Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

A quote from elsewhere in this thread

The risk to that teenage girl barely changes ... Are you trying to say that there is hardly any difference to her safety between having 1200 bored men in a camp at the end of her garden and not having them there?

I don't recall anyone coming back to answer my question, let alone to definitively say 'No, there will be no extra risk'.

So again -
Are you trying to say that there is hardly any difference to her safety between having 1200 bored men in a camp at the end of her garden and not having them there?

Well I wasn't, so it isn't.
Hopefully you agree that calling for hostels full of asylum seekers to be burned to the ground is wrong....or has the Overton window moved so far for you that this is acceptable public discourse?
'Native inhabitants'- sounds a bit Restore for me. We are all descended from people who originated from Africa at one time or another....

Native inhabitants - who said I only meant white people? I used the term to mean everyone who lives here legally.

For the avoidance of doubt, calling for hotels full of asylum seekers to be burned to the ground is wrong. I had already said it was wrong in the post you are replying to.

And also for the avoidance of doubt, everyone else on the thread can spot the leftie male accusing me of wanting to burn people just because I am saying I don't want towns and villages full of unvetted foreign men from medieval cultures.

I'd like to call out the phrase 'Fighting aged Males.'
It's a clever phrase, aimed at demonising men who claim asylum. My neigbour, pleasant chap, good Dad, from Ukraine is a 'fighting aged male'...as in he's a man betwen 18 and 60. It feeds into the suspicious, simplistic minds of those who few people who look different and have different life stories as something to inherently afraid of.
It's sad that what once was unacceptable has become acceptable- two examples from this week alone:

  1. The tragic drowinings of the British/Palestinian family- comments like well 'that's three less to feed' and 'shouldn't have been here anyway and
  2. A brilliant Ukrainian boy who got all 9s in his GCSEs and instead of celebrating his success there were lots of comments about now he's a 'Fighting aged Male' he should be going home to fight.

In my wife's family- and I'm a white British man married to an economic migrant from one of the most demonised in the Daily Mail African countries- there are a range of asylum seekers/economic migrants (and sometimes a mix of both). These are the jobs done by those people, or their children:

  1. neurosurgeon
  2. very senior civil servant (daily face time with sec of state, sometimes PM)
  3. NHS Band 8 clinical/managerial role
  4. senior exec with recognisable firm
  5. already a manager in Civil Service in late 20s
  6. Lawyer
  7. Doctor

All are bi/trilingual. At some point in their lives, some of them were on gov handouts when they first arrived here.

  1. And yes, some left good jobs back home (judge, accountant) etc and now do more menial tasks as not all qualifications are acceptable and they needed a place of safety, but this is also contributing.

I laugh in the face of those despicable, thick racists protesting outside hostels, who probably don't have a GCSE between them, when I look at how well my wife's extended family have done, and how much they contribute. Unfortunately, there far too many people on this thread, who've probably never ever spoken to an asylum seeker, jumping on the demonisation bandwagon.

Thanks for coming along to mansplain what we think, mate. Your points are disingenuous at best: breathtakingly assumptive/libellous at worst.

Just a few points;

Those people gloating about people drowning are m*rons.
The teenage boy did well.
Many Ukrainians came in as families, fleeing from war.

It is nothing to do with what people look like. Don’t pretend.

It is nothing to do with different life stories… unless that life story happens to include ‘treating women badly as it’s my culture’, or crime. That is one key point – we don’t know.

No one means there aren’t some genuine asylum seekers. I’d be happy to see most of the women in Afghanistan over here as them, for instance.
However strangely it just seems to be Afghan men appearing: what are they fleeing from, the oppression of women?
And why do they all flood here instead of one of the many countries en route?

No one is against legal immigration. (Some) people from other places are welcome… IF they integrate and respect British values.

You say we shouldn’t prejudge asylum seekers, yet you are prejudging those protesting outside hotels.

You reply to our point about not wanting all fighting age men from medieval cultures here by telling us you know a man from a European culture and an African woman here.

The coverage of ‘small boats’/mega dinghys shows only men. The news reports on any who have died on the crossing are generally about women though…

And last but not least, from the government website about one of the three planned asylum centres (talking about 1200 males);
6. Who would reside at this site?
If deemed suitable, the site would accommodate single adult males between the ages of 18 and 65 who have applied for asylum. … The majority of illegal migrants claiming asylum in the UK are single adult males.

Lots to unpick in your rather angry post.

  1. Having a point of view isn't 'mansplaining', and calling my post that sounds like whataboutery. Nothing in my post is libellous.

  2. It's been explained so many times both why men are often on the boats alone, and why asylum seekers often travel through different countries before claiming in the UK that it's disingenuous to raise this as a point- just like people who pretend not to realise why painting an England flag on a roundabout or flying a tatty English flag from a lampost isn't a threatening gesture to some.

In brief though, if you insist on not understanding why it's mostly men on the boats, it's because familes often pool their resources so that one individual makes the journey- the individual who has the best chance of surviving the journey, which is usually the man. The idea being that the family can join them later. The parents of the neurosurgeon in my wife's family did it in a similar way. Yes Labour have changed/are changing the rules on family reunion, so this might chage the outcome when the news filters through.

The UK invaded and ruled many countries around the world. As a result many asylum seekers have family connections to the UK, or speak English, and want to come here. Just as say, a Chadian asylum seeker or an Algerian seeker might travel to France. Britain has less asylum seekers per capita and in total than many other countries. Countries like Ethiopia can be both a destination for, and a producer of asylum seekers. Asylum seekers are legally allowed to travel through other countries en route to the UK.

A majority of those arriving in the UK are granted asylum. This is a hard and arduous process. In my previous job of working for an MP I've read many asylum seeker interviews and can attest to how hard they are- have you?

Yes, you are right, I do think people who stand outside asylum hostels- many of whom is it proven have criminal records for abuse of women and children- are worse than the asylum seekers inside. I am especially disgusted by those who try to burn their fellow human beings alive because they are asylum seekers. As I hope you are?

I wish you could meet some of the successful asylum seekers I know and just talk to them, hear their stories and see what amazing jobs they now do in the UK....it might just give you a different perspective.

You are a man though, at least you claim to be.

If you don’t understand how inconsiderate it is to enjoying your male privilege while calling women, who have concerns about male violence, thick racists then you clearly are not reading the room.

No, not at all. It's calling out racism. Nothing to do with gender.

You have pulled out every cliche about asylum seekers including “neurosurgeon”. Do you honestly think all these hotels/camps are stuffed with flippin’ neurosurgeons ? You’ve “read asylum claims” -ffs. No one is going to write, “I am a criminal fleeing justice in my own country. I thought I’d come to Britain for a house, benefits and for easy women.”

And then you mention “tatty flags”, “racism” - yeah yeah. We should all SHUT UP and if women are raped and assaulted then too bloody bad in your elevated view.

25% of asylum seekers are women and children. I posted a link earlier.

The Uk has fewer asylum applicants and than many other countries en route from Asia and Africa. And almost all of the European ones provide more financial and practical resources than the UK. People are not really coming here for benefits. However opportunities to work illegally are more frequent here, and that could well be a draw.

Government action on this has improved but could be stronger. And as consumers we can do our best to not participate. Don’t use food delivery places or takeaways or nail bars etc unless you know and trust them.

With the numbers coming in, that 75% is a huge amount of men though.

Lots of other countries also seem to be having problems with asylum seekers. What we provide them is incredibly generous.

I agree we have to vote with our feet where we can.

Rhetorical?

It’s been totally fine in Crowborough. Save for the local racists protesting every weekend and blocking the roads

With all due respect Crowborough is a much bigger town with a much smaller site. The villages 'chosen' are looking at more asylum seekers than residents. I also live in one of these villages. The Home Office themselves say that cannot house women on the sites for safeguarding reasons. However the same safeguarding doesn't apply to the citizens paying for it that live outside the gate. There is no democratic process or local voice or planning. The government have changed the laws so they apply to themselves for planning, and local residents aren't allowed to see it. Our base isn't some remote site but right at the heart of our village of 600. For those saying that there were forces based there; there is really strong rules, purpose and discipline in the forces. Anyone thinking that 1500 men of 5 different cultures, with no family structures, and nothing to do are going to be sitting around singing kumbaya is niave.

also the Home Office plan in our village will see women outnumber 6 to 1: The village is literally a road and there is nowhere to go. I can't see how anyone, whatever your views on immigration policies can argue for this being a reasonable plan
