Any catholic church you are aware of, which gives the whole holy communion, not just the wafer ....I need one in Surrey

When you say traditional help me out in understanding what you mean.

IME most churches that describe themselves as traditional Catholic tend to give communion in one kind only unless e.g. someone is coeliac, and for that you'd need to give them a call beforehand to let them know.

eggandonion · 20/07/2025 13:48

Do you mean wine too?

Octavia64 · 20/07/2025 13:48

??

most churches if you let them know you are coeliac or gluten intolerant have alternatives.

if you mean the bread and the wine not sure that’s a catholic thing.

hellosunshineminesagin · 20/07/2025 13:49

Most churches are avoiding wine because of transferring disease

minnienono · 20/07/2025 14:00

Most Anglican churches give communion in two ways (wafer and wine) but depending on local tradition it may be dipped into the wine rather than sipping from the common cup, some like us allow you to do it either way (there’s two cups, one for sipping, one for dipping, we also have gf wafers on request but you have to sell the person on duty as you walk in) and some have lots of tiny separate cups. The website “A church near you” will show you where all the churches are and contact details so you can find out how communion is taken. A good indication that it’s towards the Anglo Catholic tradition is if they have a regular choir singing, normal hymns, any evensongs listed or perhaps a said communion listed as traditional. Cathedrals usually fit this category, but I’m not familiar with the churches in that diocese as I work for a different one. Many rural churches offer a range over different villages and different styles on different weeks

@hellosunshineminesagin

i work for the c of e, every church I know uses wine

nocoolnamesleft · 20/07/2025 14:30

Catholic Churches used to routinely give communion under both kinds, but for years now it’s only really been for special occasions, and became much rarer post Covid.

rainyday21 · 20/07/2025 14:41

It’s a COVID thing - I am in Surrey too but have been to Arundel cathedral twice in the last few months and there was communion under both kinds

That's nice they do both kinds

I meant liturgical church which gives both bread and wine

CofE churches are all doing bread (wafer) and wine.
I didn’t realise Catholic Churches don’t.

I don’t know Surrey, but I know quite a few CofE churches in my area which are Anglo Catholic. There will be some- best to email the catholic
diocese office and ask them, or ask the CofE diocese about Anglo Catholic Churches. They will know.

eggandonion · 20/07/2025 15:11

I thought Roman Catholic communion was wafer only. Anglican and other protestant churches are wine and wafer. Orthodox I have no idea.
I seem to remember certain protestant sects used non alcoholic wines in NI.

TheGentleButFirmMadonna · 20/07/2025 15:19

I cannot understand why only the bread. The last supper was in the two elements

Well, I see it's because of covid but this has gone now

In our Catholic parish, the priest is keen for it to return, but after asking the congregation a couple of times, many aren’t keen. Lots of vulnerable, older people. I think Covid made them think more about how germs can spread. Maybe it will back one day?

myplace · 20/07/2025 15:52

My church uses the little cups. Not strictly doctrinal, but I haven’t used the one cup since COVID, apart from in a small group of about 6.

TheGentleButFirmMadonna · 20/07/2025 16:43

I wonder how though....the living body and bread is huge for Catholicism

WhatYouEgg · 20/07/2025 16:50

In the Catholic Churches I attend, the wine was stopped over COVID and has mostly not returned. However, my parish church allowed wine for Maundy Thursday, though only about 50% of the congregation took it.

BigFatLiar · 20/07/2025 17:08

It's making a come back but is optional for parishioners, the wafer is satisfactory on its own. Even before covid many didn't take the wine part.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 20/07/2025 17:10

The RC churches that I've been to all still seem to serve wine from one cup. You tend to get askance looks for missing it, even if you do have the wafer.

I was quite impressed to learn that my nearest Mormon church serves water (they don't drink alcohol) in what I can only describe as mini shot glasses (I'm not sure of the proper term, so I apologise to any Mormons). It seems much more hygienic than sipping from a common cup!

newshoestoday · 20/07/2025 17:16

I’m in Essex. We receive under both forms. A church I visit in London which is also a particular shrine just does the one. I think they survey parishioners and also it’s the layout of the church like queues and stuff.

StrokeCity · 20/07/2025 17:18

I was brought up Roman Catholic in NI and have never seen wine used in any RC church here, only wafers. Never knew it could be a Catholic thing

LostMySocks · 20/07/2025 17:25

DH is Catholic. When he goes to Mass the Priest gives out the bread (wafer) or Blessing if not had FHC then move to the side for wine. However wine is very rarely offered. It really surprised me as I'm CofE and we always have both kinds. We also have a choice for sipping the wine separately or being offered tinctured.
I've been to Mass with DH in many countries and I'm sure we only regularly see the bread.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/07/2025 17:35

Christ is wholly present in each of the two components of the eucharist.
If you are RC, would you take communion in an anglocatholic church?

CandiedPrincess · 20/07/2025 17:38

I was brought up RC and we had both but I'm not sure now, as I've not been in years and would never take communion at a different church.
