nickel Is thankful for non-alcoholic wine, but offers a virtual glass of the real thing Wine Grin

MaryBS · 06/04/2011 19:23

Was gutted not to have the last word on the other thread :o

As regards thread name, how about Graham in the title? Could be an entirely different Graham for each person :o

another Graham

madhairday · 06/04/2011 21:50

Bet that's Big Church Day Out is it Milly? Was narked with that this year cos last year they did one in Derby way as well as dahn sarf but this time it's only in the south so impossible for loads of northeners/midlanders to get to. Huh, because it does have some good names on mainstage, quite apart from GK in his little Tea Tent for the old ladies and Middlemarchlover Grin

thanksamillion · 07/04/2011 07:55

Yes I think that's it (I couldn't remember/find the ad yesterday). I liked the juxtaposition of Nickel-esc classical with the big GK as though they were one and the same Grin

Our youth group sang Shine Jesus Shine last night - but in Romanian. I tried not to giggle.

Hello Middlemarch. The church here (I'm in Moldova) also has a no alcohol position for similar (social) reasons. Alcoholism is rife (I was in the shop this morning at 8am and a guy came in to knock back a glass of wine) so we respect it here but sometimes have a sneaky glass if we're out somewhere where we won't bump into anyone we know Not sure I would like to commit to never drinking again Smile

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 09:08

Can I just add that I've also seen GK live................well kind of - he led the worship at a thing in Northampton 2yrs ago................was actually very good but we didn't sing much of his own stuff

God a totally mad 2 days coming up, we're off to Spring Harvest after 2 more sleeps (TK's announcment this morning - he has no idea what it is be we've infected him with our excitedness). I need to shop, cook (have 2 meals I said I'd do next week and we prepared in advance and then just reheat/coook on the day because of limited time, plus some other bits I said I'd get), and I need to get all my laundry sorted, and clean (can't have my friends DS breaking his neck when he comes in to feed the cat Blush), and I need to get the boys hair cut and I need to pack.

Oh - and I need to get a poster/flyter done for the Good Friday evening thing, and I really want to sort some of the techy stuff for it before we go and get the church newsletter done

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 09:09

and Ahem! I've just realised you got the thread title WRONG.

it's Delirious!!!!! Not delirium Shock!!!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 10:29

corrr blimey - not very "Christian" in topic - but one of exH's lodgers is a bit of all right!

nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 11:50

I should have put in the OP anyone who mentions GK would be chucked off the thread.

It's ruining the name for me.
My dad is called Graham, and family tradition dictates that first-born boy has dad's first name as middle name. None of my sisters took up this tradition, so it falls to me.
Now it's ruined, totally ruined :( :(

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 11:52

(obviously, we have to do it for our children cos my dad didn't have boys. and Graham is an odd middlename for a girl)

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 11:53

cute TK getting all excited! Grin

will be sooo funny if he hates it! GrinShock

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 11:54

I know it's delirious, but that sounded wrong so I changed it to delirium - kind of matches what you happy clappy sorts go into when you sing weird music with your hands in the air Grin

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 11:57

anyway, church stuff.

We're annoyed (in our little band of three - 2 organists and me) about the posters outside the church for celebrating easter.
there are 3 separate posters - one for Palm Sunday, one for Maundy thursday/good friday and one for Easter Day.
The Palm Sunday one goes
Holy communion here 10am
Saints alive at St Mary's 5pm
tiny little writing evensong here 6:30pm

no mention of the fact it's choral, no big bold letters.
Very rarely does Choral Evensong fall on Palm Sunday, and we are really pushing the boat out- a mix of lovely Palm Sunday stuff and Passiontide stuff, and it barely gets a mention.

Angry

no no no no no it HAS to be Delirious!!! IT's the name of a Christian band!!!! The Doxology goes with the Delirious to meet at opposite ends of the spectrum

nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:03

oh, i see!
well, you didn't say!

I prefer delirium, though.

(do not put links to Delirious, I will not look at them)

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:03

anyway, this is a good thing - I couldn't cope with any more happyclappies joining the thread! Grin

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:06

well I thought people would know who Delirious was even if they'd never listened to any of their stuff.

They're much better than GK Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:06

they're not happy clappy - they're actually a rock band (but not heavy rock)

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:19

\link{\probably their most famous one}

nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:21

comments like this:
"yep. I know i was almost in tears, i really felt the Spirit moving!"
really put me off christian rock.

but it does remind me of the time in the Simpsons, where Ned goes to a Chris Rock gig, thinking it was Christian Rock and finding out it was Chris Rock, very rude comedian, and he was a leetle bit traumatised.

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:21

although History maker made it into the Top 40 UK singles last year too.

nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:22

don't where the came from - it wasn't in the preview....

OP posts:
nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:23

(there's a teeny chance I could be a cynical staid traditionalist - I don't like all these outbursts of feeling the spirit and the "praise jesus!" acclamations. I prefer my christianity to be a bit more restrained Blush )

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:29

it may put you off, but I've been to some "alternative" churches, mostly full of young people, and people who have become Christians through them.

my Best friends DH only started coming to church to support her (when their DD was facing her first op years ago). He's a builder and had previously refused to do any work in churches at al as they freaked him out. She bought him some Christian Rock CD's (as that's "his" type of music) and that helped him greatly on his spiritual journey (she can't get him out of the church now - he's always in there doing bits and bobs haha)

I've felt the spirit moving listening to/singing Palestrina just as much as I have listening to (and singing) the likes of Delirious and 3rd Day

On the Chris Rock note - I think he's hilarious, yes he's rather vulgar and rude at times, but he is incredibly funny, exH and I sat on more than one occasion and nearly wet ourselves laughing at his one about black people Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 12:31

that's one thing I don't get about the "traditionalists" - why are they stuck in the tradition of the baroque/renaissance/Gregorian periods - why don't they want to go further back when it was clapping, and drums and all sorts??????

nickelbabyhatcher · 07/04/2011 12:33

I don't know - I love rock music, I love pop music, I love all sorts of music. But it just sounds weird to me when instead of singing about a girl, they're singing about their love for God. I know it shouldn't be weird, and a good song is a good song, but it just feels wrong .
