We are not children. We can tell that no deal is the absence of a deal. Why the ridiculous euphemisms?
If the no deal scenario (apologies, Clean Break) is good, then why hide it under layers of Orwellian new speak?
If brexit is to be successful at all, we need transparency and that should not even be a question in my view.

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 09:27

Was just highlighting a point Pingu in relation to an earlier OP. There is a lot I don’t like on the ‘other’ thread ‘musical notes’, ‘scroll on by’ etc so I don’t post. Two wrongs don’t make a right I know but you can’t make a comment on this thread and then turn a blind eye on the other. You don’t like reading it on here and I don’t like reading it on there so I don’t tend to bother with it.

Anyway I’m moving in.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/02/2020 09:28

This will no doubt be my last post on here

(She says 😳 i admire my own optimism)

But for the record i thought dusty did her very best as landlady..i dont think she intended the thread to be goady and i cant see how she was goady

And i think it was desperately unfair to blame her for it

Have a good day all

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 09:31

They should call a spade a spade and not manipulate the narrative. We are not children. We can tell that no deal is the absence of a deal. Why the ridiculous euphemisms?

Agree

This is in the same vein as being so pissed off with the ubiquitous spin in MSM that so many people just started watching BBC Parliament direct I think.

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 09:33

Morning, all,

I enjoyed these threads because of the companionship, the exchange of views and information, and - yes - the memes and jokes.

I find the application of the guidelines really confusing even though I have asked for advice and guidance. Still. We are where we are.

We really have two choices here. Carry on doing our utmost to move forward and try to preserve something valuable to many of us, or be dragged under by a few.

For the moment, I just want to say - stay calm. I haven't gone anywhere either.

And Rufus, thank you for what you said. You speak the truth. I hope your day is good too.

TheSultanofPingu · 05/02/2020 09:33

I don't like it on any thread time4
It's unpleasant and childish.
But I agree, time to move on.

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 09:38

❤️ to Rufus - thanks xx

Brew 💐 to Sultan - I'm up for moving on too

Hola Lily 😍😍
(And everyone else!)

time4chocolate · 05/02/2020 09:40

Sultan 👍🏻Brew

Morning Lily 😘

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 09:41

FWIW, I think "Australia-type deal" is Managed No Deal with a false moustache.

Buongiorno, Dusty, and everyone else!

SingingLily · 05/02/2020 09:41

Kalimera, Time4!

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 09:50

Baileys She signed off on his impeachment and was in the forefront of the charge for it to happen as well iirc. I wouldn't have shaken her hand either.

Coppersulphate · 05/02/2020 10:11

Morning all,
Let's try again, although I stand by what I said last night.

I think Nancy Pelosi was extremely rude tearing up the speech in front of the world's cameras.
I am absolutely not a fan of Trump but I think she "lowered" herself and the Democratic Party by that behaviour. What happened to "you go low, we go high".
She had the moral high ground and lost it by that act.
Whatever you think of the man, you respect the Office.
