What's the best pet name you've come across?

I'm partial to pets with very beige, mid-century human names like Colin, Dave, Alan, Brenda, Sandra, Deidre.

A lady I worked with once rescued a really vicious parrot and renamed him Thomas-a-Peckitt.

I've just got back from a dog walk where we met a giant, perfectly rounded, sandy coloured staffy called King Edward to reflect the fact he's basically a potato.

I can't stop smiling. I had to share it with someone.

A cocker spaniel called Jarvis. I imagine there are a few.

Can reveal my mum met Jarvis Cocker once, told him our pet was named after him and he said he was honoured 😄

My family uses a lot of human names

Stick insects: Alfred, Kylie
Rabbit: Barbara
Cats: Doreen, Reginald, Gary, Clyde, Esme, Alistair, Shirley, Larry, Malcolm
Chickens: Francine, Delores

When I took Barbara to the vet I could hear the vet nurse having a laugh with the vet. When she saw me she said, "That's my grandmother's name!" I thought she just meant her grandmother was called Barbara, but no her surname was Bunnie so her grandmother's name was Barbara Bunnie.

Childhood pets (disclaimer: never used for passwords or security questions)...

Guinea Pigs - Pip and Squeak
Tortoise - Engelbert Humperdinck
Cats - Topsy and Bunty (not posh cats either, just moggies)

I've recently read a book where the two cats were Katniss and Prim (Hunger Games)

I know a farmer who has a house sheep. (Long story - poorly as a lamb and bottle fed and nurtured ended up sleeping in the kitchen in the dog basket) any way she’s called Eileen .. and yes, when he’s calling her to get up and out for the day (follows him like a puppy) it’s ’come on Eileen’…

Name changed for this as I've told a few people. We had a very large black and white cat called Phil. Me and Phil were at the vets, the vet opened the door and called Phil. The man next to me stood up, she looked at him and said no not you him, whilst pointing at feline Phil. Human Phil looked a bit dejected and sat back down.

My best ever cat was called Trevor. We currently have Graham, Morris, Bob and Terry.

A Weimaraner called Simon. I see him every morning when I go on my walk.

Years ago a yorkie called Norman.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/06/2026 09:02

I sometimes wonder what these three-legged pets with names like Tripod were called BEFORE they lost the limb.

I know a dog called Colin. I think he's adorable but apparently he's a bit of a bruiser with other dogs. I also knew a cat called Brenda. My own animals tend to have 'animal' names.

ThatGreenFawn · 07/06/2026 09:14

Leslie Thomas (author The Virgin Soldiers) had successive basset hounds all called Furlong.
Years ago I knew a woman in our village who had two cats called Kitty and Kittykitty.

I have a rule that out cats should have names that would be suitable in a nursing home.

At the moment we have Frank, Eric and Elsie. My Dad's cat's are called Susie, Clarence and Dorothy.

In the past we have had Mabel, Lottie, Delilah.
