What's the best pet name you've come across?

I'm partial to pets with very beige, mid-century human names like Colin, Dave, Alan, Brenda, Sandra, Deidre.

A lady I worked with once rescued a really vicious parrot and renamed him Thomas-a-Peckitt.

I've just got back from a dog walk where we met a giant, perfectly rounded, sandy coloured staffy called King Edward to reflect the fact he's basically a potato.

I can't stop smiling. I had to share it with someone.

I have a rule that out cats should have names that would be suitable in a nursing home.

At the moment we have Frank, Eric and Elsie. My Dad's cat's are called Susie, Clarence and Dorothy.

In the past we have had Mabel, Lottie, Delilah.

I know someone with a cat named Jean

A friend had a vicious rabbit called Attila the Bun

I love this. When we had a vicious hamster he was called Damian, son of Satan.

We had another hamster called Houdini because by the time we got him home from the pet shop which was only a couple of minutes from our house, he had escaped the box he was in.

When I collected my ShiTzu pup, which I named Betsy Trotwood (not very original I know), the people collecting her sister said she would be called Lilo. I thought it very strange that they were naming their dog after an air bed.

Our new pup, a many-breed mongrel, is now Perry, short for Peregrine Rapscallion Buggeroo.

I think some human names really suit animals.
chloe for a cat for example,
jessie for cat or dog.

but some names are a definite no for me… I mean you wouldn’t stand called ‘Matthew’ and it be a pet would you?

I think Dave is a good dog name, Charlie yes - Charles no.

Jack or Jax yes. Jacqueline - no 🤣

When we rescued our little girl dog, my DD wanted to change her name to Chloe but I just consider that a cat name, we needed up sticking with her chosen name

Sickdissapointed · 07/06/2026 14:04

We know dogs Percy and Keith and have friends with dog called Andrew -
love the names

Childhood pets (disclaimer: never used for passwords or security questions)...

Guinea Pigs - Pip and Squeak
Tortoise - Engelbert Humperdinck
Cats - Topsy and Bunty (not posh cats either, just moggies)

I've recently read a book where the two cats were Katniss and Prim (Hunger Games)

Our very first pet when I was little was a cat called Topsy. Quite a few years ago I used it as a security question and used to feel really embarrassed having to say Topsy to a customer service person (I don’t really know why). It’s a long gone service now so not concerned about security risk.

Do you know where the name came from as I have no idea.

DC went through a herpetology phase when he was about 11 and desperately wanted a pet snake. .
We bought two small ones and he named them Hydra and Medusa.
But you don’t get much interaction with a snake. (And they’re not really that interesting TBH. )

My mum named the animals and no idea why she chose Topsy or Bunty. There were some Topsy and Tim children’s books first published in the 1960s when we got our cat, so possibly from there.

I read about a guy who named his dog Shark. It was especially fun when he had to call him during their walks along crowded beaches.

Another favourite is my friend's extremely majestic Irish Wolfhound. His name is Steve (that's the dog, not the friend).

PruneEnigmatique · 07/06/2026 16:02

I ended up with two goldfish called Sushi and Sashimi and two tortoises called Peanut and Chestnut (because shells). We didn't plan the food theme, it just happened.

Our dog is called Fanny.
My husband loves Fanny.

We met a Diggidey dog yesterday, a very old female beagle. She was lovely and sadly on her last few days or weeks on this earth. Lovely to have met her and her lovely owners and our puppy said hello to her, she wasn't as keen to say hi back.

myavocadoisgrowing · 07/06/2026 17:04

My son had two goldfish called Ebeneezer and Florence - Eb and Flo for short.
