Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

You really can't understand the difference or are you just pretending to be obtuse to be seen to have the correct opinion?

The OP complained that there had been no consultation and there was no infrastructure support.

I addressed the infrastructure support point that she made.

If she was actually complaining about some other aspect of the plan, she should have stated that explicitly so that other posters could respond to that.

When ex-military bases were first touted as a solution I assumed they would be secure. There would be existing fences and security features. Of course they should be detained and not allowed to wander the local area. We have no idea of their criminal status and they are here illegally. They should be treated as prisoners - they should be in prison if successive governments had built any. If you can't see the dangers in housing 1000+ immigrant men from cultures that clearly don't view women as equal human beings you are so hopelessly naive I lose all hope for you.

I think locking up people who haven't committed any crime would be an appalling thing for a government to do.

They are not here illegally. It is not illegal to enter the UK for the purpose of claiming asylum.

How do you know they have not committed a crime?
We don't know who they are. They throw away documentation

ApricotCrush · 21/08/2026 13:38

To the 32% who think that this is reasonable. What is wrong with you? Can you not see what is happening to this country? Why should patriotic law-abiding working people be taxed to the hilt only to see their hard earned money spent on economic migrants who only come here for what they get from the Government and have no respect for our law, culture, religion, women or children. All the amenities in this country are falling apart, we are £3 trillion in debt, and yet we can throw money at men who will not contribute anything to our economy.

And to those who are asking where these men should be housed, they should not be housed anywhere, they should be sent straight back to where they came from, i.e. France, to whom we are paying millions to do absolutely nothing. Or better still they should be turned around before they even land here.

LakieLady · 21/08/2026 13:38

Hoardasurass · 21/08/2026 12:22

They should not be allowed to claim asylum.
They are economic migrants who have travelled through multiple safe countries to get here.
Every single one of these men should be taken off the boats and flown straight back to their home countries, no housing, no benefits and no asylum claims end of.

No-one can say with any certainty whether someone has a right to asylum or not until their asylum application has been determined.

charliehungerford · 21/08/2026 13:40

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/08/2026 13:24

Because, astonishingly enough, if you just turn up to any old country with a plane full of asylum seekers who say they do not come from there, that country will tell you to fuck right off. You wouldn't be permitted to de-plane or possibly even land the plane.

They mainly arrive from France. If we can find a way to work with the French authorities to return them there, by intercepting in the channel and towing back, rather than rescuing mid channel and bringing them here, eventually the draw of the channel crossings will end, and places along the French coast that are overrun with these young men will return to normal. Families should be able to apply for asylum at any British embassy, and the government need to invest in capable staff to process quickly.

Our army barracks was used for Ugandan refugees in 1970s. A fantastic piece of our town’s history. I understand the nervousness but nimby ism isn’t helpful. There’s a need and an identified solution. Would you support it if you didn’t live there?

Ugandan refugees were often families who'd done well enough to raise the jealous hackles of Idi Amin. They were people who'd run businesses and practised in the professions. They weren't (mainly) low-skilled single males.

The men are allowed to leave, but how do you safeguard? as there’s no way to check or vet

ginasevern · 21/08/2026 13:44

@MildlyMoist "Your assertions show your immense privilege at living in a country which is stable and has democratic governance."

It's not a privilege, its a hard won right. The UK wasn't fashioned by god to be a democracy with stable governance nor was it sheer luck or happenchance. Men and women over many centuries shed blood, were deported and lost their lives to shape our lives and freedoms.

I sympathise a lot with Piddington :⁷ I want and migrants to be humanely housed, especially the female and child minority, but there must be a way to do that without frightening and disturbing place like Piddington.

summater · 21/08/2026 13:47

Didn't the locals vote Lib Dem, they generally support this sort of stuff

Honestly, the reading comprehension on this site has taken a nose dive.

The OP raised an issue with the fact there’d been no consultation and no infrastructure support. She also claimed she couldn’t be racist because of her family makeup.

I responded to her points about infrastructure, and racism. At no point did I say she was racist, or that I wasn’t (though I am not).

If the OP meant her post to be about something other than consultation, infrastructure support, or racism, she should have said so. Otherwise how is anyone else supposed to telepathically know what she wants to complain about but is too coy to state explicitly?

WonderfulSmith · 21/08/2026 13:49

charliehungerford · 21/08/2026 13:25

My point was if they were genuine asylum seekers they would be open about where they are from, why do they lie? I read about a case where a man stated he was from a particular region of a country in Africa, an
interpreter was found who spoke the language from that area, he didn’t understand them, he was from
somewhere else. Why lie? Probably because he wasn’t a genuine asylum seeker, just another economic refugee.

Yes. A number of these people are not genuine. So where do you send them and how?

What if a plane turned up at Heathrow tomorrow with a load of Australians/Americans/ Canadians on board and they said ‘we think these people are yours, we don’t know but have them anyway’, would we take them in? No.

And you would tear them down. International law applies to us too.

As an historian, I would remind you and others of Germany in the 1930s and how circumstances can change very quickly in any country.

Ohfloradora · 21/08/2026 12:37

I’ve heard the description that the place is self contained but those staying there will be free to come and go as they like. I think they should be properly contained - if all facilities are on site, why the need to allow people that are not identified wander about. If I landed at a foreign airport or whatever without documentation I wouldn’t be let through. Surely proper containment pending the assessment of each case would be better, along with speeding up the application process.

I'm increasingly alarmed by number of people who appear very willing to lock up people who haven't broken any laws.

Makes me wonder what other fundamental human rights they'd like to abandon.

Can you see any issues with barracks with over 1000 men seeking asylum nearby to you?

Bollihobs · 21/08/2026 13:54

MildlyMoist · 21/08/2026 11:35

Surely the village managed fine when the barracks was in use by the military? What’s the difference? RAF bases have their own infrastructure. Your sewage system, roads etc will be no more affected than they were then.

PS it’s perfectly possible to be racist even if you have family from an ethnic minority background.

Gobsmacked that you can genuinely (if you really do) think the two scenarios are the same. The phrase suicidal empathy seems apt.

Infrastructure goes well beyond sewage and water connections. There no transport, social or economic infrastructure to support these asylum seekers. There’s quite literally one bus out, and one bus in, per day in Piddington.

An MOD base has all of these things funded and/or supported by the MOD, plus the soldiers and civilians onsite have full time roles to keep them busy onsite & salaries to support their lifestyles. There’s not exactly an acute requirement for Deliveroo riders in a village with no shop.

ChippySeagulls · 21/08/2026 13:56

I would much prefer the 3-4 hundred (at least) now housed around my small town in private rentals and HMOs to be housed outside the town in a camp/ex-barracks instead if one was available. As well as men causing problems locally the reduction in property available for rent to local families is also an issue. I'm assuming Piddington isn't a village with many rental properties so would be unaffected if rentals were looked for instead, the problem would just be moved to another area.

In one camp would be better, and preferably kept onsite too or at least subject to strict conditions and a curfew. Unknown men who have entered the country illegally shouldn't be roaming around while applications processed.

As for the pamphlet - FFS! 🙄 I bet whoever wrote that doesn't have to worry about his wife, daughter or mum walking through their local park in broad daylight.

So why are the police so coy when it comes to releasing ethnic minority stats for those who commit these crimes? I think we all know.

My Grandad was in the Lancaster regiment. He fought in Germany, Egypt…collection of photos which he dated years and location. He was lied to. He fought for nothing.

LakieLady · 21/08/2026 13:58

Lugol · 21/08/2026 12:34

Why are you assuming racism? That's very reductive.

Maybe it's the fact that these undocumented men are from a culture that sees rape of women as a justifiable punishment? Or is it now racist to object to rape culture? 🙄

Call people all the names you want, it very quickly starts to mean nothing.

If they're undocumented, how does anyone know what culture they're from?
