Second EU referendum. How would you vote?

JasAnglia94 · 11/07/2017 19:09

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I hear this statement made over and over again - that people would "vote differently if we had a EU referendum today". Would you though? Hmm

I was REALLY on the fence re. the referendum. I'm 23 and from a comfortable middle-class background.

In short, I think there is a surplus of people competing for jobs - both at graduate and service level - and that the situation is exasperated by free movement. I also think the problem of housing is made worse by free movement; that there isn't enough housing for people at the middle-lower end of the pay scale and that the number of people in this bracket is ever increasing.

However, I voted to remain last minute (after much persuasion). This was due to economic and environmental reasons. I don't trust the current government with environmental policy and I don't think price rises and fewer jobs (or jobs at lower pay) will help people like me. Confused

Would I vote differently now? No. However, I would definitely be more on the remain side than the leave (e.g. my shopping bill depresses me!). Sad

Was anyone else who was on the fence vote differently now?

RandomlyGenerated........I am not living with the ongoing fallout with Brexit?............Whaaaaaaat..have you seen the exchange rate, you have no idea how much my income has gone down............ what has paying my full whack of taxes got to do with anything........It gives me as much right as you or any one else to comment and have an opinion about what happens in "my Country." Even though I don't live there at this time.

RandomlyGenerated · 16/09/2017 12:18

Yup, you're living with the exchange rate. It's great to say "get behind the country" from the a nice little retirement place in sunny Spain, but it's not the same for those of us in the UK trying to run a business and support the economy and having to deal with the shit show that is May's government.

Pensionista · 16/09/2017 12:39

I agree with you about May's shit government, and yes I am living with the exchange rate, but I am not moaning about it because it serves no purpose. I am sorry you are trying to run a business and support the economy, and no it's not the same as me living in a nice sunny retirement place in Spain, but I f....ing earn't it and it's not my fault that you are struggling. You still don't know what the future holds, hey you might even be wrong and your business might really do well and prosper. But hey feel free to carry on moaning in the meantime. I'm sure that will really help you to "Live long and prosper"

Theworldisfullofidiots · 16/09/2017 12:53

Personita the problems is you are so patronising. You aren't living here with thus problem. Brexit so far has been crap for me as businesses pull out of their commitments. Cost my business ££££.
So by all means patronise from your sunny place in Spain having voted for something that will largely not affect you.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 16/09/2017 13:00

Would still vote leave, I believed then and I believe even more strongly now that the EU won't exist in a few years and it's not because we are leaving but due to the imbalances between the remaining countries, both economic and cultural.

Pensionista · 16/09/2017 13:11

Theworldisfullofidiots......patronising ??? that's really rich coming from you. You can't even get my name right. For the trillionth time I VOTED TO STAY IN. It's NOT MY FAULT YOUR BUSINESS IS SUFFERING....It's not my fault the British Government is shit. Perhaps if you worked harder to increase your business instead of spending your time on here it might improve.
IT DOES EFFECT ME, my income which I also worked ruddy hard for has dropped considerably, sorry I am in a sunny Country suffering the effects of Brexit, what the f...king weather has to do with anything beats me.....Oh perhaps I'm responsible for that to........Where are you magic weather wand some one needs our help

Theworldisfullofidiots · 16/09/2017 13:17

Do you know I work seven days a week. Not sure I could fit more in. Sorry I've taken lunch off. Must try harder - better not sleep

RandomlyGenerated · 16/09/2017 13:17

Pensionista I like the way you assumed the business is struggling - it's not by the way, but living in the UK with the current level of chaos is just a bit shit. We are still here because we have school age kids, but our business can be based anywhere. However, if things continue as they are we will certainly leave, as many friends and colleagues have already done so - if and when we do we won't be hypocritical enough to be telling people in the UK to get behind their country though. Fortunately we have second passports, not everyone will have that option open to them.

Pensionista · 16/09/2017 13:49

RandomlyGenerated.......Hypocritical ??? Do you even know what that means ? ...."Fortunately we have second passports"..... and you call me hypocritical You like the way I assumed business is suffering.....whattf, you have done nothing but moan how it's effecting your business. Reasonable assumption I would think. Has it ever occurred to you I want the UK to do well, my family live there, like you they have school age kids to, but unlike you, are unable to leave (not having second passports) All I have ever said is despite all the shit going on it serves no purpose to continue to moan because no one knows what's going to happen, oh except those with crystal balls. I have every right as you do to, to voice my opinion about the UK and the British people, Why ? Because I am British. I am done discussing this with you now, it's blatently obvious we are never going to agree, because some people are jealous of the fact I retired to the sun. Good luck with your "second passport" I'm keeping my "British one" have a nice day.

feedyourhead · 16/09/2017 13:54

Haha I'm bewildered by the fact that the wind and tides won't respect our decision to leave the EU. That's the funniest (and least scientific) reason I;ve seen yet for staying in.

It was a leave for me last time and would be a leave again. I'm completely against federalisation and centralising national powers with vile egoists like J-PJunck - er. No thanks. Smacks of USSR to me and having lived all over Europe, let me tell you the advantages you think you get as a prole are insignificant to the disadvantages that you don't see.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 16/09/2017 13:59

I wouldn't vote.

We shouldn't have a second referendum. We shouldn't have had the first one. It's been nothing but a clusterfuck so far and such a decision shouldn't have been left to the public.

Peregrina · 16/09/2017 14:22

Personally I don't have much time for our own vile egotists - Johnson, Gove, Fox, Davis, Redwood being just five names which immediately spring to mind.

allegretto · 16/09/2017 14:27

I believed then and I believe even more strongly now that the EU won't exist in a few years .

I really find this baffling. Why leave if according to you we won't be in the EU in a few years anyway? We could have saved a lot of money and work!

JaneEyre70 · 16/09/2017 14:36

I voted leave and would do exactly the same again.

RandomlyGenerated · 16/09/2017 14:36

Pensionista of course it would be hypocritical of me to fuck off out of the UK and simultaneously tell the UK to pull together to make Brexit work. I haven't moaned about how Brexit is effecting [sic] my business - I will moan that the current useless government makes effective business planning hard though. Most of the family took up the second passport as a direct result of Brexit to keep our options open (and as it happens will make EU based contracts easier).

And no, not remotely "jealous" of you retiring to Spain or wherever - we could have done that years ago easily enough, prefer to keep working and stacking up the kid's nest eggs.

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson · 16/09/2017 14:46

"Nope, I'd still go for Brexit and before I get shot down in flames and branded rascist etc I'm Italian/british."
Just out of interest could I ask you what your level of education is e.g. did you go to University? IME many people who have European connections and have voted Leave are less well educated than those with EU connection who voted Remain. Just curious.

Flyingflipflop · 16/09/2017 14:59

Just curious or just having a sly dig and calling the poster thick?

Pensionista · 16/09/2017 15:35

IdontlooklikeEmmaWatson.........you are in fact saying you are less educated. Sorry, unless you know every leaver in the UK please don't generalise.

allegretto · 16/09/2017 17:06

I'm Italian/british

If you have dual nationality, I guess you have less to lose!

SouthLondonDaddy · 16/09/2017 17:26

What on Earth does dual nationality have to do with being or not being racist?
Immigrants can be racists, too. Second generation can be racists, too.

PS note "can", not "must be"

RandomlyGenerated · 16/09/2017 18:11

Idontlooklike is right, as recently published research shows a correlation between the level of education of voters and whether they voted to leave or remain:

www2.le.ac.uk/offices/press/press-releases/2017/august/greater-access-to-higher-education-could-have-reversed-eu-referendum-result-research-suggests

OliviaStabler · 16/09/2017 18:13

Still vote the same way.

Chipstick10 · 01/10/2017 17:44

I voted Brexit and would vote Brexit again with great big knobs on. Sick of it.

SouthLondonDaddy · 01/10/2017 20:25

Well said, @Chipstick10. After all:

the PM has had such a clear vision from the start, and she is implementing it with her renowned efficiency;

universities and hospitals are not heavily staffed by EU nationals;

the Home Office has not embarrassed itself, eg sending letters "in error" to EU nationals telling them to leave the country, so no doubt can reasonably be cast about the efficiency of the future visa system;

we'll have £350MM a week for our NHS; a Latin-speaking Eton alumnus (clearly the best person to stick it to the elite) said it, so it must be true;

the Brexit campaign has very clearly explained why having unelected civil servants is perfectly fine at home but an affront to democracy if said civil servants are in Brussels, and has also very clearly explained what autocratic and anti-British laws Brussels has forced down our throat. In fact the matter is so self-evident that no Brexit ever replies with a blank stare when pressed for details.

So, yes, I totally agree with you. Way to go, Rule, Britannia!

peteneras · 08/10/2017 13:59

Second EU referendum?

What second EU referendum? Why not a third, a fourth, a fifth or a sixth EU referendum? Better still, why not a 37th EU referundum like they have at the Sheffield Crucible for the world snookers championship - best of 37, eh?

Get over it, there's only ONE EU referendum or any referendum you care to name. The UK should just walk away tomorrow with no deals instead of wasting its time talking to those bunch of thugs who's demanding money with menace. We don't owe you a bean, you hear?
