Here we are!

Roll up and sign in!

Oldies welcome, newbies welcome, anyone welcome!

It's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

Song of Solomon "set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm" always makes me uncontrollably snigger. Very embarrassing in church services! Wrong sort of seal, I know...

madhairday · 07/04/2011 17:22

nickel I can understand why what you have witnessed puts you off. I've seen some of that pentecostal vehemence too and it sits uncomfortably with me, especially when you get the violent pushing and 'Thus says the Lord!' type thing. it feels wrong to me as well. My experience is more gentle, and even having had (many times) the shaking thing it's always gentle, it's always invited and always results in deeper faith and changes in me for the good.

Sounds like you experience God's presence in a gentle way too. I believe God works in us the best way that works with our own personalities, and that is different for everyone. There is no rule that says we all have to raise our hands/speak in tongues/clap/insert other happy clappy behaviour. Grin Thankfully, we are all different. But I share these experiences because of the wholeness I have found through them, and how worship lifts me sometimes in a pretty profound and yes bodily way :)

Grin

but that's not rude! Shock

OP posts:
madhairday · 07/04/2011 17:26

What's not rude? [slow emoticon] Confused

madhairday · 07/04/2011 17:26

Oh is that to Mary - didn't see that. lol at seal! Grin

MaryBS · 07/04/2011 19:28

I'm not sniggering because its rude, I'm sniggering because I see the literal interpretation of seal, ie a small grey animal. Stems from my finding a box of "small grey seals" in our stationery cupboard at work, and wanting to inform the RSCPA! :o

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 19:30

Grin Mary. I'm guessing that's one of the joys of Aspergers Smile

MaryBS · 07/04/2011 19:35

Yes :). Morning prayer at the moment is "interesting" because I can't get my head round "bend the knee of my heart" :o

You should hear me preach on the trinity. The trinity is like a 3 leafed clover (OK shamrock). So its small and green and lives in my lawn :o. The trinity is like neapolitan icecream. So it has to be kept in the freezer in case it melts. :o

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 19:40

Grin at the trinity

poor old DS1 looked aghast today as my best friend quoted a bit of his lines at him,she was arranging to bring him home after his school disco tonight and she said "ok you can walk up but make sure you wait for me to pick you up at the end, if you don't (this it he quoted bit) "I'll scourge you and flog you"". (DS1 is the guard retelling what happened to Jesus in the play).

Poor old DS1's face was like this Shock - thankfully BF knows my current concerns and saw the look on his face so stopped before she finished the line of which is about pushing a crown of thorns into his head and beating him to within an inch of his life.

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:40

Grin Mary

What about the song 'open the eyes of my heart?' Grin

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:41

Baroque you have to do a blow by blow acoount of SH so I can enjoy it vicariously Envy

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:42

Although not sure what an 'acoount' is. Poss a Scottish account?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 19:46

I'll try MHD - but I won't have internet access - only my phone which isn't very good for using the internet on. - but you will hear all about it when I get back - with lots and lots of photos and maybe a little video Grin

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:48

Bring on the videos. You might even get some GK footage [grein]

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:49

Grin doing well tonight

newlark · 07/04/2011 19:50

Very intersting reading on the different types of music - I went to a youth group in my teens which might have been descibed as a bit "happy clappy" and I quite liked the music (plenty of GK Grin). Having drifted round various more traditional churches through my twenties I've ended up in an evangelical CofE church which uses a lot more modern songs including lots of Stuart Townend - I saw him in concert last year and I would have quite happily carried on singing all night. My experience of God has been in a very gentle, gradual way as MHD describes and that fits well with my personality - I'm quite a private, restrained person - but there are some songs that can get me feeling pretty emotional at times - I've even been close to lifting my hands in the air (but not that close Grin)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 19:50

you on the Wine tonight MHD Grin

madhairday · 07/04/2011 19:53

nah Baroque, that'll be the codeine Grin

Lifting arms is good newlark. Liberating. If that's your thing, of course :)

essenceofSES · 07/04/2011 21:10

Hello all!

Taken me a while to catch up on all of your chat :)

I'm another Delirious fan Grin I've seen them in concert about 5 times - the first time was supporting Bon Jovi at Milton Keynes!

I do enjoy their music and I do call myself a fan, but I really find that their music can inspire me spiritually. I love History Maker (it's a good question - how do I make a difference or make my mark on history?" and another favourite is Majesty - "you're grace has found me just as I am, empty handed but alive in your hands".

I could go on....

At the end of the day, I don't think it really matters whether you like certain music or not. It's about doing or using whatever helps you personally. That must be why there are so many different types of worship - God wants to make it as easy as possible for all of us. If it helps someone to sing GK every day of the week, fair enough. Not for me though Grin

I've had a bit of a tough week. I keep getting frustrated that things aren't happening for me now. The gospel reading this Sunday is Lazarus and we looked at it in RCIA on Tuesday. What struck me is that it took 4 days for Jesus to get to Lazarus, which must have frustrated Mary and Martha, but he still answered their prayer. I somehow need to let go and bit more and trust God. I don't always find this easy...

MaryBS · 07/04/2011 21:54

I don't know that song, MHD! Eeek at the thought though! Another one "meditate in the watches of the night". Strange and weird clocks, like in Dali's biggovernment.com/files/2011/03/Dali-Persistence-of-Time.jpg painting come to mind...

I like Stuart Townend, although I don't agree with all of his theology - I won't sing "wrath of God was satisfied", I always replace it with "love of God".

MaryBS · 07/04/2011 21:55

(oops, mucked up that link...) Blush

madhairday · 07/04/2011 22:01

Oooh Majesty is one of my favourite songs ever.

Did Delirious really support Bon Jovi? Grin

lol at the Dali painting coming to mind at that verse, Mary Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 22:09

there must be quite a lot that send off interesting images in your head Mary from the bible.

How about "the scripture moveth us in sundry places"

essenceofSES · 07/04/2011 22:11

MHD - it was a truly great concert in about 2001. Another band were in support too. I think it was Matchbox Twenty??!
I've also seen them at Shepherd's Bush and Hammersmith a few times.

Just realised my poor grammar in my previous post with a missing ")" and "you're" instead of "your"
Blush

thejaffacakesareonme · 07/04/2011 22:14

This is going to sound really thick, but what is Spring Harvest? I've never heard of it before, possibly because it is held too far south for many people from here to travel down to it. I've gathered that the music is great. Is it all music or are there talks etc too? I hope everyone that goes has a great time.

I like a real mixture of music - everything from really old to really new. Even GK, although I prefer Stuart Townend's music.

Really interesting discussion about worship styles. Personally, I am quite a shy person and am very restrained. No arm waving here! There is a bit of me though that would love to be a bit more flamboyant.
