This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

The SNP are really throwing their dummies of the pram over the NHS vote at the minute. Its English only MPs voting and the SNP appear to be forcing their way into the divisions to disrupt the votes. They are also wearing some 'offensive' clothing but I cant make out what exactly that is.

scaryteacher · 04/02/2020 18:05

Walking You could say 'Oh Jeremy Corbyn' perhaps?

I couldn't work out why the last thread was goady, or who reported it. I suspect it was someone who has something to do with bottoms. I don't quite know who died and made them the thread police anyway. I don't go on remainer/Labour threads (well, I might read, but don't normally comment), and I can't see why the same courtesy can't be shown on threads populated by posters who are Leavers/Tories.

MrsSnippyPants · 04/02/2020 18:06

I was enjoying the discussions of current politics and was quite happy to ignore those who wish to rehash the arguments over the referendum and the most recent election.

Those two events are now immutable. This is beginning to remind me of another board, where we are not allowed to use certain terms or even allude to things we know to be facts. Please keep me informed of the 'special rules' so I can waste even more time dancing around what most of us would call 'the bleeding obvious'.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/02/2020 18:12

goady : "something totally outrageous that ends up being funny, but also stupid and gross."

I have reread the other thread but cant see what was so totally outrageous, funny or stupid and gross to shut it down.

Maybe its not possible for left wing socialists and centre right wing democrats to discuss politics calmly without emotional reactions.

time4chocolate · 04/02/2020 18:12

I think a lot of us are sitting here watching and waiting for guidance Hate

I have reread, not the whole thread again, but all the posts from today and several political aspects were discussed and there was some discussion going back and forth between all and then MNHQ jump in and curtail it. I now don’t know what is acceptable to post and what isn’t. I feel that I can’t post and actually don’t want to. It’s suppressive.

I don’t think mumsnet have helped the situation at all today, In fact I would go as far as saying it’s actually made things worse.

Massively disappointed.

scaryteacher · 04/02/2020 18:26

Agree about the CAA Hate I don't think being out of EASA will be any great loss.

Arseaboutdarkly · 04/02/2020 18:30

I couldn't work out why the last thread was goady, or who reported it. I suspect it was someone who has something to do with bottoms. I don't quite know who died and made them the thread police anyway

For pity's sake, learn a lesson

Arseaboutdarkly · 04/02/2020 18:31

Still waiting for some clarification from the H of Q on what is ok to discuss here and what's not

ommmward · 04/02/2020 18:34

Landlady here

I do not really understand why the last thread was halted either; I thought dusty did a lovely job as landlady.

My hope is that my op will help us if someone comes on the thread to try to rerun the 2016 referendum again... Of course I hope and expect that we can talk about what's happening in politics now!

And I really hope we can all manage not to respond to posters whose aim is to shut down discussion by goading and derailing.

If I had had more time to reflect on writing a good op, I would say something about "this pub welcomes people with an optimistic outlook on current politics" but I only thought of that later.

Basically, please do post, please use the report button when people come in to be horrid, please refrain from being horrid back, and we might survive for a whole thread without getting halted!!

One can only assume that the 'decision-makers' are discussing it as no swift advice is being given.

MN - don't stress yourselves out about this, it is possible that you acted in 'haste' rather like a poster who may have posted without much aforethought and got their post deleted - it's not a biggie in the great scheme of things.

Generally, I find most that post around here are quite a forgiving and realistic bunch so, I think it would be generally understood that you were just having a 'moment' - which we all can have.

That's my advice anyway - if the 'reality' differs from my assumptions would you please be kind enough to please provide some advice, guidance, 'licencing laws' or similar that we can follow?

It's your Forum and You're in Charge so it's up to you, not for members to speculate on.

scaryteacher · 04/02/2020 18:40

Trying not to respond Omm. Sitting very firmly on my hands from the posts above yours.

time4chocolate · 04/02/2020 18:42

Still waiting for some clarification from the H of Q on what is ok to discuss here and what's not

Well going by the last thread It would appear the following can't be discussed:
Press/ Dominic Cummings /BBC
Tories
Anything remotely Brexit related
The EU budget
The Labour leadership

Doesn't leave much really.

I do think we are pretty safe with cheese though😉

Arseaboutdarkly · 04/02/2020 18:47

ommward, since you were the one who directly asked me to respond to you on the other thread surely your comments above aren't directed at me?

I really don't see how current politics can be discussed without referring at all to any of the events that led us to where we are now. it's not a case of re-running or re-hashing, it's analysis.

ommmward · 04/02/2020 18:48

I think we can discuss all those things, time4chocolate, but if anyone is making snippy personal remarks, being goady or derailing then report report report and otherwise sit on hands.

Discussion of cheese, current politics (Brexit related and otherwise), labour leadership, all the Dom's, all welcome as far as I am concerned

Xx

Oh no, not cheese, brings me out in a rash...

What? Not even Wensleydale..?!

SilverySurfer · 04/02/2020 18:50

Watching BBC Parliament, I see the SNP are throwing their dolls out of the pram over the NHS Funding Bill. Deputy Speaker is doing a good job.

Scary I don't have access to all of that article but frankly the EU don't seem to have cottoned on to the fact that we are no longer obliged to comply with their rules. No doubt they will eventually get the message.

HateIsNotGood · 04/02/2020 18:53

What i really wanted to post:

Is yes, I've been a 'watcher' of BBC Parliament (Live not a recording - always check the banner) for quite some time since I happened upon it a few years ago to find MPs debating The Issue that was defining my Family's Life at The Time.

It was quite extraordinary - and yes what they were debating 10 yrs ago did help change things a bit; children with ASD do have more legal rights, recognition and provision than they did 10 years ago - although a bit is just a little shave better than The Nothing of before, at least for the Primary ages in the far SW.

Yep - fully admitted, fully-fledged geek here.

SilverySurfer · 04/02/2020 18:53

White stilton for me please.

ommmward · 04/02/2020 18:54

Oh, white stilton WITH CRANBERRIES.

I must take a look at what the SNP are doing...

OP posts:
Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/02/2020 18:57

Maybe we will have to use different types of cheese as code words to refer to different political issues.

scaryteacher · 04/02/2020 18:59

Silvery See below.

Brussels negotiators are seeking to lock Britain into European Union rules on climate change as tensions rise over a future trade deal.

The bloc wants Britain to sets up an independent watchdog to ensure it sticks to green commitments and it called on the UK to remain as part of its carbon trading market.

Boris Johnson has repeatedly rejected demands to follow EU regulations as part of a deal, but Michel Barnier has said that so-called level playing field guarantees are “inextricably linked” to striking an agreement.

The UK's Committee on Climate Change already monitors progress in reducing emissions and reaching targets. The Government would be expected to report such data to Brussels after Brexit, according to the EU's negotiating mandate.

If targets accepted when the UK was a member state or future agreed goals are not reached, Britain could face punitive measures from the EU - including fines or even the temporary suspension of market access.

The EU wants Britain to consider becoming an associate member of its Emissions Trading System (ETS). The ETS, the world’s largest carbon market, works by setting a cap on emissions and requiring industry to hold a permit for each tonne of carbon dioxide emitted.

Unused permits can be traded for cash on the market. Member countries are given carbon allowances, which provide revenue when sold to polluting companies.

But membership requires an acceptance of the EU’s rules and close ties to EU climate policy after Brexit. The Government has not yet decided on a course of action, and a carbon pricing consultation is set to be published in due course.

Other options could be to set up a UK only carbon market, join another carbon market such as California’s, or introduce a carbon tax.

Before the withdrawal agreement was ratified, Britain made no-deal Brexit plans to replace ETS membership with a carbon tax. Campaigners described the proposals as “woefully inadequate”.

The proposed tax was a flat rate of £16 per tonne of carbon dioxide for 2019. This would have reduced the incentive for polluting companies to switch to greener technologies compared with the higher ETS rate, which is currently £19.66 per tonne and can fluctuate.

The UK already has United Nations commitments to combat global warming as part of the Paris Agreement. France is understood to be among the most bullish in pushing for the strict green rules to apply to Britain, and for climate change commitments to be part of all new EU trade deals.

Mr Johnson has vowed to cut British emissions to net zero by 2050, which the EU also hopes to do.

The UK set out its plans on Tuesday to launch the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow in November with the announcement it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035.

But the Government's commitment has been questioned by the woman who was appointed by Mr Johnson to head the summit before she was fired last week.

Claire Perry O'Neill, a former Tory minister, told the BBC's Today programme to get any promises from the Prime Minister on climate change "in writing".

HateIsNotGood · 04/02/2020 18:59

Arse what is your view on the education or, as is more often the case, the exclusion from education of primary-aged children with 'higher-functioning autism?

What would be your solution at a grass-roots level? How would you approach this from a non-politically partisan viewpoint?

Arseaboutdarkly · 04/02/2020 19:04

If I had had more time to reflect on writing a good op, I would say something about "this pub welcomes people with an optimistic outlook on current politics" but I only thought of that later

But the idea of MNHQ choosing you to start a new thread was that you might be more Non Partisan so implying that only those with an 'optimistic' (favourable) outlook on brexit/government are welcome wouldn't fit that description

time4chocolate · 04/02/2020 19:06

although a bit is just a little shave better than The Nothing of before, at least for the Primary ages in the far SW

Different part of the Country Hate but with you there. I could fill a whole thread all by myself on that particular issue.
