Anyone else torn over Corbyn coup

My Facebook is full of outrage at MPs overriding party members and yes I can see it's anti-democratic in that sense. But on the other hand I think it's unfair to brand the shadow cabinet members now resigning as Blairite plotters. I think many of them are just honestly fed up with his rather half-hearted Remain campaigning and don't think he has a chance of winning a possibly imminent general election. Whatever happens it's going to tear the Labour party apart. Just so depressing.

Did anyone, in the interests of transparency and accountability, ever reveal who is funding Saving Labour- both the campaign and the website?

Memoires · 13/07/2016 17:00

I am more disgusted by the antics of Eagle, Watson etc every day. If any of them are still in the party come the GE, Labour will have lost my vote possibly for good. Not that that shower of so-called people's representatives give a shit. No concept of loyalty or honour. That's the Vile Face of Labour, that little lot of self-serving Blair 'New' Crap Tories in Disguise.

I'm crosser than I realised I was! Grin

Looks Like John McDonnell is running the show, and doesn't care about the country or the party. Just his own ego and running a vicious campaign. Sad Sad times for the Labour party. It's been brought to its knees.

I agree. To pass off what he said last night at the rally as 'a joke' is also awful. Funnily enough many aren't laughing.

0phelia · 13/07/2016 18:03

John McDonnell has saved democracy. Unlike the rebels. Good result all around thanks to McDonnell et al!

flowersandsunshine · 13/07/2016 18:37

Am curious about whether this is a generational thing. Ophelia and Winnie, if you don't mind my asking, are you 20s? 30s? 40s? Older? And ditto for those who do not like Corbyn?

Happyon · 13/07/2016 19:04

Don't like him. Late 40s and on the left of the party. My CLP is pretty divided and I seem to be one of the youngest.

flowersandsunshine · 13/07/2016 19:35

Thanks. Anyone else? Esp Ophelia and Winnie?

WinnieFosterTether · 13/07/2016 19:36

I'm early 40's. Grew up in staunch Labour family - union members; union reps, etc. I voted Labour until Iraq. But for me, this coup is bigger than where Labour sits on the political spectrum. It's about who our elected representatives represent and what democracy means.

flowersandsunshine · 13/07/2016 19:50

Thanks. Who do you think "our elected representatives represent and what does democracy mean"?

Batteriesallgone · 13/07/2016 20:22

I'm 30 and I'm a lifelong (as far as I can be at 30) LibDem who never considered the Labour Party an option because Blair.

If Corbyn stays I will vote Labour because I am left wing and desperately want an actual left wing party to vote for. To me Corbyn represents a solid move away from the right wing Labour we've had ever since I came of age to vote.

I didnt trust Ed Miliband and I hated the fact the family were in politics - politicians like that seem like a seperate class / people who see it all as theories and games to my mind. Bit like Angela and Maria Eagle. The Labour siblings MPs thing is weird Wink (joke. Well, half a joke)

Batteriesallgone · 13/07/2016 20:24

It would kill me to vote Labour though because our MP is labour and she NEVER RESPONDS TO MY EMAILS which makes me think of her as a self serving cow too busy to actually engage with her electorate. But still. I'd still vote for her if it meant Corbyn.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/07/2016 21:55

And ditto for those who do not like Corbyn?

Late 30s. Left of centre. Not a Corbyn fan.

Ticklethosetoes · 13/07/2016 22:03

I've had more respect for Corbyn in the past week than the entire brexit campaign. I'm not labour I'm not anything but I've really thought better of him standing up and sticking at what he was elected to do. Even today at pms question time, he was asking electorates questions, cameron was taking the piss back with his answers, ignoring that these are actual real people's concerns.

WinnieFosterTether · 14/07/2016 02:21

What does everyone think about the new challenger? Those who thought Angela was a stalking horse or sacrificial lamb, do you think Smith is the real candidate? He doesn't seem any better than Eagle to me and I can't understand why they would split the 'opposition to Corbyn' vote. Although, of course, one of them may drop out before any vote.

BakewellSliceAgain · 14/07/2016 07:22

Smith seems a chancer.

0phelia · 14/07/2016 08:32

I wondered if Eagle might back down now because she's so unpopular but not 100% sure.

Smith probably is alright but he's a new MP. He didn't vote for the Iraq war but didn't vote against it either seeing as he wasn't an MP then. No one knows JS about him so I guess he has a free blank canvas to paint.

There are many more stronger more experienced MP's out there plotters but it seems they're too busy trying to stitch up the members!

Late 30's here and come from a family of Green voters. Joined Labour to vote Corbyn the first time around.

flowersandsunshine · 14/07/2016 12:45

To summarise results of my highly unrepresentative poll - those pro-Corbyn seem to come more from a range of non-Labour backgrounds eg Green, Libdems. Those anti-Corbyn more likely to be from a Labour background (though not nec eg Winnie). No significant difference in ages I can see, though the youngest named is pro-Corbyn (I had wondered if Corbynites tended to be younger, hence their association with Labour as = Blairism before Corbyn, because they're too young to remember Labour prior to Blair).

I'm anti-Corbyn and 40s, Labour supporter. I'm old enough to remember how disappointed I was with Blair but also to remember how much better Blair was than Thatcher/Major and how far from power Labour was in the 80s. This makes me more of a realist and a pragmatist. Too me, Corbyn fans are unrealistically naive.

Arissa · 14/07/2016 16:49

Leftish of centre - 50's. Generally voted for Labour.

Corbyn fans are unrealistcally naive
Couldn't agree more.

These fans are not looking at the whole chess board, and are sadly being caught up in the smoke and mirrors of the rhetoric.

It's not about one man. It is about the needs of the whole country.
Loath Boris and Leadsome and their negative politics, however the calibre of these people shone through when they fell on the sword for the good of their party, and therefore the needs of the nation to get back to some stability, in such volatile times as soon as possible. They saw the whole chessboard.

Corbyn, is all about himself sadly, and is being pushed on by other - me, myself and I - colleagues. Take a look at the comments left on Eagle's FB page to see the violent upsurge these people have instigated.

The breakdown of the Labour party becomes Extremely frightening when you watch Arron Banks views on the

But do Corbyn and his colleagues care? No.

Statelychangers · 14/07/2016 18:05

I think it will be a long time before we see a Labour Gov again - I find myself hoping that Theresa May will stay true to her word because she has been handed the country on a plate - there is no credible opposition. Labour are showing their ugly side, they are scrapping like a bunch of kids, it's awful to watch and they won't put that house in order for quite a while - they can't run a party never mind a country. Any word from the lib dems - or any other party out there?

WinnieFosterTether · 14/07/2016 19:42

Tbh I think it is a disservice to call people who are anti-coup - 'Corbyn fans'. It subscribes to a view of politics as a popularity contest and I haven't actually read any Corbyn supporters lauding his personality.
It's about policies; it's about whether MPs represent or lead; and it's about whether being a strong opposition is viewed as important or if the only aim is winning.
I think these are important differences between the two sides of the Labour party. Arguably, they represent such fundamental differences that the two sides are impossible to align. But I wouldn't be naive enough to consider it to be about personalities. imo that rather feeds into the misdirection and misunderstanding that has characterised the coup.

Batteriesallgone · 14/07/2016 19:50

Well I don't know. Wasn't it just months ago we were calling Leavers unrealistic and short sighted?

There is a huge undercurrent of dissent in this country. Labour would do well to be on the right side of it IMO

mantlepiece · 14/07/2016 20:13

I support Corbyn.

Mandelson/Campbell dirty tricks all over this terrible situation.

Support is definitely building, despite no support from his party or the media.
I think apart from Jeremy's policies, which people are finding attractive, they are incensed by the totally undemocratic behaviour from the Party.
No one likes being called trots or dogs, especially when we are middle aged mums. It's like a war out there and people are fighting back. That's what's driving the thing I think. The injustice of it all.

Happyon · 14/07/2016 21:16

I am a sad Labour activist who thinks they have all behaved badly. I wish all the Blairites would STFU and leave things to the newer generations. Corbyn is a disaster but I can see that he stands for a particular and real form of democracy. But he cannot and will not ever be PM material and this country has yet again been handed over to the Tories. I'm utterly dejected while Tories must be rubbing their hands in glee Sad

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/07/2016 21:56

No one likes being called trots or dogs, especially when we are middle aged mums.

No one likes being called scum, traitors, scabs, bitterite either.

No 'side' is acting well in this. Let's not pretend it is all one way.
