Sick of these XL bully owners

FreshCop · 10/10/2022 21:38

I’m just so tired not of these dogs, but the people that are attracted to them and how they behave.

My local area of Liverpool has loads of these dogs and most recently a lady got mauled to death by 5 of them that were kept in a house together. Literally round the corner.

Why aren't measures taken to prevent the unsavoury breeding and sale of these dogs, which clearly have no regard for the welfare of the animals or the safety of people? It is obvious that the average person is completely unable to guarantee that their dog won't harm members of the public.

Examples:

Neighbour who keeps two XL bullies in their apartment and has a one-year-old child. However, it's okay because they are only permitted in the kitchen. Dogs undoubtedly enjoy it, I’m sure. Don’t know what the father is thinking leaving his girlfriend and baby at home alone with two of those dogs, they’re absolutely huge.

A tiny woman who lives across the street has now made the decision to purchase one. He "stays by her side" as she very proudly walks him without a lead. The dog has jumped on me; he's still only a puppy but is already very strong. She appears to enjoy the attention the dog attracts and is proud of herself for walking the dog outside without a leash. My child was knocked over by the dog after it jumped on her. Once more, the woman believes it's all in good fun. There is no way the dog, who is only a few months old, will be able to be handled by her.

Another family on our street has two dogs, but neither of them can walk or breathe normally without stumbling. Both of the "hard" guys—father and son, I think—are exerting real effort and are literally being dragged by these dogs.

It is ridiculous. Moreover, I dread them.

They appear to believe that by frightening off onlookers, these dogs will offer them protection. The number of fatalities these dogs have produced and the fact that the same moron keeps purchasing them. I don't understand the hype because they aren't inexpensive either.

The owners love to have them off lead and then claim that "they are harmless," so i'm not being ridiculous.

Please tell me it’s not just be sick to death of this?

YANBU at all. In fact I’d ban a few other breeds too, and probably mandate owner training courses! I have had three encounters in the past year where dogs (one French bulldog, not sure of other breeds) off lead have gone for my three year old. In every single case the owner has insisted “they’re just excited”! No, growling and lunging for a small child is aggressive, ffs. Absolutely hate these people and the rest of the public shouldn’t have to walk round on tenterhooks, it’s actually making me nervous around any approaching off the lead dog now.

"It's the owners, not the breed!" is the NAMALT of the dog world 🙄

I was raised around violence and statistics say I am more likely to be violent but Im not a violent person. so statistics mean nothing.

This makes no sense and strongly suggests that you don't understand the basic idea of statistics.

I would never, in a million years, have pointed this out if not for you spamming the thread with claims that we are 'all idiot' and 'stupid'. Maybe take a look at yourself, eh?

Absolutely agree. The XL Bully apologist is just fulfilling a stereotype that most owners of this type of dog are of a certain type.

Also, the ''It's not the dog, it's the owner'' is ridiculous.

The breed of dog most abused in the world is the Greyhound.
The suffering they endure is horrendous.

If being abused turned a dog aggressive, Greyhounds would be raging.

Except they are not.

I have met one or two Greys who have bitten, but they don't kill and crush bone or do severe damage to people like Pit bulls and their crosses can do.

These Pit bull crosses have been apparently 'fine' with families- and then just snap and go into a red rage for no apparent reason.

One woman owner whose XL killed her father said the dog was ''Playing''.

How ridiculous can you get.

These Pitbulls had a ''Lovely'' home for EIGHT years.

I'm not sure banning is the answer as the crisis issue make it difficult. However a muzzle needs to be mandatory when outside the home at all times.

However that won't help the tragic cases in the home

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 14/09/2023 20:30

Cross issue nor crisis

Pawpawpatrol · 14/09/2023 20:49

We have a family member with one of these dogs. She's a complete idiot.

The dog to my knowledge has shown no sign as such of being particularly aggressive but is enormous, excitable and completely untrained and out of control. And at the end of the day he is a dog, so he has predatory and aggressive instincts in there. With no way to control him it's like driving a car without breaks. Or a gun that you leave lying around with no safety.

We had to stop seeing the relative a few years ago because she would not compromise on being without the dog and showed no ability to understand he posed a danger. Eg, the last time we met the dog jumped up exuberantly whilst I was holding my ~1 year old, would not stop when asked, she did nothing and just mad irrational anthropomorphising remarks like "don't worry, he loves him, he wants to protect him!". The dog was just too dangerous for us to have any further contact. She wouldn't be a responsible owner of any dog, let alone a potential killing machine.

Pawpawpatrol · 14/09/2023 20:55

Obviously some owners are more irresponsible and dangerous with these dogs than others (my relative, case in point). But it's also ridiculous to say it has nothing to do with breed.

There's a reason professionals who herd sheep only use highly bred shepherd breeds. They don't pay £10s of thousands for the right pedigree because it makes no difference. I don't think anyone disputes that a border collie takes to herding better than a pomeranian.

In the same way, XL bullies take easier to killing than dogs which haven't been bred with characteristics that maximise their ability to kill over generations. It doesn't make them "bad" - they're animals. It just makes them dangerous. Like how a bear is dangerous.

Beautifully put.

I too have noticed the feckless glee XL Bully and Pitbull owners have when their dog is leaping up at people, or menacing other people's dogs.

It's like a ''You can't tell me wot to do'' attitude, and they love it when parks clear when they go in.

Muzzling would be a good idea when a dog capable of causing damage is taken out in public- but would the owners have the common sense to know how to fit a suitable muzzle comfortably and securely so the dog couldn't rake it off?

Often the people who have these brutes look singularly weedy and incapable of holding them securely.
One bloke locally has a ludicrous chain leash with massive links, but the weak link is HIM- If that dog lunged, he'd be flat on his face and the XL loose as we have so often seen.

boora · 17/09/2023 16:23

It's not the dogs fault but the owners, I have a 3 yr old xl bully since he was 8 wks old, I trust him 100% with my kids, yes his big n strong n some cases they may need extra training, also having a garden helps an secure ur fence n any gaps in fence, it's funny that we have pedophiles who abuse kids why don't we do the same to them, if 1 male is a pedophile then they all are pedophiles. We all can be dangerous an how we all behave if we are.under threat or get ambushed or attacked we react too. Just animals especially dogs get the worst end of it, sort out child sex trafficking that is the biggest thing going n still no one does anything, but u wanna shoot dogs

GrazingSheep · 17/09/2023 16:33

but u wanna shoot dogs

I don’t think they will be shot (exept those who are actually in the act of mauling someone). I imagine they will be euthanised by vets.

Mk169 · 18/09/2023 18:38

What sort of lady has a dog like that!! No need, just get a Labrador ffs!!

Mk169 · 18/09/2023 18:41

Are you ok writing! struggled to understand your point

Mk169 · 18/09/2023 18:56

So a 10 year old puts out threat or aggression in a park and gets mauled to death not appropriate int these modern times mate !!

Thefreakyfairy · 19/09/2023 17:01

And yet the 2 dogs most likely to bite and injure children are Jack Russells and chihuahuas! Where's the call for these to be better controlled or banned!

It's not the breed it is always the owner! Instead of persecuting ALL dogs how about better human controls being put in place! Licencing required for breeding and owning if ALL breeds! Registering all dogs, microchipping without fail and same punishments for any dog of any breed that has knowingly attacked a human or another dog!
I own a Staffie, a breed which has had its fair share of bad news stories, who is now petrified of pugs after being attacked 3 times by 3 different pugs (off lead when she is on lead) but if a future event happened where my girl retaliated then it would be my dog who is put to sleep as the aggressor!
Sort out the humans owning ALL dogs that show aggression before labelling all dogs of a certain breed with the same brush!

HappyRhino · 19/09/2023 18:23

@Thefreakyfairy The difference is, if a chihuahua or a Jack Russell bites, most people could overpower them and they are very, very unlikely to kill or cause serious injury

If an XL Bully bites, very few people could overpower one and the number of cases in the news show that when they do bite, they almost always cause serious injury or death.

It is ludicrous that Bull breed apologists always bring up chihuahuas.

I have never met a chihuahua capable of tearing the throat out of a grown man, or slaughtering a child, or woman.

Chihuahuas can be barky, I have been bitten by a Jack Russell as a child at a stable yard , but the bite needed nothing more than an Elastoplast...I remember it ached a bit.

This innocent little girl in the picture, Mia De Rouen was slaughtered by the dog she is seen with.

It IS the breed. XL's are pitbull crosses, and are highly inbred, and prone to suddenly 'losing it' -with their own owners, not to mention strangers.

Elderly women have been targeted, who pose no threat at all to these unstable dogs.

@Thefreakyfairy so in your mind, bad dog owners just gravitate towards XL Bullys and if those same people had instead decided to get labradoodles, we'd be reading about mauling and killing attacks from labradoodles right now instead of XL bullys. Do I have that right?

Very good point.
There are reams of poor owners out there, who buy unsuitable dogs for their lifestyles
Eg Border Collies
Vizlas
Working Cocker
Short Haired Pointer
Labrador
Labradoodle
Lurcher
Standard poodle
Border Terrier

These dogs in the wrong home can be unhappy but tend not to kill or savage people or innocent well behaved dogs who are just minding their own business on walks.

The dogs I am wary of are mainly Pit crosses XL Bullies because they have a very short fuse and can turn in an instant.

There used to be a red nosed pitbull locally
About the same age as my dog

Her owner said she was a Pit.
I wasn’t afraid of her for myself- but was afraid of her in case she turned on another dog- She seemed ok- but have seen two in the past that seemed ok and suddenly went for a Lurchers neck despite the owner saying they were ok

The wide leather collar of the Lurcher saved it.

Personally i find 90% of dog owners to be a nuisance. I have a bridleway running through my garden. Almost all dogs off leads, spaniels jumping over the fence, dog pooh everywhere and the stench of urine against my house/back door is unbelievable in summer. And this is in the countryside. Too many "he's only being friendly" owners, including the one who thought it was fine for his labrador to barge into the house after my cat. I vote to make leads AND muzzles compulsory on ALL dogs, and walking without a dog pooh bag/carrier a finable offence

CoralBells · 23/09/2023 23:45

That's horrendous that they are letting their dogs wee on your house and door, as well as the rest.

Agree that 90 % of dog owners are inconsiderate arseholes.

A friend has a bridleway at the side of his garden
he has put a fence up with native hedgeing.

Might that be an option?

A sign saying “ Toxic weed killer keep off” might help?

People with make dogs let them piss up everything - gateways, even up a child’s leg the other day.

Sensible, well trained dogs are a rarity these days.

I'm a dog owner, and I'd have to disagree and say it's more like 10% of dog owners are inconsiderate arseholes. Probably less.

Most dogs are well behaved and/or harmless. Most dog owners are considerate.

The problem you have is that even if it's just 5% that are inconsiderate arseholes, if you have 200 dogs going past your house a day that's still potentially 10 shits or other issues you need to suffer with. Not much you can do about the pissing though - once 1 has marked it they all go there.

I'd happily pay a dog licence which could be like the fishing licence. But instead of the money going towards restocking our shit-filled rivers with trout, it can be spent DNA testing unpicked dog shit and fining the owners.

Except when it's Pitbulls and Pit mixes like XL Bullies- the overwhelming evidence of them being unstable, inherently aggressive {cannibalising their own puppies, the puppies cannibalising each other, a Pit puppy eating five fingers off a human baby -{USA} doing serious damage to humans and pet dogs {they are bred to fight} it's Pits and their crosses that are implicated in so many serious maulings and deaths and injuries compared to any other type of dog.

This table comes from USA.

Labradors {a big, heavy breed} are listed here, too, but it's Pit mixes that are the most prevalent, so it IS breed having a tendency towards latent aggression.
