Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

Somewhere secure where they cannot access women and children to rape.
Oh... and elderly gentleman- any hole is a goal apparently now.

And what kind of secure place? An old army barracks perhaps?

MildlyMoist · 21/08/2026 12:36

Lugol · 21/08/2026 12:34

Why are you assuming racism? That's very reductive.

Maybe it's the fact that these undocumented men are from a culture that sees rape of women as a justifiable punishment? Or is it now racist to object to rape culture? 🙄

Call people all the names you want, it very quickly starts to mean nothing.

If you read the thread the OP says she can’t be racist because of her family, so I was responding to her own point, not accusing her of being racist.

Would you be ok with the same barracks nearby to you?

Well we had to put up with them in our local hotel and them walking to the schools to sexually harass the girls. As well as making parks unusable. Many of the cities chosen can't cater for them. Then they are expected to be housed in that city, which doesn't have housing as it is. Ex army barracks are ideal. We don't know who they are. In the cultures they come from, child marriage is ok and women/girls out on their own are fair game, so keep them contained. The giving out of leaflets might not solve the issues. However, house the women and children in safe accommodation. There's sexual assaults and rapes being hushed up.

Well hotels are out the of question now so where can they put them? A military base sounds like a good solution. I can see why you’re not happy though , I wouldn’t be thrilled either , but nowhere is currently suitable according to the people who live , well, everywhere really.

An island somewhere until they are processed/returned home would be the best solution. An uninhabited island.

Ohfloradora · 21/08/2026 12:37

I’ve heard the description that the place is self contained but those staying there will be free to come and go as they like. I think they should be properly contained - if all facilities are on site, why the need to allow people that are not identified wander about. If I landed at a foreign airport or whatever without documentation I wouldn’t be let through. Surely proper containment pending the assessment of each case would be better, along with speeding up the application process.

Our army barracks was used for Ugandan refugees in 1970s. A fantastic piece of our town’s history. I understand the nervousness but nimby ism isn’t helpful. There’s a need and an identified solution. Would you support it if you didn’t live there?

The Ugandan Asians were mostly families, escaping specific and proved brutality from Idi Amin.
They settled, worked unbelievably hard, and were rightly welcomed.

The right to seek asylum is internationally recognised as a basic human right.

Your assertions show your immense privilege at living in a country which is stable and has democratic governance.

If you lived in other circumstances you would not be so quick to strip people of basic rights.

They are claiming asylum from where exactly? France?

Maybe you should actually go to Sangatte and see what goes on there. These men are certainly not running for their lives 😂

And if they are so scared they've run through several countries to get to the UK then maybe ask them where their women and children are?

Oh they left them behind so they could do what exactly?

Economic migrants.

It’s not closed. They can leave the barracks.

Piddington isn't secure... they will be allowed to wander freely through the viilage of only 400 residents.

I'm sure if they were kept securely locked away there wouldnt be an issue.

WonderfulSmith · 21/08/2026 12:33

So where do you want them to go while it’s worked out what country they are from and a plane found for them? It’s not as simple as picking them up off a small boat, saying ‘where are you from?’ and then putting them straight onto a plane.

Jail or secure internment camps

Caramalised · 21/08/2026 12:39

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 11:50

@dreamingofgoodhair I know all about it

I don’t live there

I understand how terrifying this is. Used to live near one of the hotels and that was bad enough. Are you there? I’m so sorry.

you might get lucky as we’ve had a couple of sensible threads about this this week, but generally you’ll just be gaslit and hear all sorts of nonsense.

oh, and I’m also not white and it’s no insulation against being called a racist believe me. Some people are obsessed with colour. And that’s not you and I!

Edited

The village life will be changed completely. I imagine very few people will feel safe and free to do what they want now.

bananaobama · 21/08/2026 12:39

It’s been totally fine in Crowborough. Save for the local racists protesting every weekend and blocking the roads

WonderfulSmith · 21/08/2026 12:36

Do you think they are incarcerated? It’s not secure. They are free to leave

Theresawaytobehonestandkind · 21/08/2026 12:39

Let’s get used to attacks like that. You think you are safe out not even past midnight accompanied by a man? Clearly not, they will put a knife to his throat and rape you. All the middle class lefties of Piddington would be happy for them to be placed in working class areas, so they need to receive what they’ve welcomed. Nothing to do with race - it’s cultural. And yes, I’m not uneducated enough to know my government possibly played a part in destabilising Afghanistan, but that was our government, not us, I don’t wish to pay the price for their actions who live far removed from the consequences. I’m sure Tony is safe somewhere. I hope he is anyway.

The barracks are no more secure than HMOs'.
They can come and go as they like.

Jail or secure internment camps

Jail? The prisons are full of all our home grown rapists and murders.

I agree that they should be somewhere secure but I don’t know where people think those places are going to be magicked up from.

@Hoardasurass "The worst thing labour did was repealed the law that the tories brought in that removed their right to claim asylum"

which law do you mean, please?

So where do you want them to go while it’s worked out what country they are from and a plane found for them? It’s not as simple as picking them up off a small boat, saying ‘where are you from?’ and then putting them straight onto a plane.

But why should we have to work out where they came from? Why do they hide where they are from? Why do many of them ‘dispose’ of documents? Why do many of them
lie about how old they are and where they are from? If they have a genuine claim of asylum why go to these lengths.

OvernightBloats · 21/08/2026 12:44

The hedges surrounding our local park all had to be drastically cut and trimmed because of what happened there. A woman had been dragged into a hedge and raped by an asylum seeker.

Every time I walk past this park, I lament the loss of the once beautiful abundant shrubs and think of the poor woman who suffered this horrendous crime.

Fact is that housing a large amount of asylum seekers in an area changes the place.

AmberHollow · 21/08/2026 12:44

Can I ask a genuine question? I don’t understand why these centres are “open door”. Surely the happy medium is to use the bases, as yes they need to go somewhere, but remove the option to leave the site freely until identity is established and claim is processed.

Is there a reason this is not the case? I’d feel very differently about a secure processing site nearby, than an open door base. Presumably this would also weed out people who are coming here for less than valid reasons, knowing they can’t just disappear.

I can’t imagine a scenario where I entered another country illegally and wasn’t then detained until they figured out who I am and whether I have a valid reason to be there.

Ohfloradora · 21/08/2026 12:44

Does anyone know if there is any reason why undocumented arrivals cannot be held securely whilst they are being assessed? Other than perhaps not having existing secure establishments (not prisons we’ve got enough to deal with there without adding more).

StillgotmyiPod · 21/08/2026 12:44

There was some research that came out a few years ago that showed rates of sexual offending in Afghan males in the UK was something like 15 times higher than that of British nationals.

Meanwhile Afghani women and girls are stuck back there being raped, abused, killed…

Somewhere along the line, we’ve ended up with things the wrong way round.

titchy · 21/08/2026 12:45

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/08/2026 11:38

They have been given pamphlets asking them not to rape any locals, so it will be fine.

Given the number of sexual assaults in Army barracks it would probably be useful for the MoD to give out pamphlets as well….
