surprised to learn people still celebrate Xmas when they understand its origins

I have recently read about the origins of Christmas, and although a muslim, would always participate on a low level (i.e return cards, return merry christmas wishes etc)
But now i know the origins, cannot continue to do this.
However i was having a conversation with a group of friends and old colleagues (a mixture of religions), who all seem to know the origins and still celebrate christmas.
isn't that wrong?

Well, at least Christianity had the good grace to place a woman at the centre of things

I dislike strong religious belief. I think it's barking.

Never in a month of Ramadans will you persuade us to give up Christmas. Christmas rocks.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 26/10/2007 21:54

Puppydog- I presume you celebrated Eid?
Apart from living within a more christian orientated culture, why would a Muslim celebrate Christmas, any mroe thean a Christian celebrate Eid? Or Diwali?

stressteddy · 26/10/2007 21:54

puppydog - are there any parts of your religion that you know have different meanings/origins etc? Which parts do you have to explain more thoroughly than others to your children?
Very interested in this discussion btw - fascinating to see other points of view

dadtob · 26/10/2007 21:54

yes even trinity. you can actually find wht trinty by looking/;reading christine scholars.

everything i have wrote is all from refs from your books not the quran. the quran is a treasure of knowedlge. if you would like i can direct u where u can get a free english translation.

it is so important nowadays to understand one another religion. it is our duty to ask questions and make sure if are on the right path, as we will be reponsible for our decisions on judgement day.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 26/10/2007 21:57

Not my books - I ahve A Bible, Qur'an, dhammapada and Guru Granth Sahib in front of me right now... and I swear there's a Bhagavad Gita somewhere- must be! Whilst i find inspiration from the life of Jesus, I don't believe 'in' the Bible, it's just a collection of stories by some people that we don't really know much (if anything) about.

TheEvilDediderata · 26/10/2007 21:57

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 26/10/2007 21:58

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 26/10/2007 21:58

Loon Desi?

PuppyDogEyes · 26/10/2007 21:59

Mrsbadger - Quran is much more clear that god is the almighty creator. Jesus is a prophet. Mary was his mother, a virgin mother.
Allah (god)has no children, siblings etc. so i suppose it does answer the question of the trinity.

i think because it is set like that, muslims (such as myself) struggle with the concept of the holy trinity.

This discussion has made me want to go away re read what the Quran says about Jesus. it would be interesting to see how we differ on what we believe about him.

harpsicorpsecarrier · 26/10/2007 22:02

so you're fine with the idea of a virgin mother, but the trinity you don't get.
mmmmm, faith eh?

Hallowedam · 26/10/2007 22:04

dadtob, Christians believe we are all the children of God. But Jesus is part of God, one-third of the Holy Trinity, proclaimed as His son by the Angel Gabriel and by God himself in the Gospels. Christians believe he was God's only Son with a capital S sent to dwell among us, suffer and die for us.

God and Jesus are also often described as shepherds and we are his sheep, if that makes any more sense to you?

TheEvilDediderata · 26/10/2007 22:05

Got to bed, dad.

Methinks you're in drink. At least, I hope so.

I think attitudes to holy books are intereseting. As a member of the CofE, I come from the Protestant tradition of The Book - that we can all read the Bible for ourselves, in our own language and make up our own minds. We can have our own individual relationship with God, we don't have to depend upon priests to interpret or intercede for us (although they are nice to have around).

That was the whole point of the Protestant revolution, the Reformation - Martin Luther wanted to overthrown the superstitions (as he saw them) of the Roman Catholic church, to stop the priests creating a barrier between ordinary worshippers and God. And doing Bad Things like selling indulgences and worshipping bits of bone.

Being able to read the word of God youself was essential to that. People fought and died for our right to read the Bible ourselves and make our own minds up.

TheEvilDediderata · 26/10/2007 22:10

Good night, peachy

TheEvilDediderata · 26/10/2007 22:12

Fantastic post, Hallow!

PuppyDogEyes · 26/10/2007 22:18

hallowedam - not having someone to intercede is that why protestants dn't do confessional to priests and don't have saints?
(please correct me if i'm wrong)
