Can I draw your attention to this please ?
A village of 400 people in Oxfordshire, the government want to house 1200 migrants in an old RAF barracks nearby. No consultation and no infrastructure to support.
Before anyone accuses me of being racist, my family make up negates that.

This should create plenty jobs for the local area.

Plenty for local NHS, GP, prescribing, dentists, AIDS, TB, hepatitis, diphtheria, scabies, malaria, polio, STDs, mental health - whahoo

@Switchnow i'm not someone who goes to protest no

I lived near one in 2016, it closed at some point during lockdown, got replaced by another down the road. it was awful but there weren't any protests because it was a much smaller issue. That one the new one, was then closed 2023 before the protests kicked off.

I only know two people who have physically protested in real life - possibly three if you count a guy I have only met once. None of them are saying not in my backyard. They are actively saying no across the board.

You might think it's stupid, but some of us feel very strongly about this. Simply shrugging our shoulders and saying "oh well, can't do anything about it "won't get us anywhere.

Denmark and Sweden are making an effort to address this. If enough pressure is put on the government here, then they might do something about it too.

No in England is a form of NIMBY, that’s what I meant. And why is it they think they can speak for every one of us? Pretty sure they don’t share all the same values as everyone in the nation, at a guess.

I don’t think protesting is stupid per se, and didn’t say it was. I think it’s a waste of time unless you’re actually campaigning for a solution. ‘No across the board’ is never going to happen, so if you want to see changes you have to find common ground.

What are you seeing in Denmark or Sweden that you consider positive?

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 20:05

Queenncat · 21/08/2026 20:01

Burnham? Labour? No chance.

Not this government 😂

Sweden and Denmark had to go through quite a lot before anyone took action. To be honest, I don't feel optimistic that anything will happen here. But you can't know that for sure can you - and at least people are trying?

Security guards, police, taxi drivers. Joyful.

I'm not going sit here explaining them to you.

We need KB in power. And SM to cross the floor when that happens.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 20:08

@Queenncat well if KB can actually do it, sure. But SM - sorry but I don't trust someone for whom we actually have a video footage of her welcoming asylum seekers onto the beach (in Lesbos).

Maybe she's seen sense, but that's hard to forgive. I know she says that it's a different time and a different crisis, but I'm afraid it doesn't scream "protect the borders"to me.

Is that old footage? I didn't know that.

I didn’t ask you to explain them, I asked you what you found good about them. But if you don’t want to that’s fine.

You understand that men from ‘different cultures’ aren’t universally dangerous to women right? It’s true that in places like Afghanistan women’s rights have been decimated and some men take advantage of this. But just like here, not all men follow what the law says. In the UK we live in a culture where rape is more or less decriminalised, given conviction rates. Do you imagine therefore that every British man is a danger? Maybe you do. Wise to be cautious but god let’s not live in fear of everyone.

As a woman I think it’s a good idea to be cautious of men, even more so of men who are raised in misogynistic cultures and consider white western women whores and even more so when there are thousands and thousands of them accessing our country without documentation and with absolutely nothing to do.

Single. With constant easy access to porn.

Eh? You know that if porn is easy to access for migrant men it’s even easier for men living here? Who have credit cards and unlimited data etc.

I thought it was self-explanatory. You can see what they’ve done. I think what they’ve done is good.

Whataboutery. Two threats don’t cancel each other out. Just means double the threat for women.

PussyGaylore · 21/08/2026 20:57

I think there is a very strong argument for housing these men who often purport to come from Eritrea or some other country they can’t be sent back to, to be housed in those communities who are the most welcoming of them and have voted in MPs who support open borders. I’m thinking Bristol, Brighton, Islington for starters. Maybe create some camps around the theatre movies who shares these views too?

All they're doing is whataboutery (and glib responses and obtuseness).

I guess if that’s how you see it.

Why do you think it had nothing to do with Labour fearing loss of votes?

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2026 19:40

I think education works yes.

Does it 100% irradiate crime in society? No.

And how much does a pamphlet do to replicate education from a young age?

And would you trust it enough to have over 1000 men seeking asylum nearby to where you are?

No. That's a terrible idea, and not fair to the majority of residents who disagree with the loudest mouths. They need to be refused entry and sent back or sent off shore like eg. the old Rishi plan that Starmer cancelled even though it had already been paid for.. It's the only option.

Having Shabana Mahmood front some changes yes I think was about votes around immigration and playing both sides. Getting rid of Starmer of course also about popularity but for different reasons.

EmeraldRoulette · 21/08/2026 22:01

This is just one of the convictions that I know of in the last 48 hours, every single day….

I think Starmer just wound people up more with the ‘far right / racist’ accusations. It just drove more to Reform.

Burnham seems to know this and uses a different tack.
