What's the best pet name you've come across?

I'm partial to pets with very beige, mid-century human names like Colin, Dave, Alan, Brenda, Sandra, Deidre.

A lady I worked with once rescued a really vicious parrot and renamed him Thomas-a-Peckitt.

I've just got back from a dog walk where we met a giant, perfectly rounded, sandy coloured staffy called King Edward to reflect the fact he's basically a potato.

I can't stop smiling. I had to share it with someone.

My niece had a hedgehog called Bruce Quillis.

My mum rescued a young hedgehog found on her street years ago, the assorted kids on her street all saw and she asked them what he should be called. 9 out of the 10 said Spike but one lad said Eric so he became Spikey Eric. He over wintered in her downstairs loo on a diet of cat food and visited her for some time after he was released.

When she had another young hog a few years later he wad called Spiney Norman.

As a child I had a rabbit my dad named Pie - my horse was King Edward AKA Eddie, and I’ve had cats called Colin and Dave!!!

These are fantastic.

We always rescue dogs so they generally come with names.
But me and DH have always talked about naming a dog Evious Mingo, after Barkevious Mingo the NFL player. A bit niche

Great names we've heard whilst sitting in the Vet's waiting room - George Quinn (a very serious looking boxer dog, his name made him sound like a BBC reporter) and Pumpkin Thomas (orange cat)

I had a cat called Ceefer. Once when listening to a radio programme where you had to phone in about pet names someone said they knew a parrot called Mr Smithers, which I think is a great name.

SnugQuoter · 07/06/2026 07:56

My dog had been named Avril at the rescue centre. When we were matched they said I could choose her name as she’d only been Avril for a week. (Previous unnamed street dog). There’s no way she was an Avril Lavigne as she’s a mature lady with a beautiful wise face - so Joni Mitchell it is. We recently met an Elton dog on holiday which was very exciting too.

We’re a cat lover family and have 5. We have an albert, Rolo, bellatrix but Bella for short, Dobby and a kitten called Shelby

We used to have guinea pigs called Bellatrix and Luna!

The Wyrd Cats are Edie (or Edith Minton Sedgwick - her namesake - when she's naughty) and Piper (named after my daughter's favourite character in Neighbours at the time!).

I have plans to add two more cats and a cavapoo when I can work a bit less - they will be Betty, Doreen and Ralph 😁.

There’s a daschund walked in our local park called Trevor which I think is awesome.

And a friend of mine had a cat called Gary.

I too like human names for animals.

I know a cat called Gary! It’s very young so probably not the same.
A friend called their cat Cooker, short for Cooking Fat. ( spoonerism)
