More on the meaning of Trump, the Trumpsters and Trumpism

OP posts:
Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:01

We are the people yes. And we are against Trump.

claig · 25/11/2016 21:06

'We are the people yes. And we are against Trump.'

We are fortunate to live in a democracy where the pwoer of the elites and their teams of spinners is held in check and where what the people decide is supposed to be respected.

We the people voted for Brexit (even though many voted against it), but we won teh democratic vote against Blair, Cameron, the BBC and all the rest of them. So we hope that they will respect the democratic will of the people. And Donald Trump won the election in the US so we can only hope that that will be respected and that Trump will get in and work for the people.

Spinflight: I really don't know what you are talking about with the "distopian bastardry" comment, you will have to provide an example. I don't think I've been doing any "McCarthyist hate" either...

"Frankly anyone comparing a US president to a dictator really really doesn't understand US politics" I don't think he is a dictator, I think he would love to be one. I hope the US system will prevent this.

Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:15

"The people" means all of the people. Not your subsection. The people will fight against Trump, as is their democratic right.

Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:16

I wondered too, squishy. I assumed he meant Orwell.

squishysquirmy · 25/11/2016 21:17

Lweji: But, overall, remember that those who vehemently disagree with you and Trump here and elsewhere are also the People. And neither you nor him speak for such non-existent entity. Only for a subset.
Exactly.
I am off to the cinema, so will have to catch up on all the fascinating Trumpoganda and conspiracy theories later.

Lweji · 25/11/2016 21:18

We are fortunate to live in a democracy where the pwoer of the elites and their teams of spinners is held in check and where what the people decide is supposed to be respected.

Supposedly.
To start with, the electoral systems in the US and the UK are such that parties can win without overall voter majorities. Hmm

Furthermore, constituencies or electoral circles are defined and manipulated to be "safe" and change little. Certainly in the US.

But that respect for the vote of the people wasn't granted by Trump, with his threats of "rigging".

claig · 25/11/2016 21:19

'"The people" means all of the people. '

In an election, the will of the people means the majority vote that the people cast. That is how we elect governments, mayors or dog catchers.

The people chose Brexit. The political class don't like it, they disagreed with the people, but the election was held among the people, not just 657 MPs.

OP posts:
Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:20

Some people chose it. Some didn't. You're just going to have to live with that.

Spinflight · 25/11/2016 21:25

"We are the people yes. And we are against Trump."

Lol. I'm actually worried about the oceans rising, not due to global warming but the illiberal self delusional tears.

I suspect you aren't going to like the next few years, which is amusing.

claig · 25/11/2016 21:26

Lweij, that is the system we have. We can't wish it away. As Ivana Trump famously said on Celebrity Big Brother many years ago "it is wot it is" and for sheer wisdom that can't be trumped.

We have a House full of Lords, Ladies and Luvvies, Barons, Baronesses and all the restes. "It is wot it is" and that is why we vote, to make things better. That;s why Nigel Farage led the famous People's Army who said "surely there must be a better way than all this cronyism for pay, this pay for play, and the spin that Channel 4 News say".

OP posts:
Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:27

I doubt you are going to like them much either, Sponflight.

Lweji · 25/11/2016 21:32

I doubt you are going to like them much either,

And do look out for the actual oceans rising. It will affect you, regardless of your "truth".

Lweji · 25/11/2016 21:33

Sorry, meant to add yes to the quote.

Kaija · 25/11/2016 21:35

Yes I'm afraid so.

claig · 25/11/2016 21:44

'Report: Trump weighing Fox News' Monica Crowley for press secretary'

thehill.com/homenews/administration/307533-report-trump-weighing-fox-news-monica-crowley-for-press-secretary

Wow. I love Monica Crowley, she is excellent, common sense, brilliant. There was also talk of Laura Ingraham for that role, who is also brilliant.

Go Trump! Don't put any Establishment shills and cronies in!

OP posts:
Lweji · 25/11/2016 21:54

Lweij, that is the system we have. We can't wish it away.

Yes, it's just that it's not really a case of "fortunately we live in a democracy".

Democracy has its faults, but the type of democracy the US, and to some extent the UK, lives with can be rather unfortunate in fact.

It's not very democratic if most people in the US actually vote for the Democrats but Congress is systematically Republican.

I wonder if Trump is really prepared to fight Republicans on this and actually give power to the people.

claig · 25/11/2016 22:00

As trump said, he now loves the Electoral College System because it forces a politician to visit all the states and see all of the people. If it was a majority vote system, then Trump would only have gone to California, Texas, New York and Florida and that leaves out all the people in teh other states. It is a great system that gives all the states and the people a great say. As Trump said, he went to little Maine 4 times. Fantastic. Just like in England, having to go outside of London and see all the people in the country, otherwise how could Farage meet and greet the famous People's Army because they are all over the land, not just in London.

Evening Smile

Todays Washington Post fake news flurry is causing some significant fall out.

The list of Russian propaganda websites is halfway down, including of course, wikileaks......

theantimedia.org/washington-post-anti-media/

In the meantime, youll be pleased to know Josh Rogin of CNN and Washington Post, has unearthed the Russians behind Brexit.....

Chris1234567890 · 25/11/2016 22:16

This meme is just tooooo cool to not repeat.

Just for clarity and before I get 15 pages down and someone rocks up to throw flash bangs.

Im not Russian. I do not live in Russia. Nor am I paid by any commie organisation to share my views. All 'misinformed ravings' are my own.

Trump (Part 2)
claig · 25/11/2016 22:18

"So in other words, any and every one who is anything but a liberal drone is now a Russian plant? McCarthy would be proud."

Pathetic isn't it. Now we see who is anti democracy and freedom and free speech, the liberal teams of spinners. They list Ron Paul, libertarian Lew Rockwell of the Mises Institute, Alex Jones of Infowars as being Russian propaganda promoters

And now Putin behind Brexit. How desperate can these spinners get?

OP posts:
Kaija · 25/11/2016 22:20

Yes it's obviously quite wrong. The vast majority of these Brexit-Trumpers who might plausibly present as Putin shills just fall into the category of useful idiots.

Chris1234567890 · 25/11/2016 22:22

"It's not very democratic if most people in the US actually vote for the Democrats but Congress is systematically Republican. "

And this is why people vote as per the system theyre presented with. Referendum votes, where 1 vote means 1 vote, have a huge turnout compared to 1st past the post systems. Those voters in 'safe seats', dont bother. Its always been that way. Marginals will get better turn out, but in general, voters vote per the system.

Re-vote in a proportional representative way, and youll find the result even more of a Trump landslide.

claig · 25/11/2016 22:23

There is no country on earth as great in terms of free speech and free thought and ideas as the United States. If the liberals ever manage to end that free speech, then the whole world will be poorer for it, because only from America can you really learn what really goes on because Americans are the most independent minded people on earth. And that is on nearly every subject - politics, finance, health etc etc Without America, we would all be less free and informed.

Let's hope Trump beats the elites and spreads freedom to the whole world so that we can keep our sovereignty too, and what is left of our free speech and freedoms, and not have them handed over to some unelected bureaucrats in Brussels or anywhere else.

OP posts:
Kaija · 25/11/2016 22:29

I'm sorry to burst your rather worryingly engorged bubble, but Trump can't and won't beat the elites because he is one, and he's just promised them a massive tax cut.
